  1. I saw that you went from plastic plants to live plants. That's a good step. (IMO) If you change the gravel to a more natural color it will make everything look better. The wood will stand out more and so will your fish. You don't want the attention on the gravel. These are just some suggestions.
  2. I agree, if they were allowed in the U.S. I would keep the dwarf species but none of the big ones as they would need a massive tank or a whole pond. They're like cooler bichirs to me.
  3. Looks like green spot algae, but the white stuff could be bacteria or some type of algae. If turns out to be algae you need to cut back on 1. light 2. ferts 3. food. It could be all of those or just 2 of them, or even just one. You must find out what the cause of algae is. If it's algae.
  4. Otos only after 6 months after the tank has been set up. If not they might starve because they don't have enough to eat. Mine eat algae wafers, but I got lucky. I killed 4 of them before I was successful.
  5. Thank you Colu. Is there a name for the purple on the belly of a cichlid? It happens on kribs too.
  6. I would like to do a 20 gallon ram tank. How many could go in there? And is it the female that has no blue specs in the black spot or is it the male?
  7. I would do some type of schooling fish in there. Like a chub or something.
  8. Yeah that's what I thought. Mine was only 4 inches so I kept him a 10 gallon and then built a small pond for him. He loved it, once the water came back I let him go.
  9. What else would you have in there? I think it would be awesome tank. Maybe some type of darters?
  10. Yes, the contrast orange and blue is amazing! I would throw in minnows for mine to eat. He also loved crickets. They stare at you like cichlids. What is the appropriate tank size for a pumpkin seed ?
  11. Never mind I just looked up a picture but that's not them. They looked like the larger sunfish like this. I loved the electric blue on his face. I have seen E. Zonatum but every time I go to catch them they dart under the bank of the creek and I can't get them out. Or they hide in roots from a nearby tree.
  12. I most likely caught a E. Zonatum. There was a "pair" in my creek. I don't know much about them but there were 2 fish that were always together. They had a lot of fry that got stuck in a mud puddle (in summer when my creek was dried up) but I couldn't save them all. The ones that I did save I let them go after they were about 2 inches.
  13. I was a bit confused but I understand now. These are the pygmy fish I was talking about, I never knew they associated the name sunfish with it.
  14. I thought sun fish were like pumpkinseeds. I haven't found any pygmies near me. I would have to drive for a few hours.
  15. Rainbow shiners are next on my list if I get rid of the koi. I would have to alter my pond though. They like shallow areas to spawn so I would make it longer rather than deeper. Of course I'd add caves so racoons can't get them.
  16. They live in my state. A little bit more south of me. I have tried sunfish, I think it was a pumpkinseed. He was awesome but I wanted koi so I let him go back in my creek. They are like small bass.
  17. So because your tank has low stock and so much area for bacteria you don't need a filter. That makes sense. And then you reuse the water for shrimp. I love it, that's great. I have a koi pond that is about 450-600 gallons and I've been thinking about selling the koi and doing a native tank. What is the little native blue and black fish? I can't remember the name.
  18. If your kid is not eating, what do you do? You leave the food on the table. Once there hungry they will eat. When it's 10F out you don't eat as much as you would when it's 90F. He'll eat eventually but you should also raise the temperature, at least to 82. But I would move the guppies, endlers, and cherry shrimp. Unless you have another tank for him that would be better (therefore you wouldn't have to move all the others).
  19. That tank looks amazing, is it yours? And if it is what is val/sag like like plant?
