I think it's very unlikely that they are physically exploding, if they were unable to poop or eating to death they would bloat up and look like they have dropsy, not burst. This is my experience as well.

Sounds like they are dying from other reasons and are being eaten, a picture if another one dies would help. Any signs of illness or odd behavior before they die?
