  1. @DaveO, apparently, per my research females have more body girth and males are narrow. Also, I found it interesting that SAEs don't have swimbladders!
  2. @Tony s it's definitely a pain- I WISH a snail was the solution, any snail. BBA is really a hard one. The only solutions I've ever seen were SAE, Florida Flagfish, and the fancy process that broke here, Reverse Respiration. Blacking out a tank supposedly works but not my jam.
  3. @Tony s I love me a Nerite but they're not really BBA eaters. I have bba in a tank where I have 4 Nerites.
  4. I will say I'm currently keeping one in a 20 gallon tank. He/she will eventually go into a 100+ gallon tank but is currently only 1.5 inches and is doing fine. I also see on my local fish club forum people frequently giving the bigger ones away once they've outgrown the tank. You have to have a plan for the fish and give it up to a better home. I also think 1 is fine. I've read too many things where they get aggressive with each other as they grow.
  5. I was under the impression it was backed too, I was clearly wrong.
  6. These are awesome things to have, but I have a cautionary tale- make sure you have it backed up somewhere. I had one on my phone and that phone broke. I got a new phone and downloaded the app.....but all my info was somehow lost. It was great too, graphs, history, notes, fish treatment, when I got fish, how long tanks were running. All gone now. I haven't even had the heart to start anything like it again- even on paper.
  7. I agree Mango Loach is fitting and would stand out from all the other "Rosy" fish out there. However I'm sure like you said it would just cause confusion and you'd get that fish that goes by multiple names.
  8. Mine like Repashy foods. I usually mix Community Plus with either Super Green or Soilent Green. Just one of those foods would probably work good though. Its spendy but I don't buy it specifically for the shrimp. My bottom feeders get it and I give the shrimp treats.
  9. Its more spendy but worth it IMO. I have an Aquatop 7 gallon cube for my betta and I love it. I got this sponge filter: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07XZ831WR/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 which works great and is compact. I use this light: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B093GZKYM9/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Both Hygger products.
  10. @Chick-In-Of-TheSea ok ok point taken lol! and @Colu seems to agree. Unfortunate part is I don't have Maracyn2 right now but I can't start a course of med until after the weekend as I won't be around for medicating anyway. In the meantime however I've got the meds coming and I've put salt and floated a couple IAL in the tank. To be continued I guess!
  11. Well, @Odd Duck, @Colu and friends, still stumped. Punk is REALLY good at avoiding putting the "bad side" out when I'm trying to look at him AND when I'm trying to take a picture but his eye only seems to have gotten worse. Though not as cloudy, his eye is now swollen pretty good. I'm concerned that he might even lose it but I'm not even sure what is going on at this point. I have not witnessed him rubbing on anything lately but unfortunately I don't have a lot of time to observe him. As it is the pictures I present here are not bright since by the time I was able to catch pics of his injured eye the tank lights went off. I also have a pic of his uninjured eye which he will always show me. What do you think next course of action is? Maracyn? Just salt? I really don't want to take him out of the tank if I can avoid it, 3 gallon QT can be very stressful. I'm at a loss. Last pic is his good eye.
  12. The tank is beautiful and no wonder you have some surviving fry, lots of neat places for them to take cover!
  13. Hi @cmo1922. Just in my own personal experience as an unheated tank keeper and accidental breeder- temperature definitely plays a part. Breeding temps typically range higher than lower though weirdly sometimes cool water changes also trigger activity. I see more breeding activity in my tanks in the hotter months because my tanks are warmer even in my temperature regulated home. However in the cold months they probably run from 70-74 and in the summer from 72-78. Many people when purposefully breed recommend water changes and feeding higher protein foods. This is part of the fun- if you're not breeding on purpose just take notes of your water conditions/food temps and see what pans out! And yes your fish are fine in your cooler waters I'd say into the mid to high 60s does them no harm- you just may get no breeding activity.
  14. Haha! Whoops! Typo! Thanks for seeing that, corrected! Is a pretty little thing. You know how to tell the difference between a male and a female by chance?? I haven't a clue.
  15. Yesterday was time-up day on the quarantine for my new Siamese Algae Eater. Though they'd been pretty inactive (every time I was able to observe which wasn't a lot of time), and fairly colorless, I saw no signs of real illness for the 2 weeks they were there. So I wasn't going to "torture" the little one any further with isolation. I put them in my handy ACO catch cup and started the acclimation process. Here's them waiting: After the allotted acclimation time I let little one go into the tank, they started to move about more than I've seen them do in the last 2 weeks but still looked pale: But in just 15 minutes the little SAE was confidently swimming with the other middle dwellers and colored up nice: I'm really enjoying them so far! What a cool little fish. (some day to be a big fish, yes I'm aware) So I have 2 Hillstream Loaches Kirby and Dyson, so I decided to name this little one Bissell!
  16. I would get the 6. At your local fish store they're not fully grown anyway. It will make them more comfortable from the start, thereby eliminating some of the stress of new environments.
  17. They're not going to be common sadly no. Probably would have to buy them online or have a fish store order them for you if they can.
  18. I'm sorry for that but sadly sometimes in keeping animals there is a steep learning curve. You'll get there if you are determined.
  19. Of course your parameters and the fish preference should always be checked but I'd like to suggest: Emerald Dwarf Rasboras Ember Tetras Kubotai Rasboras
  20. @Tony s haha right? Yep. It works. You can also drain the tank and use it the "regular way"
  21. Personally I think there is nothing in your tank that will harm your fish. The white on the dry parts of your tank are likely from water deposits and are NOT harmful. Not easy to get off. In that case only a razor blade or maybe magic eraser (again unscented ONLY) will get it off. It might be ugly but it will be fine.
