  1. @LC Roszell you can always put a little gravel in the bottem to weigh them down.
  2. Those were my thoughts exactly, thanks for the confirmation. The aquariums (and ponds) still have their sponge filters and I am using these for the coral buffering. Maybe I'll just take that extra bit of sponge out anyway.
  3. In fairness I got my first aquarium in the 70s with an under gravel filter. My dad still had his metal frame from the 50s but I am pretty sure they one he set up for me he just made himself. I still had to walk uphill both ways wherever I went.
  4. @Cory what do you think of my idea to use them to deliver hardness from the crushed coral? My thought is it will be more active then having it in a media bag since I don't want it loose. It is of course Aquarium Coop crushed coral.
  5. For whatever reason I was once told to also add a pinch of Epsom (magnesium sulfate) salt too. I still do it but have no idea if it really makes any difference.
  6. I have been using @Dean’s Fishroom system of 36 hour hatch, drain all the shrimp & water while discarding the floating eggs, strain and rinse half the shrimp while saving that water, then put the remaining shrimp plus all the water back in for another 12(ish) hours. So far this has worked great for me and I don't see any dead shrimp when I go to strain and rinse the second half. At least they have twice the amount of water per shrimp as before? They may also have a high ammonia tolerance. I found this science paper but have not read the whole thing. Below is the abstract: Effect of pH and Decapsulation on the Toxicity of Ammonia to the Brine Shrimp Artemia franciscana Abstract Artemia franciscana were hatched and tested for tolerance to ammonia at pH 6.5 and 8.5 in artificial seawater with a salinity of 17 ‰. Nauplii seemed to be less tolerant of ammonia at pH 6.5 despite the fact that more of the ammonia is in the ionized form (NH4+). It is suggested that this greater sensitivity is a result of the NH4+ competing with the Na+ during gut transfer. Nauplii hatched from decapulated cysts were more tolerant of ammonia than those hatched from whole cysts, probably because of a greater energy reserve.
  7. I float the guppy grass in my bare bottom tanks and container ponds. I find it grows easier for me than anything else I try. I have trouble with Java Moss and I find the moss makes much more of a mess than Guppy Grass.
  8. I have very soft water here in NYC and I've gotten tired of having to keep a media bag of crushed coral sitting in my bare bottom aquariums. I decided to give a cheap box filter a try loaded with the crush coral instead of the air stone. This way it is doing double duty and I left the course sponge it came with in it too. This is my first time using them and so far so good. What's everyone else's opinion on the usefulness of box filters? Do you have any good hot rod tricks?
  9. That would be sweet! Edit: actually I have tetras I know are over 7 years old so maybe I already do.
  10. I think the challenge is going to be keeping the IV bag oxygenated but if anyone can figure it out it'll be you @Cory
  11. I have started two Endler N-class colonies that of course are breeding. One colony is in a 15 gallon outdoor tub and I am leaving them to their own devices. The second colony is currently split between one 10g and one 20g with a few Marina breeder boxes. For this colony I want to attempt to breed the best males. When I got them I took the two best males (which were identical) and put them with three females to get started. They were all young and I can't say for certain the females were virgin but that's fine. My question is does anyone have a specific line breeding program they like to follow in written or chart diagram? I am thinking about should I start to breed F1 females back to P1 males or do people prefer to breed the best of each generation to themselves and then breed back to P1 around F5? I know I may be over thinking this and the best idea may be to let them do their thing and pull out inferior males as I go (which would go to the other colony or eventually a males only tank for my kids). However I want to use these Endlers to get good at this before moving onto a more complicated fish. Thanks!
  12. Sometimes I just use one of these, the x-large is about 5 gallons so you can just divide medication in half if you don't need a whole 10g for the fish. I kept the box it came in and store it, a sponge filter, small heater and air pump with it so its always ready to go in case I need it.
  13. I get them as hitchhikers on pond plants but only get Ramshorn on aquarium specific plants.
  14. Weird, my fish really don't care for them and they love almost everything. I've stopped trying to feed it.
  15. Since my first dream product turned out to already exist (thanks everyone!) here is another: An auto-dosing pump for planted aquariums that first measures for various fertilizer concentrations in the aquarium and then auto-doses the correct missing ferts. So I would probably just set up with Easy Green and Iron but for someone doing Estimative Index (EI) Fertilization Method it could be more options. Maybe throw in an auto-water change if the concentrations get too high for EI as long as I am fantasizing.
  16. I used to use one of those minnow traps, to catch minnows!
  17. Well look at that, problem solved. Now I have to dream something else up. Thanks!
  18. Yes, I use those and they are great but they don't have Ammonia on them. In fact using one on my cherry shrimp aquarium was my inspiration for this thread.
  19. For fun, because I am genuinely curious and maybe to inspire @Cory, what's your dream aquarium product that doesn’t exist? One that just occurred to me is a quick test strip for Ammonia. The one thing I do worry most about is an Ammonia spike due to an irregularity (dead fish etc) that I might not notice right away. My issue is my aquariums have to be negligent resistant because I have three young kids and pre-virus traveled for work a lot. So regular water changes can be spotty. I've tried those in tank circle ones but they always expire before doing anything (which is good I guess) and I am never going back to test tube drop testing. I burnt out on that years ago. Let's hear about your non-existent dream product! (desktop aquarium added for post thumbnail)
  20. I keep a small batch with the hatcheries and the rest in the freezer. The fridge/freezer is too far away form the hatcheries to get them out every day. Previously I only hatched on occasion or for limited runs but I've recently ramped up to every day so I assume my system will evolve.
  21. Mine is based off of @Dean’s Fishroom design with some modifications. I guess now his former design. I have enjoyed reading this thread so much I went ahead and set up a second one on Friday.
  22. Here is mine based off the Dean design. However I use a fishing mouth spreader to hang it.
  23. I have been hoping for a good old fashioned forum for aquarium fans for a long time. My other hobby has a robust one and I am excited Cory is taking this on. My family moved into a new home last year that has let me expand my fish keeping. Here is what I have going right now: 55 gallon display 3.4 gallon desk red cherry shrimp 40 gallon 3 goldfish container pond 15g container pond, 20g tall and 10g for N Class Endler breeding project that are the beginning of a fish room, or at least wall
