  1. Hi @Moz, welcome to the forum. I've never had a dirted tank but I've capped planting substrate before and added sand later. Rinsing the sand/getting it wet is a good idea regardless as wet sand will usually be less cloudy/loose particles will be rinsed mostly off. What I've done in my small tanks is scoop wet sand into a cup, poor some tank water into the cup so it's totally wet -and slowly go into the water with it, then placing it where it needed to go. You can smooth it easily enough with a hand or other handy tool. It shouldn't do any harm at all, but any changes made to a tank should be carefully monitored.
  2. I gotta give it to him, he's fast. Finished the frames for all the doors and the end cap which will be floating (no open/close). He's added another design element of an extra bar just below the 2 squares that are intended to frame the glass. He used some clamps to "hang" the doors so he could see how they all lined up- hard to photograph but he put a blanket behind so you can kinda get the gist: He has a cool idea we'll probably try for that center space. Stainless material for cars- which is not only decorative and matches both our interests- but will also provide air flow: Yep. I'm diggin this!
  3. Intrepid Partner is working away on the aquarium stand. He's really done a deep dive on what it's going to look like, materials and potential issues. He finished the final welds on the base last week: Just have some finishing work to do to the welds so they're smooth. Eventually the plan is this is getting powder coated. We went and picked up more steel last week so he could start making the doors. After he spent copious amounts of time on fish forums specifically about stands and design issues with them he's decided that the metal framed doors will have air gaps as you see here to allow less condensation and more airflow: He's also decided to do hinge pins to have the potential to easily install and remove the doors as needed. Also, there will be 6 doors- 3 per long side for ease of access anywhere. One short end will be solid and the side facing the wall and likely be the inlet for cords/equipment, may be open or partially- that hasn't been fully decided. He got the hinge pins: And he's started on the frames today: Last week we also picked out glass. He's decided that the upper part of the door will have glass framed in about 12x18 with more metal. So we looked and ended up ordering this: The lower part will be an insert of stained wood. Steadily plugging along....
  4. I've done accidental fish-in cycling many times. Frequent monitoring, water changes, use of water conditioners like Seachem Prime or similar and sparse feeding is all you need to do. Just make sure the fish are comfortable. Because of the more frequent water changes (I've done daily changes for my own sanity) it may take a little longer but the goal is to not stress/hurt or kill - just get the fish through safely- so I sacrifice time if that's all it would cost me.
  5. I'd say the biggest I have is about 10 inches, then new plants grow off the top of those. So you can pull thme and propagate!
  6. Unfortunately little one passed and I have already disposed of the body. My assumption is the damage with that extra bubble was by me accidentally putting a little pressure on an already overinflated fish when hand catching out of the tank. The bubble was still mostly inflated when I pulled them out of the water, but slightly deflated when I took them out and they sat for a minute while I prepped to dispose of them. @Colu @Odd Duck just fyi
  7. @anewbie wow! Too small?! I'm glad my new tank is long!
  8. If you'd like a stem plant and don't just have sand in the tank, an easy plant to try is Bacopa Caroliniana as it grows you can cut tops off and replant, very easy propogator and can get VERY tall. As far as Java, I love the one you have but also consider Java "Narrow Leaf"
  9. Wonderful start! Do yourself a HUGE favor. Be patient and don't add either the shrimp or the Otos until a significant amount of time has passed and the tank pretty well established. :-) They will do better and have more food availability. Add the Rasboras first. I think this tank is going to look great! That Mopani will add a lot of nice tannins to the water which they will all like!
  10. Welcome to the forum @Dreams of Aquariums, this is a great place to interact and learn as you may have already seen. So jump in whenever you feel comfortable doing so!
