  1. I keep a toothbrush handy. It's perfect for removing hair algae. Just twirl the toothbrush and the hair algae clings to it. Voila!
  2. This worked for me: Remove as much as you can, manually. Use Maracyn as directed. You may have to repeat the Maracyn. Worked great.
  3. That's all I had when I first started. Well, I did have some box filters. I guess we 'thought' we were moving on to bigger and better things. I've gone back to sponge filters and a couple box filters in my small tanks. I still have canister filters on the bigger ones and I HATE them. I keep waiting for them to die. I'll never do those again.
  4. When I was real young I had a "boyfriend" who's family kept fish. I started with guppies in a 10 gallon tank when I was about 13. Those guppies quickly became about 50 in that same tank! I've kept fish most of my life since then, with a small break when I had children and then some medical issues. Now I have 5 tanks and enjoy them all. I love my white clouds! They spawn like guppies, I swear. I have about 3 spawns right now in a 20L with 6 adults. I really enjoy the chase & spawn, lol. Then, I have a 10G with a Betta and a snail, another 20L with ember tetras, pygmy cories, and otocinclus, a 29G quarantine tank for Denison Barbs (they will move to a bigger tank soon and some re-homed) and finally, I have a 40B with paleatus cory, bolivian ram, and a betta. I'm still undecided what I want to put in there. I had some ember tetras in there that I moved with the others in the 20L.
  5. It's been almost a month since I got my Denison Barbs at Petco. They were pretty skinny and several were itchy and flashing. I've been changing water weekly since their meds. They are little piggies and will eat anything. They get live BBS, frozen spirulina brine shrimp, Xtreme pellets, Krill flake, Rapashy and Xtreme algae wafers. Here's a photo of when I got them on April 7th and a photo of them today. I think they've come a long way (even the one with the bent spine) and I'm ready to re-home half of them. What a fun fish!
  6. I got this from Aquarium Coop and planted it in a pot with the dirt it came in and a root tab. I put that in the easy planter on March 7th. It sprouted within 3 days and this is it today. When I saw the root growth I thought it was interesting and decided not to plant it. It's already sent 3 lily pads to the surface.
  7. I use a pepper grinder to get some foods smaller for fry or nano fish. Works wonders.
  8. I've always been amazed that some fish are so into parental care while others eat their own fry or simply abandon them. Fascinating.
  9. My ember tetras have been busy. I found surprise fry, how fun! My WCM's have been busy as well, tons of fry in that tank. I'll have lots to put outside this year. I love this unintentional breeding.
  10. Thanks to everyone for taking the time to respond. I feel better now. My 40B is the largest aqueon I have bought from Petco. I think I'll give it a go. I really can't use the cube tank (though I think they're gorgeous) because I'm setting it up for the denison barbs and they need the length.
  11. I'm so paranoid that my fish are starving that I tend to overfeed. My tanks are pretty heavily planted, but I still get nervous they aren't getting enough. I need to relax a bit. I know I overfeed because I have knock down drag outs with various types of algae, lol. I agree with others. Being indoors, our tanks don't get bugs, leaves and various other things dropping in the water. I guess it's like anything else, moderation is important.
  12. This tank has struggled with BBA. You can see it on the crinum calamistratum. I think it's beginning to balance itself. It was cleaning day for this tank and I removed quite a few plants and trimmed what was left. I even trimmed the crinum way back, it was huge. It had a lot of BBA on it. Then I treated it with hydrogen peroxide. The BBA has turned red but the plant is fine. I have two buckets with homeless plants now.
  13. I'm kind of partial to bolivian rams, only because of my skinny little Bliss. 🥰
  14. I'm thinking of buying a 55 or 75 gal tank for my new denison barbs. I've always bought Aqueon tanks at Petco but am concerned of quality in larger tanks. Do you have a favorite brand? I'd love to hear your experiences. I'm thinking glass but will consider acrylic. Thanks in advance.
  15. These two are BFF. They eat together, follow each other and just hang out. I love watching them. I had a group of paleatus cories and over time lost them all but this big girl. She lays eggs on the glass, often. I think she might be confused about who her friend is.
  16. The gender doesn't really matter, just thought I'd see of you all agree that this is a male. Thanks!
  17. I'll move them to the 40B when they've been medicated and out of quarantine. I'll HAVE to get a bigger aquarium or re-home them at some point. They're the only ones in the quarantine tank. The 40B has ember tetras (good size for an ember) and a bolivian ram.
  18. So sorry I'm so late to answering. I've not been active on here for awhile due to life, lol. I use root tabs probably about once a month. You know, I can't even remember. I know it wasn't pearl weed but it's not there any longer.
  19. So, I stopped by Petco today to pick up some frozen fish food. I was browsing the fish tanks and saw 10 Roseline Sharks in a little 10 gal. WITH some platy's. I asked how much they were, the gal said she'd ask the "Animal Manager" as she didn't see a sticker for them (there wasn't one I could find either). The manager came over and said they were red tail sharks and were $5.99. I told her I'll take all 10 of them. They're really thin and one has a crooked spine. I didn't want to leave him alone so I took him too. They're all about 1-1/2 to 2 inches. They're in a 29 gal. quarantine tank for now. The problem is...the biggest tank I have is a 40 gal breeder. I'll fatten them up and decide what to do with them. I'm feeling a little guilty that I was sold these at a cheaper fish price. My conscience may force me to go back and give them a little more money, lol, we'll see.
  20. I vote for white clouds. They are so underrated. I have the gold variety but I love them all.
  21. No clue, but I also got that one from Aquarium Coop. I give it their root tabs as well.
  22. The one directly behind it is an amazon sword that I cut in half. It was huge.
