  1. We don't have the full kit, as we are just starting in the hobby. We rely on the coop strips
  2. We have tested the source water, which is our tap water, and it tests at 0 nitrite. Yes, the test strip is testing at maximum, can't get any pinker. We are very confused
  3. Our tank is having a nitrite spike right now so we are treating with prime and doing water changes. What I am confused by is that after we do a 50% water change, they SAY it should lower your nitrite levels by 50% but we see no change at all. Is there something I am missing here? Levels look exactly the same before and after
  4. We are definitely going to take things slowly. We have some research and planning to do
  5. Well... the bad news is that we had a nitrite spike and we lost the 3 shrimp that had survived shipping. The decision for now is to balance the tank, do water changes and get the parameters right, and then look at alternative tank mates for the CPD. We have not given up on shrimp eventually, but we want to take our time and learn more before we jump into that again.
  6. I swear we do have livestock in there, they are just camera shy 😆
  7. The general consensus seems to be that Tiger is a mutt. They seem to think he needs to be culled.... but if we are not breeding to sell, we just want a shrimp tank for us, is there any harm in mutts? We don't care about only having the brightest ones, we won't be selling them, do mutts hurt in any other way?
  8. We just started out with one, and it is starting to sprout. Pretty cool to watch
  9. We don't mind exactly. His name is now tiger and he is ours lol. Just wish I knew what kind he was
  10. This is the one I just set up. It seems amazing so far
  11. Don't you have a brand new Betta seeking your attention? 😉
  12. That's awesome! We are relatively new to the hobby, and.... economically minded lol. So for now, a $3 app on the phone that lets us track parameters and history is our go to
  13. Does anyone else use an app to track tank parameters? I just set one up, and it looks amazing, and I was just wondering how many others are nerdy enough to do such a thing lol
  14. My sister warned me when I got the betta that it was a gateway fish, and I laughed because we had NO interest in the hobby in general.... but then we got a mystery snail to help clean the tank, and then we needed a bigger tank because they needed more room, and then.... and then.... and now we just set up our third tank with CPDs and trying shrimp for the first time
  15. That is truly gorgeous! We went the other path, the one called "Bettas, the Gateway Fish". We got one because someone at work had one and I thought it was pretty. Now we have three tanks, and constantly planning more, bigger, better!
  16. Update... all 3 of the remaining shrimp made it through the first night and appear to be active and eating. Also, it appears that one of them molted in the feeding dish, which I think is a good sign?
  17. We received our fish order today, with mixed results. We ordered all from the same vendor, which I amnot going to name because I don't know the forum's policy on that. We ordered 5 CPD and 5 tangerine tigers. The seller has a live arrival guarantee. The CPD all arrived healthy and are just fine. Of the 5 shrimp, 2 were DOA, and the others are on a drip acclimation. We contacted the seller about the 2 that were doa, and they offered to replace IF we paid for the overnight shipping costs again. That seems very shady to me. The shrimp were shipped with no mesh in the bag to hold on to. It had a heat pack in it, which might be normal, but seemed a little odd since we are in Texas summer and it was very hot outside. Maybe I am wrong here, but it seems to me that a guarantee means you fix your mess up. You replace your product. Not.... "I will replace but you will have to pay $50 shipping again".
  18. We are indeed lol. I will be honest, we have t two tanks, a betta, and 11 green neon tetras, and fred is by far the star of the show
  19. Welcome! Glad to see another Texan 🙂
  20. Bonus for your biology teaching coworkers, as they can sample your water to view bacteria through microscopes maybe? That is something that my husband and I plan to do in the future is to get a microscope and study the microcosm that lives inside the fish tank, learning about good bacteria, and living microorganisms
  21. Angelfish are angels.... fallen angels 🤣
