thank you! when i got the slate stone i googled aquascaping with slate, all i saw online was ppl stacking them like little huts. my mind started tp picture how it would look if i placed them up at a angle i tried diffrent ways to do it. until  i got to this here is my 1st couple attemps at aquascaing kitty says right back at you.😁

The current scape actually looks a lot like a geological formation. A quick Google for slate formations pulls up "Mort Slate" and "Bull Point." I think they look really similar to what you did. 👍

For what it's worth, I think you're best of just making sure the tank is nicely seasoned and the water is pristine, but we all already know that, I think! 😉

I will absolutely warn you, though, that in most LFSs, when I look into the dwarf gourami tanks, up to half of them are clearly showing signs of illness. It's rough, rough, rough.

Thanks for this info. Based on emails I've gotten, my Powder Blue Dude should arrive Tuesday. He'll go into QT alone for at least a month. Thanks to this thread, I've dug up more gourami info that I hadn't known I needed. Fingers crossed!

One of the missing ones has REAPPEARED!

The missing loach has a pretty good scrape on it's back - I've added a little xtra stress coat to the tank and replaced the filter media when I cleaned yesterday. Anything else I can do to help him out? Nothing new introduced in a long time parameters have reamained stable since cycle completed in September. We did have a power outage for about 2.5 hours overnight, but the tank was still at 76 degrees this morning.

I'm glad another was found! Whew!

I don't have loaches, but I guess the idea is the same for any species: ideal water parameters, good nutrition, and time. If the scrape looks infected, I'd say to put up a separate post to get good ideas of how to help it. Maybe keep the lights lower than usual, since they like to hide?

Powder blue dwarf gouramis and any other Trichogaster Lalius colorways (except wild caught fish, which are incredibly hard to find) are genetically weak. They're susceptible to all kinds of illness and tend to come in harboring Dwarf Gourami Iridovirus, which is an invariably fatal condition.

Thanks for mentioning this. My new powder blue is marked online as "being processed" today, so I'll get myself clued in about that virus.

I am leaning towards guppies or endlers.  I was thinking of getting males & females because I've never had fish babies before.  I know they will multiply like crazy but I've always wanted something of mine to breed

It is fun! I have a suggestion aimed at long-term good. You could get only 1 or 2 females, put your very favorite male with her/them for a week, then just wait. When in great conditions and old enough, endlers give birth about every 3.5 weeks - that's pretty often! The fry that turn out to be male will probably be easy enough to keep, but the females get more out of control since they're larger and will eventually become fry-making machines. Maybe this way, you could have the joy without the overwhelm.

I think I would need a few dwarf gouramis together, correct?  Or would one be happy by its lonesome in a tank with corys, shrimp and snails?

Not speaking from experience, but I'm pretty sure gouramis can go solo, much like a betta can. I think that's a common way to house males, particularly. If you're interested in having a single gourami, I'd say that's worth the time to research. It seems promising.

Appreciate it and keep those suggestions coming!

Endlers might be worth looking at, just because they're similar to guppies, but usually more durable. You could even compromise by getting a guppy-endler hybrid.

A small shoal of platies would have their needs met by that tank. A quick google of something like "platy types images" would give you a quick overview of options.

And since you mentioned dwarf powder blue gouramis, I hear several females can live together. I think female powder blues can live with female honeys - not certain.

Well definitely taking space in the tank as a consideration (since I've got corys and snails mainly at the bottom, would prefer mid to top of tank for new fish - so good point about apistos!).  I do have a little chart going with water temp, peaceful/aggressive, tank size, etc to make sure I get something compatible.  I think I'm leaning against the rams based on temp.  I have naturally high pH so maybe the tetras would be best?   Meets the mid to top of tank requirement and will be fine with similar temps as the corys.

Yeah, the main thing that steered me away from rams is the temp.

I had it in my head that tetras need a pH that is low or in the low 7's. Could be wrong.

I love Anubis and I have always planted mine in the substrate.  They grow slow but flourish.  I woujj lol d like some tall grassy plants for the back and some carpet ones for the sides.  I do plan on putting horn wort in there also.

This is exactly what I was going to suggest. Anubias because they're so easy, hornwort because it's so good at sucking out nitrates, and valisneria because it's like grass. For me, val has a strong tendency to get yellow tips that lead to a melted leaf, but it also has a strong tendency to not die. 👍

7 small cory cats, a few amano shrimp and 1 or 2 nerite snails.  Thoughts I've had so far are:

    • male female pair of apistogrammas (cacautoides maybe?)
    • dwarf powder blue gourami
    • group of green neon tetras
    • dwarf neon rainbowfish
    • German blue ram (although I think they require too high of a water temp for the corydoras)

Any thoughts on these?  Suggestions for others I should consider?   Thanks!

It sounds like the ones you've already decided on tend to stay on the sides and bottom of the tank. So maybe something that prefers the open water? I've never had apistos, but I'm thinking they stay toward the bottom, and the others like being up in the middle. Not sure.

Something that has helped me is to write down all the water parameters needed by the ones I know I want, then look at where the overlap is. Then pick new tank mates that can be healthy inside of the overlap you've already got.

