  1. Mine is very typical and too common which is bettas don't need filtration. Mine still did ok due to the consonant water changes I did but still. Wish I had a better story.
  2. They will die off in the fresh water in less than a day if not eaten. I've never tried to time it but I am sure it's under 12 hours. However they are so tiny I doubt you'd get an ammonia spike unless you overfeed a lot and go too long without a water change.
  3. I think freezing your own BBS is a great option. I keep a tray of frozen BBS to have for extra treats, if for whatever reason I screw up a hatch or if I have critical need for it when I didn't already have a hatch going. Edit - Or I run out because I held off ordering eggs in hopes of Aquarium Co-op releasing their own BBS product to order! Which I did order the moment they came out but I think I am going to end up with a one or two day gap between running out of the old and getting the new. #firstworldproblems
  4. You don't have to use marine salt for bbs. You can also use any rock salt too as long as it's 100% rock salt. That is all freshwater aquarium salt is. You can use the Fritz salt the Coop already sells or you can buy giant bags at a big box store for $5 but they don't run as clean.
  5. I was eagerly awaiting these as I am about to run out of my current supply and would have to order more. Low and behold I saw them on the Coop site today and ordered them. Looking forward to testing them out.
  6. The shell build out has begun after some false starts. One wall in the laundry/future fishroom in our 100 year old house is a hodge podge of framing, plaster and lathe. Today I got the drywall up and seams plastered. Before: After:
  7. Found eggs on the glass from my bronze cories that miraculously had not all been eaten by the tetras yet. I put them in a specimen container with some methaline blue. We'll see what happens.
  8. I saw last minute that we would have a temperature drop last night into the 40s after it had been projected to stay in the mid 60s for the next week. I have N Class Endlers I got from Adrian HD himself both inside and outside in a 15 gallon container pond. I raced to setup another indoor aquarium and net the Endlers out through all the guppy grass and floating plants in the dark with a headlamp. I did my best but worried I might have missed a few. This morning I went out and sure enough in the sunlight I saw a couple upside down on the bottom and the water was about 48 degrees (laser thermometer). I netted them out and they wiggled! I got a container to put them in and then added just a bit of warmer water and they started to revive. I went back and found another 7 all of whom looked dead and were lying on the bottom upside down and all of whom revived. Here they are after reviving and are now with the rest of the colony. Amazing.
  9. I like them all but for I also think the bigger the better. My goal is to get a 125g or bigger.
  10. I agree. I also just read the Orbit app is not working well with multiple units of the garden hose valves but they are working on an upgrade to resolve those issues. If you only need one for something it's already a great way to go Given another 12-24 months I think think the programing and maybe price will be where the smart plugs are now. What's fun is the apps all follow the weather in order to not water your lawn when it is raining. I wonder if they could be hacked to automatically water change when a storm comes in to encourage spawning?
  11. BBS, daphnia (bigger fry) and Aquarium Coop fry food
  12. Thanks guys, I am hoping to build them myself to help with the overall cost of the fishroom build but it's good to have a solid proven backup.
  13. "Does it come in black?", Bruce Wayne. I guess I should have mentioned that although that does look like a good product.
  14. I am looking to make 8 to 10 Matten filters myself rather than buy them for 10g aquariums on the narrow end. 10.75" x 11.75" x 2″ should do it. I have been looking up sources for the sponge with a medium or course PPI but have come up short. Aquarium Coop does not sell them except for their 9x9 which is too small so I think it is ok to ask on the forum. I have looked through Ebay and Amazon but I have either not been happy with the size or I know I'd have to buy a few to get the right one. Anyone have any experience?
  15. Just make sure to do a nice long fill test before putting it inside!
  16. Ok per @Dean’s Fishroom I have been researching bluetooth/wifi inline valves to drain my aquariums. So far i see two options, 1) a sprinkler system control panel with bluetooth/wifi controlled at the panel or with an app that is then hardwired to traditional sprinkler inline solenoid valves or 2) bluetooth/wifi enabled garden hose timers that are controlled with an app. Within one manufacturer it may be possible to do both, I think the Orbit system can. That would be the best to have one system for both fill and drain. The trick is the number of valves to be used for daining. The sprinkler controllers generally have limits at 6, 8 or 12 so that is too few for the average fishroom. They make sense on the fill side as zones but not individual drains. So far the Orbit B-hyve looks to be the best option for the drain lines but averages $40 retail. The other downside is you can't throttle the valve for a slower drain although I guess you could rig a pressure reducer on the outflow that would slow it some. These could also be used as the solinod valve for your fill potentially. I will have to contact the manufacturer to get clear on what is doable. Either way it'll probably be too expensive for me to implement now but I can design the system to upgrade.
  17. Yes, you go it. I looked it up on planet catfish, and that is certainly it. I wish I had an aquarium I could get 6+ to put them in. Thanks!
  18. I was at my LFS, came around a corner and there was a tank of the largest cories I have ever seen. It's hard to tell scale from the photo but they are at least 3 inches and very high and wide. I asked the manager and he said the wholesaler just lists them as "jumbo cories." I've hadCorydoras splendens and they are not those. Has anyone heard of them?
  19. Found a refrigerator bin at the dollar store (for $8) that is a perfect fit in a 10 gallon for a potential fry system.
  20. That's a good one as you can really customize what you use. I would probably just use sponge on the bottom and filter floss on the top. I run a bigger Eheim classic on my 55 and I've never had any issues with power outages.
  21. Oh that is a most excellent idea. I'll start researching that as the access to the ball valve is going to be very tight with the low ceiling I have to work with in my basement. Thanks Dean!
  22. Fantastic. Once I get my mini-fishroom up and running I hope to be able to keep a couple of CARES species for conservation also. I loved the conversation with Dr. Lyons and have been reading up on the Goodeid Working Group to see if that would be a good way for me to get involved in conservation.
  23. I am a member of the Brooklyn Aquarium Society and they have a virtual presentation every month and have worked hard to extend or deepen sponsor support. Beyond that we have not had anything in person. Space is at a premium in NYC and hard to make social distance events possible. That said since our Covid RO in the state has been less than 1 for a while so hopefully we can soon.
