So my tap water PH is 7.8 and the KH is around 80 ppm. I just did a water change yesterday as well.

GH is high. It’s reading at 150 which it has been since I first got the tank. My API test kit doesn’t test the KH but I just used the strips because it does and it’s at 0 so definitely low. Here is the picture of the test strip. Any thoughts?

Yes we have hard water. I had heard that it shouldn’t matter but maybe it does. It’s definitely hard.

Sorry, I'm not understanding your question. PH is running 6.6. We have now lost 5 swordtail fry at about 2 months old or less. They are all the same size when they die. Also, have lost 3 Swordtails and Plattys. Best guess is around 3 years old.

Thanks for all the advice everyone. The fish that have died are probably around 3 years old. It’s some of the first fry we raised.

Great thank you! I have a canister filter so I’ll try adding crushed coral that way. Does it matter which tray I put it in? As for the snails yes my wife was over feeding. She cut way back on that so hopefully it’ll help. Thanks for the help! I want to start injecting CO2 soon but I read that will lower the PH so I figured I had better get it raised as well. Thanks again! Also, yes I just have platies, guppies, and swordtails. Thanks!

Hi everyone! I have 2 questions. My tank is established (over 2 years) but the PH continues to stay around 6.6 which when researching seems low. I have Platies, Swordtails, and guppies. Should I attempt to raise it or leave it alone? If I need to raise it how best to safely do that? We have recently had a couple fish die with no signs of disease so wasn’t sure if it could be the PH. We’ve had 4 fry also die all about the same age. Second question, is my tank has been overtaken by rams horn snails. Started with one and now I wish I had taken it out. Didn’t realize how quickly they multiply! How can I get rid of these? Far to many to do it by hand. Thanks for the help as always!

Thanks both of you! Getting rid of algae isn’t the only reason. If it helps great bit wanting the overall health of the tank to improve. I’m researching options now and trying to decide. Thanks!

Hello! I’ve been reading the positive affects of using a CO2 Injection system in my 55gallon planted tank. Any recommendations as far as a system to get? Also, is it difficult to operate and keep the proper levels of CO2? I’ve been fighting Staghorn Algae and not getting anywhere. I read that injecting CO2 will eliminate it and also improve the health of the tank. Thank you for your help as this is new to me.

Thanks everyone. I use Purigen instead of carbon in the Fluval. Should I remove the Purigen while putting the excel in?

I started using Excel. I just started using the Easy Green again today. The excess iron makes sense then because it happened after putting in liquid iron because I thought some of the plants needed it. I’ve stopped using it. I have a Fluval 407. Should I remove the Purigan filter while I am adding Excel?

Hi everyone! I need some advice. How can I get rid of staghorn algae? I’ve never had this type of algae and I’ve read several articles but not sure how to best get rid of it. I have a planted tank and want to be careful to not harm the fry I have in the tank. It’s a 55 gallon planted tank. I don’t use CO2. Thank you for any help you can provide!

Thank you for replying. I definitely think it’s the stag horn algae and looks like my water parameters are off now as well. The light is led and on about 8 hours a day right now. Alkalinity is low and the water is showing acidic. Acidic around 6.2 and alkalinity is near 0. Nitrate looks in the safe zone. The algae is growing quickly. The tank is several months old. I did add several plants 2 months ago. I use the liquid fertilizer 1 - 2 times a week. This seems to have happened after using liquid iron 1 time it’s a 55 gallon tank. I change the water once a week
