  1. Bad time of year for it, but direct sunlight does wonders for killing bacteria. That'll only help if it's a bacterial thing that's making it smell bad however.
  2. Tried taking pictures of my congo tetras. The missus is better at it than me and made a video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6xS-EqsIC24 They've started spawning behavior, but the guppies are too efficient at egg clean-up I think. The little Fluval tank is almost ready for shrimp, and the ramshorns are going gangbusters in there. I started a 2 gallon jar experiment for shrimp, but it's still cycling.
  3. As was mentioned, unless there's sharp pressure points directly against the glass, you can use some really big rock in your tank. I have personally had 10 to 15 pound rocks in my 55s and 75 gallon tanks. I did however, have plenty of sand/gravel as a buffer underneath.
  4. Welcome to the forum! Post pics when you get your new tanks set up too.
  5. Most snails love green beans. I use frozen since they tend to not have salt. the only snails that ignore them seem to be my nerites.
  6. Make sure you remove any molts you see for a while until it all clears up. Good luck!
  7. Welcome to the forum! Former Montanan here, grew up in Hamilton. Nice work on the tanks and the stand.
  8. ahhh, baby shrimps are so awesome, congratulations!
  9. @Jason A. I never realized how pretty my guppies were from the top down, until I did the tub outside. especially in daylight as opposed to aquarium lighting. Looking forward seeing how your Medaka look @Fish Folk Here's the collapsible shade I made for my goldfish late summer with it rolled down rolled up for winter
  10. @Fish Folk I used a homemade trellis with burlap. really helped with the direct sunlight. When the fall started I just took it down and rolled up the burlap to the bracket I made on the wall. I'll add a picture when I get off work.
  11. Thanks for keeping this journal. I know I've said it before, but it sure is a joy to follow! I like to let it build up a while before I check back in. It's like watching a couple episodes in a row of a favorite show.
  12. Welcome to the forum! A little bit of algae isn't too bad. If you haven't tried yet, maybe try cutting back on how long the light is on for, maybe down to 8 or even 6 hours?
  13. Not having had pea puffers before, I'd think it all depends on the individual puffer. In the interests of giving your shrimp the best chances, I'd go for getting the tank well established (months) first. The rock pile is a really good idea, think of it as a shrimp fortress. Once the shrimp have had a chance to have at least one batch, then I'd add the puffer. That way shrimp are going strong and hes the new comer, and not just out to kill anything he see's as encroaching on his pre-established territory.
  14. Welcome to the forum, looking forward to the journal. As a fellow sarcastic procrastinator, I like your style 🙂
  15. I've done 2 substrate swaps. once on a 75 and a 55. Both were done with fish in the tank. Went form gravel to sand and the fish didn't seem to mind. Took hours for the water to clear, I used polyester in the HOB to clean it up... worked pretty good. I've found trying to net the fish out to move them to another tank stresses them more than leaving them in. Except some of my male guppies I can catch half of them by hand and they don't care. The females are much more crafty.
  16. Try some orange peels on the lid. Cats do NOT like citrus, worked for my wife's orchids. Only downside would be if they got knocked in to the tank.
  17. Wow, that's a good amount of space. Lots of room to grow 🙂
  18. Welcome to the forum. Show us pics when you get it all set up!
  19. Cleaned up an old fluval nano tank that had previously had a betta in it for a couple years. Had it tore down in the closet for over a year now. Cycling it with a ramshorn in it for now. He's been happily chugging way for a week so far. Don't want to jinx things, but I may have succeeded in starting this one duckweed free...
