  1. For what it's worth, I've put window cling patterns on the outside of my sliding glass door to prevent birds crashing into it and they've stayed on for over a year now! 🙂
  2. Hello, I'd love to add some drift wood to my 40-gallon fresh water community tank so have been reading this forum. I live in the woods so can I just use any interesting looking piece of wood after soaking it in water and hydrogen peroxide? I'm pretty sure I will avoid black walnut because they are super high in tannins and many plants will not grow near these trees due to that... Any suggestions are welcome! Thank you! Think SPRING!!!
  3. Thank you very much! This makes a lot of sense! I appreciate your helpful advice and time!! Be well.
  4. I've read Braids' discussion in the topic Whole House Nitrate Filter on order! GULP! I'm still wondering if there is a benefit to installing a UV disinf. unit to keep things healthy or, as one contributer alluded, is it overkill? I have a 40 gal. fresh water tank and use our well water. The well is over 100' deep and we've been drinking from it for over 20 years. We are surrounded by a small patch of woods and beyond those are crop fields. I think there's a lot of filtration from tree roots and the soil's high lime content in central NY?? Anyhow, before finding Aquarium Co-op, I thought I could just buy live plants, plop them into the tank media and they'd grow just fine. They were dead within a few months. I've since learned they need fertilizing beyond just fish droppings. So I'd like to try live plants but feeding them this time. I've also experienced my two oldest neons getting Neon Tetra Disease so when I saw that commercial fish stores use UV disinfecting units, I wondered if that would be a good catch-all for my tank. Any thoughts on this? Thanks so much, Fellow Fish Peeps!! 🐡🐟 🐠
  5. From Fishy Thoughts: And it cuts easily with just about anything. I used a razor blade, drill bits and hole saws for cutting mine. It allowed me to cut the top so that any openings were very minimal. Hope that helps!
  6. Great points! I have a south window about 6' away so will try the medium to low light plants. Aq.Co-op has good articles about plants... Thank you all for sharing such helpful thoughts! It's so fun to keep learning about this hobby!
  7. Thanks everyone! We were thinking of caulking the ends to keep moisture out and prevent black mold or mildew. You've been very helpful! Best wishes with your fishes!!
  8. Twin Wall 8mm Polycarbonate Sheet, Clear, Strong Impact and Shatterproof, All-Weather Outdoor Greenhouse Covering Thank you!
  9. Looks awesome. My husband built a cabinet over my 40 gal. aquarium & placed it in a wall. Black mold developed on the wood. I'm going to repaint with mildew resistant paint used for wet areas.
  10. Ok, I was hoping I'd find out these symptoms are normal for fish in their old age. Thank you so much.
  11. Hi Colu. Thank you for your reply! It definitely has paler blue scales on it than the other neons. The blue area is now more silver. It swims okay just not much - probably because it cannot see. Would you suggest removing it from tank? I check multiple times each day to make it's still alive. I dont want the other fish to eat it when it dies and become infected. I also feel bad euthanizing it if it's just old age. 😞
  12. I have a 40 gallon freshwater tank now but began with a 10 gallon tank in the 1990s & kept it for about 6 years. I didn't know about Aquarium Co-op but asked a lot of questions at the fish shops. I don't think I even had internet then! I ended up getting 3 marble hatchet fish for the top area, about 6 neon tetras for mid-tank, and a plecostomus for the bottom of the tank. I had a mix of live and plastic plants, a heater, and filter and the fish seemed to do quite well. I used our well-water which is high in calcium and has iron algae in it. The fish didn't seem to mind. I've learned many fish are adaptable. If the tank was near a window it got much more algae growth so ended up moving it. I learned to do a 1/3 water change about every two months rather than monthly to preserve the balance in the tank. It's a learn-as-you-go-hobby and quite rewarding! Don't get discouraged just keep learning and trying your best! I still have tons to learn! Best wishes!
  13. Thank you! That is really quite interesting! I'm wondering about age causing a fish's spine to bend as arthritis may in a human. The neon is so tiny, I can't really see the scales to that extent. I appreciate that bit of info though!
  14. Hello, My question is Do Fish Show Old Age, particularly neon tetras? I have a 40 gallon freshwater tank with about 14 community fish: white skirted tetras, neon tetras, a Chinese algae eater, and a few hatchet fish. Some of my fish are over 6 years old. One of my neon tetras has a bent spine exactly like that shown in Corey's video, "The Truth About Neon Tetra Disease". It also no longer has eyes. I thought it was because of the advanced age of the tetra. It still eats and seems to manage. Corey mentioned NTD is often wrongly diagnosed & over the years I have had one or two other neons get the bent spine but no other symptoms so thought it was just old age. Do fish show their age this way or is it suffering from NTD and I should I euthanize it? (I do not have another aquarium to quarantine it.) No other fish show these symptoms. Any help will be much appreciated!! Thank you very much!