  11. This may be related to my bolivian ram thread here BECAUSE it is in the same tank but I've been having issues with the Black Neon Tetras in my Angry Man tank for a while. ONLY the females will bloat and bloat and bloat like Violet Beauregarde and then die. I've tried QT, meds, soak and slowly my numbers have dwindled. NOW there's a new one. Yes she's still bloated and I've isolated (but yesterday she was not like this) and now she has a clear bubble out of her own bloated bubble body! W T H?! @Odd Duck @Colu ever seen this before? I'm half tempted to pop it but I doubt that is the right course of action.... This fish, I don't think is saveable but I think I might need to bomb the tank maybe not only with Maracyn2 as is the plan because of a popeye infection in my bolivian but also for whatever is going on here? EVERYONE else in the tank is uneffected- all 10 of my Harlequin Rasboras are perfect, my new SAE, fine, other Black Neons also ok but for one other female now bloating up but NOWHERE near as bad. Whatcha all think?
  12. @DaveO, apparently, per my research females have more body girth and males are narrow. Also, I found it interesting that SAEs don't have swimbladders!
  13. @Tony s it's definitely a pain- I WISH a snail was the solution, any snail. BBA is really a hard one. The only solutions I've ever seen were SAE, Florida Flagfish, and the fancy process that broke here, Reverse Respiration. Blacking out a tank supposedly works but not my jam.
  14. @Tony s I love me a Nerite but they're not really BBA eaters. I have bba in a tank where I have 4 Nerites.
  15. I will say I'm currently keeping one in a 20 gallon tank. He/she will eventually go into a 100+ gallon tank but is currently only 1.5 inches and is doing fine. I also see on my local fish club forum people frequently giving the bigger ones away once they've outgrown the tank. You have to have a plan for the fish and give it up to a better home. I also think 1 is fine. I've read too many things where they get aggressive with each other as they grow.
  16. I was under the impression it was backed too, I was clearly wrong.
  17. These are awesome things to have, but I have a cautionary tale- make sure you have it backed up somewhere. I had one on my phone and that phone broke. I got a new phone and downloaded the app.....but all my info was somehow lost. It was great too, graphs, history, notes, fish treatment, when I got fish, how long tanks were running. All gone now. I haven't even had the heart to start anything like it again- even on paper.
  18. I agree Mango Loach is fitting and would stand out from all the other "Rosy" fish out there. However I'm sure like you said it would just cause confusion and you'd get that fish that goes by multiple names.
  19. Mine like Repashy foods. I usually mix Community Plus with either Super Green or Soilent Green. Just one of those foods would probably work good though. Its spendy but I don't buy it specifically for the shrimp. My bottom feeders get it and I give the shrimp treats.
  20. Its more spendy but worth it IMO. I have an Aquatop 7 gallon cube for my betta and I love it. I got this sponge filter: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07XZ831WR/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 which works great and is compact. I use this light: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B093GZKYM9/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Both Hygger products.
  21. @Chick-In-Of-TheSea ok ok point taken lol! and @Colu seems to agree. Unfortunate part is I don't have Maracyn2 right now but I can't start a course of med until after the weekend as I won't be around for medicating anyway. In the meantime however I've got the meds coming and I've put salt and floated a couple IAL in the tank. To be continued I guess!
  22. Well, @Odd Duck, @Colu and friends, still stumped. Punk is REALLY good at avoiding putting the "bad side" out when I'm trying to look at him AND when I'm trying to take a picture but his eye only seems to have gotten worse. Though not as cloudy, his eye is now swollen pretty good. I'm concerned that he might even lose it but I'm not even sure what is going on at this point. I have not witnessed him rubbing on anything lately but unfortunately I don't have a lot of time to observe him. As it is the pictures I present here are not bright since by the time I was able to catch pics of his injured eye the tank lights went off. I also have a pic of his uninjured eye which he will always show me. What do you think next course of action is? Maracyn? Just salt? I really don't want to take him out of the tank if I can avoid it, 3 gallon QT can be very stressful. I'm at a loss. Last pic is his good eye.
  23. The tank is beautiful and no wonder you have some surviving fry, lots of neat places for them to take cover!
