  1. 1 betta 7 Red neon blue eyed rainbows, and blue dream shrimps in a 15g Fluval Flex, planted (med density of crypts, swords, bulbitis, java fern, anubius nana, hygro, and hydro taiwaneese (sp?), and Seachem Flourite substrate, established for 7 months. Nothing is new in the tank for about 5-6 months except a floating betta log and magnetic glass cleaner about 3 months ago. Frank started to show some fin rot about 2 months ago. It was not to bad at that time but I cleaned my tanks sponge and did a water change to see if that would make a difference. His fins continued to slowly rot, so I decided to dial back his flow as I know the flex can be to strong for a betta (even tho I have the outtake nozzles pointed towards the glass to dissipate the flow) ordered a spray bar with a flow regulator off Etsy. At this point he is eating and still out and about in the tank. He looks kinda bloated (constipated not pineconing) so I cut back food and feed cyclops (frozen) and his temp is at 78. All this time I am checking his water parameters nitrates are never above 25, ammonia 0, nitrites 0, ph 7.2, we have pretty hard water from a local aquifer with no chlorine (although I still use water conditioner) his fins are still erroding and hes now hiding in the back corner, so I does the trio as per directions on the box. His fins are growing back quite quickly but now not eating and still hiding, so I let him rest for a few days and dose the ichX and Erythromycin a second time as I ran out of General cure after the first round (in Canada so cant get more). I up his temp to 80, hes still bloated even tho he does not seem to be eating. He finally ate some frozen brine shrimp yesterday and today but still hiding, fins are still growing back strong. Ive been watching to see if the rainbows have been picking at him but have not seen that. Im not sure what to do next. I would dose salt but theres plants and shrimp, and I dont have another tank to put him in. Any suggestions? Any help much appreciated. From Candice and Frank the betta
  2. Thanks that does help. This is kind of how I was thinking of doing it. Im terrified of loosing my Congo Tetras if I do it section by section. Do you have a planted substrate that you would suggest?
  3. Oh I didnt realize it was bad for Cories. I have a large school in that tank. Is it just because its sharp? How do you like it otherwise for plant growth? Thanks 🙂 was hoping there was some secret squirrel way to get the substrate switched over Unfortunately not, I don't have another tank big enough for him. Hes probably close to 10" now
  4. Thanks. I think I will try to change a bit at a time. Still worried its going to be a hot mess. My idea was to set up a temp tank and move all of my fish over, then swap the substrate so the cycle crashing is not a big deal. I just dont know how to get all of the shrimp out. Thanks, I love the tank, just hate the dirt 😞 Thanks for the heads up. Do you have another suggestion? I dont want to use a clay based one like the Fluval substrates as I understand that they break down after a few years and need replacing?
  5. Whats wrong with Eco Complete? I thought it was a good easy planted substrate. Any other suggestions? I do like the section at a time but but how would i avoid contaminating the new sand?
  6. Halp! I have a very established (4 year old) 180g planted dirted tank capped with blasting sand. I have a Red Eyed Royal Pleco that likes to dig and has breached the cap one to many times and I am fed up as it absolutely destroys the tank and filter after (plus I think the dirt is past its prime) so I want to rip it all out and replace with Eco Complete. The problem is that I have Rabbit Snails, a billion blue dream shrimp, and a breeding pair of bristlenose plecos so babies of every size. How do you change the substrate without killing off long established shrimp and snail colonies. Even if I left the dirt and heavy capped the old dirt and sand with eco complete I feel like I would bury all my shrimp! Please help me!
  7. Im not sure how they were acting before they died as it was during the night. When I went to bed they seemed fine. I am not sure if my strips are accurate? They are the Tetra brand. So what your saying is with fish that have been shipped, dont acclimate, just put them right in if the temp if fine? The only reason I did acclimate for so long is I was worried the PH was so drastic.
  8. Thank you. I will check them out. Hopefully they ship to Canada 🇨🇦
  9. Thank you. Im pretty upset about it. Especially since I was saving up for them 😢
  10. I do have very hard water, have a separate batch that are currently in that tank since beginning and have not had any issues with them?
  11. I apologize in advance for the long post. Purchased 200 Cardinal Tetras from a wholesaler through a LFS for my 180. So LFS picked them up from the airport, and I took them straight from them. Got them home, 2 bags which seemed like a lot for 200 fish and they were TIIINY. Opened the bag and tested the water. Ammonia was 0 the PH was 8.4 which was surprising. My PH is 7.4 so I was concerned that would be a shock for them. I put them all in a bucket and added 1 cup of water from my quarantine tanks ever 15 minutes, over about 45 minutes (I dont normally take that long but I was really worried about the ph difference) I tested the Ammonia every 5 minutes and it was always 0. Got them into my quarantine tank (with established filter and air, temp at 80 and 1 tbsp salt per 3 gallon as I can not get meds in Canada) they seemed to settle. Next morning 90% were dead. Checked the water parameters temp was 80 ph 7.4 ammonia nitrates nitrites all 0. What did I do wrong?? I did not feed them, was it PH shock? Im pretty choked. Ive been keeping fish for a long time, have a very established 180 (3 years old), heavily planted. Have never had any issues quarantining fish before. Bad batch maybe?
