  1. I definitely agree with @Bobbie that the betta needs to be the last addition to the tank - and, I also agree that the attitude of the betta is crucial...and the size of the other inhabitants might matter as well - the more comparable in size they are, they less likely the betta is to consider eating them. I have had success with lambchop rasboras, shrimp (short nose algae and sakura orange), Corydoras julii, nerite snails, and bladder snails in my 20 gallon long with Pete...but he's a super chill dude - more likely to be a bro than a predator to anything close to his size or larger. I do suspect Pete snacks on any baby shrimp...he spends a lot of time under the driftwood. 🤔
  2. @James Black - I know it! It happened so fast! Spritz was very special! Thank you for your support! 💙
  3. And, of course, now that I've spotted Peg in the tank again, I don't see the white stuff on the back/head anymore. 🤦‍♀️ My paranoia must be at level 900 right now! Thanks for talking some sense into me, @Colu!
  4. @Colu - it seems white and fluffy...but a scraped back is not out of the question! I might monitor for another day to see if it gets any worse? I will go ahead and water change. I'll see if I can get a clearer picture!
  5. I have a tiny Julii corydora - it's always been smaller than the rest and its fins look different from the others...which is not really an issue. But, as I was observing the tank this morning, I noticed that there was some oddness. I took a little video - check out the top of the head (the area between the eyes and the dorsal fin). Does that look like fungus to you? If so, should I treat the whole tank? Do you notice anything else I should be concerned about? Does the body condition and activity look okay? As of this moment, I am planning on doing a water change to vacuum the substrate and starting Ich X...I'm also planning on doing more research about diets and adding some frozen foods to the regimen...I'm worried little Peggy isn't getting enough of the right stuff to eat. I'm not seeing any symptoms in the other fish in the tank - I actually was pretty excited to see what I thought was some friskiness with the other cory cats in the tank. So, I'm trying to decide if treating the entire tank is the move...or if I should try to isolate Classic Peg. Water parameters: Temperature - 77 F Ammonia - 0 Nitrite - 0 Nitrate - 25 GH -75 KH - 10 pH - 6.6 Chlorine - 0
  6. I just checked out Gianne's YouTube channel - hoorayyyyy high school level science teachers (I am a Physical Science teacher in 9th grade in SC!) How do you juggle school and breeding bettas/being an aquarist? Is it easy or tough?? Do you find that you do less breeding during the school year? Or, is it a stress reliever that you lean on to unwind? Have you ever used bettas in the classroom to help teach a concept?
  7. I'd be really interested to know if the algae battles were different continent to continent - black beard algae is kicking my butt at the moment in the 20 gallon... I love your tank @Cork fish keeper!! Since you're improving with your treatments...don't stop! You're on the right track!! Also...out of curiosity...what's your current lighting time period? And, what type of lighting are you using?
  8. @Randy - if y'all ever need a meme curator or a commentator for the live stream...you've got my email! 😜👍
  9. In case y'all were curious about the prizes awaiting the meme winners...can you believe @Kevin green's winning post was the 9th forum post ever?? 😱😂👍
  10. Oh....their Maui Wowie (no longer on the menu, but still order-able!) is THE BEST. Jerk chicken, pesto, bacon, banana peppers, and pineapple...yummmmm!
  11. Thank you @lefty o and @Jungle Fan and all of my forum fam - I appreciate your support more than you know! 💙 I was SO PROUD of little Spritz...I thought I was going to get to hang out with him for at least 3 more years. I'm definitely feeling steamrolled by the whole situation. Hopefully, Pete can hold down the fort in the community tank. 🤞
  12. I have some very very sad news...Spritz passed away some time during the night last night. I've been trying to figure out what happened - I cannot believe he went that quickly! Less than 2 days from obvious symptoms to death. The only things I can think of are: He was stressed/injured during transfer to my house, and a bacterial infection moved in. That was on June 14th. He was stressed during our 10 day vacation, and a bacterial infection moved in (I did have someone come in to feed, but she was only able to come over once...and when I returned home, Spritz was hiding...which is not his norm). It's been two weeks since then. I pulled a plant out of the substrate on Sunday with the water change and transferred it to the 20. There was something wrong with the water change I did on Sunday. (But, by 20 L seems okay 🤞...so hopefully, it's not that!) Overfeeding. I'd love to know what happened so that I don't mess up again...but I'm not sure where to go from here. Swim in peace sweet fish!! 💙 A blown out picture from Sunday:
  13. It is the ease of planting for me, for sure! I don't have any root feeders in the tank currently...but I'd really love to move some of my crypts from the 20 to the 5 - they're kind of starting to take over! I will try your planting method, for sure! @Colu - I've got some Epsom salt, and I'm going to dunk Spritz tomorrow - it's so odd how quickly he declined...I just checked on him and he seems to be at a tilt - face down, butt up. I hope it's just constipation and the Epsom will work it out! I'm worried about the little guy! He's acting really pitiful! But, I will say, his fins are still waving proudly - not clamped at all - so, that gives me hope!
  14. So, I have some sad news...Spritz is having a health issue...just noticed this morning. I THINK it's constipation...so, I added a small amount of aquarium salt (I think @Colu mentioned at one point that salt is a muscle relaxant and could help with constipation) and have stopped feeding him. I dissolved a tablespoon of the Fritz salt in some dechlorinated water and added about half of that to the tank...I figured I could add more later, if needed. My water parameters are okay (0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 0 nitrate, pH of 6.8, temp of 77.5 F, GH of 75ish, KH of 40ish, 0 chlorine). He is bloated and lethargic (currently chilling under the heater with his snail buddy, Figgy), his color is off, he's breathing more heavily than normal, and he's not eating. I'll continue monitoring...but if anyone has any experience with betta constipation, I would love to hear about it!!
  15. I love his name - Inigo is PERFECT - that dark upper lip looks just like a mustche! My betta, Spritz, has gotten some darker scales on both of his sides (just like Inigo), so I think @Colu is right about the coloring changing as a betta ages - it definitely happens! @Maggie can attest too, I am sure! 😆👍
  16. I think your sad bowl is so beautiful!! I really want shrimpies to work for you - part of me is just like...let it sit and be! And...part of me is like...stick a nerite buddy in it so you can get some 💩 action, and maybe a dash of bottled bacteria...and let it roll for a few months. I'm excited to see what you do - it really is very pretty...in all of its iterations!!
  17. I'm with @quikv6 - I like the longs because of how short (in height) they are...and how much change you can have with hardscape and foliage across the length of the tank. I only have a 20 long...so I have very limited experience...but I really enjoy tanks that are about 12" tall!
  18. I concur with @lefty o and @Guppysnail - it's the grey antlers for me! 🦌
  19. @TheDukeAnumber1 - love the new signature!! 🤣👍
  20. And, here they are! 🥳🥳🥳 THE WINNERS OF THE MEME CONTEST! 🥳🥳🥳 Congrats to @MAC, @MickS77, @TheDukeAnumber1, and @Kevin green! PM me your mailing address if you're interested in a modest Nerm Week Sticker prize! 😜👍 @Cory I have a new appreciation for the difficulty of meme commentary - it's not easy...as evidenced by my pitiful jokes, haha! HAPPY NERM WEEK TO ALL!!!
  21. @ARMYVET - I need to post some updates!! My tank looks vastly different now! 😂
  22. What a looker! 😍 BB is definitely beautiful! I love the red variations in his fins! My Pete came from Texas, too. They must grow 'em good out there! 😜👍
