  1. The driftwood had been in my community tank for a year. It was getting heavy with hair algae & I had taken it out. I scrubbed it with hot water. But it's big and I'm not able to put it in my 5 gallon bucket. Any ideas on how I can clean it when it's larger?
  2. I started a pea puffer tank a couple weeks ago. There are currently 4 baby pea puffers & It is a 17 gallon tank. I started it with a sponge filter, 3 crypts and a piece of driftwood from other tanks. It has a sand bottom. The driftwood had a bunch of hair algae. I scrubbed it down+ beforehand. After about a week I’ve noticed the driftwood was getting heavy with algae & the water was getting cloudy. I’ve now removed the driftwood and done a water change (2x). I added a hang on back filter for this size tank (the HOB filter has cycled media). It’s still not clearing up & I’m worried about the fish. The parameters I can measure are all ok. I have 2 other tanks that I’ve had for 18mo plus & never really dealt with cloudiness that didn’t clear in a day or two. Any ideas on what I can do to clear it up?
  3. I saw the fenbendazole solutions as well. I also found a DIY trap that I've set up to see if that works. I have such a problem getting the cherry shrimp to breed. Water parameters are all good, but I've never seen a baby shrimp. I just got this new order of 20 & hoping for some babies!
  4. I tried to get a better pic here. But it looks like it might be plenaria - now I have to go research out to get rid of it. I just got an order of cherry shrimp in - I wonder if they came in that?
  5. I'm trying to identify these worms I found in my shrimp tank. I'm leaning towards detritus worms - they are especially around the leftover food at the bottom. But I don't really see them swimming around & they also match some of the descriptions I've seen about plenaria. Would you be able to tell what these are?
  6. Ok All - I will be patient and do nothing! This is my 6th tank & it's never happened before - so I was very confuzzled. 🙂
  7. Thanks! I do have some filter floss here at work that I'll take home. Then I will just do water changes and be PATIENT! 🤣
  8. I just set up this 46 gallon bow front tank. We got the tank from a friend that had it as a salt water tank. After a week of scrubbing off the deposits all over the glass (lots of elbow grease & razor blades), I got it cleaned up & ready to go. Tuesday I added 2 bags of Eco Complete and 1 bag of gravel (65 lbs). I put a piece of driftwood (that has been in my other tank for months) and some plants & filled it up (carefully so as not to stir the substrate). I also put some of the media from the existing tank in the filter (it's an Oase 300) to get it going. Wednesday it was clear & looking good. Thursday morning it looked like this - totally cloudy. Last night after work, I removed out the used media and added a small bag of purigen. It's still this cloudy this morning. (sorry the picture isn't that great - my light is coming in today) The gh, kh, & ph are all in normal levels (obviously, the nitrites & nitrates aren't showing up yet). What should I do? Why do you think it turned so cloudy after 36 hours?
  9. It's not going to be high tech. I didn't think about the extra outlet if I get two. Thanks! That would be a pain. I am seeing quite a few around $50-$65. Thanks!!
  10. I'm putting together a 46 gallon bow front tank & I need to get lighting. It will be a planted tank. I like clip on lights because they are out of the way & not resting on glass top. Do you think I could get two smaller clip on lights for the tank? My budget is tight & I can't get the $100+ lights at this time.
  11. Yikes! I don't want that. Might be time for a cleaning...
  12. Can anyone help me identify these eggs? They have been there about a week. I thought they were African Dwarf Frog eggs, but I goggled pictures and it doesn't look the same as what I found. I also found info that said they'd hatch within 24-48 hours. But I don't think there is any other thing in there that would lay eggs. These are the tank inhabitants: 1 Male Betta 3 African Dwarf Frogs 2 Mystery Snails (I know what those eggs look like) 1 Nerite Snail 3 Kuhli Loaches A couple pond snails.
  13. I live by the ocean & when I'm on walks, there are all kinds of shells. Can I crush or break that up myself? Would having the shells in the tank whole still work at all?
  14. ok - with that & what others have said - and I found an aquarium coop's beginners guide - I think I'm wrapping my head around it all. I would rather not mess around with chemicals & the crushed coral sounds good. I have black substrate and a sponge filter - how would you add it in that situation? I can't add it to the filter media. If I mix it with the substrate - won't it be speckled black & white? Can I just put a bag of it in the corner of the tank?