An easy example is your mention of temperature. I'm thinking the max temp of your 3 species is around 78? So if, for example, you added a species that needs to be at 76+, you've got a super narrow temp range to try to control. The wider you can make your parameter ranges for a tank, the easier it is to maintain.

I've been thinking about adding some blue to my community

🙂 I'd been looking for years, and there's not a ton of options. Limitations for me were water parameters, tank size, tank mates, and whether I would still enjoy the blue if there were a lot of other colors. Deciding I very much preferred solid blue limited me to a powder blue gourami, or a solid blue betta. Of the 2, only the gourami could be found online.

If you'd enjoy the blue even though it's just on a bit of the fishy, there are a lot more options.

    6. Perfect my aquascaping in 29 and 10 gallon tanks.

What are some of your goals for this new year either in you hobby or life!  Anything new exciting coming up?

Only a suggestion: If you trade out "perfect" for "improve," it might feel better.

I'd like to stabilize or simplify my water critters. I'll soon have 3 new species in QT, but other than that, I plan to not add any other new species this year. And I need to reduce the total number of bodies of water I have, just so it's easier to keep track of water quality. I've already taken the first step toward that.

That reminds me I really want to know what the number 1 fish is

I just remembered seeing this. I've wanted a blue fish for years (my fav color of fish), who can also gulp fry (omg endlers).

I ordered a male powder blue gourami. Then I saw @Irene's video this morning with a beautiful powder blue gourami! Seeing her beautiful fishy, I think I made the right choice.

  13. You guys are magnificent.  It looks like it was 2 days ago now that I suddenly couldn't take any more interaction, and stepped away from the forum. I'm really not sure whether or not it was good that I did!

On one hand, if I'd seen all these comments, I might've pursued some arrangement with the lfs owner, and gotten everything I wanted for a pretty low price.

On the other hand, I instead in these last 2 days ordered the fish online. If they do arrive healthy, then I suppose I've got my solution. But if they don't, I'm really going to wish I'd been on here and tried the lfs idea. Fingers crossed.

Know that I appreciate each of you for stepping up to try to figure this out for me. Sorry I cut out for a couple days - I'd really lost my ability to even.

I think most of us have a fish that should win an award for what we've put them through. 🙂

Welcome to the forum! Your tanks look amazing.

If the owner was kind enough to help you in the way they did, is there any reason you can't have them help you pick out new fish?

Particularly since I know exactly what I want, this might work. I'll roll the idea around. Thanks.

Yea maybe they can let you in either before open or after close some day. It's a shame that people in general are so selfish these days. In my area many refuse to wear a mask just so they can hopefully get in a confrontation about it. But that's West Virginia in a nutshell for ya. I better be quiet now or I'll get in trouble lol.

For lack of more forum-appropriate words, I'll just tell you that I hear you.

I just wondered if you living in a colder area is why you can't get fish shipped.

I think the issue is unpredictability of mailing during holidays.

I know there have been a few times I couldn't be with @TheCzarista when she was shopping for fish, and she video chatted me so I could look.  Maybe you have someone who could go in and let you be there virtually?

I don't understand the cold area question.

But no, I don't have anyone. I thought of that, but after that person were to go in and potentially be exposed, I couldn't be around them for about 10 days. So that's not really a viable option.

  17. For various medical reasons, I haven't been able to go inside a fish store for about 6 years. Last time I went, I bought my 1 angelfish, and he had to be my only fish for at least 4 years.

Maybe a year ago, I ordered endlers online. A few months ago, I ordered platies. They've all been sanity savers.

For the last week, I thought I was going to be able to go into a great lfs, hand off a lot of endlers, and buy a few more species I've been wanting for a long time. I put in a lot of work to do it. I emailed with the owner about the endlers, watched videos of the inside of the store, and looked up online posts about the place and people. I knew that I'd need to prioritize, get the fish I wanted in priority order, and just get out. But still, I was going to get to buy fishies, in person, all on one day. At least, surely, the one I wanted most. I was so excited.

But it wasn't long ago that I moved. I've been doing all my shopping as delivery or curbside pickup, so I hadn't realized that the new state I live in doesn't require everyone to keep their masks on in public places. Unfortunately, I'm among the people for whom mask mandates are in place. So after years of wanting to, and a week of thinking I'd get to and planning ahead carefully, and being so excited, I didn't get to go in.

An employee came out to take my extra endlers. Then I waited in the parking lot for the store owner to come out. I spent that time carefully not looking in the store's open door because the one glance I gave made me want to cry. The owner came out and gave me a card stating that I have store credit for X dollars... that I can't even use.

I'm guessing a lot of you can sympathize with how disappointing this is.

I'd been afraid something might go wrong, so I'd had in mind that if it did, I'd order fish online when I got home (at least the one I want most), and it'd arrive near my birthday. Turns out that because of the time of year, nobody's shipping fish until well after my birthday. Rightly so, but it's so disheartening.

I guess this is similar to a "my main tank broke" post. I just wanted to share my sadness with people who understand how big of a deal it is. Thanks for caring, guys. This is a good group.
