  1. Mine loves Xtreme Nano. I also feed a brine shrimp flake and their krill flakes. I also give them frozen baby brine shrimp, cyclops and daphnia. They eat it all.
  2. Thanks for the responses! I’ll make sure to try and push them in further next time. Also, I have to say Cory, you’ve gained a lifelong customer in me. I ordered the plants Wednesday and they were here in North Carolina before Friday afternoon. I’ll leave reviews for them once they settle in but they all looked great. Kudos to you and your staff for doing an amazing job!
  3. I added root tabs to my new 65 gallon tank yesterday and this morning most of them are sticking out of the gravel. I saw a thread that mentioned poking a hole in the tab so they don’t float. I’ll try that but my question is, should I replace the the ones that popped up with new ones? If it matters, I just received and planted the plants yesterday. It was some crypts, an Amazon sword, octopus and Val. Thanks!
  4. I got my new tank in the house finally! My plan is to have a big school of 1 kind of fish in the tank as well as a group of cories and a pair of dwarf cichlids too. I’ve always wanted to have emperor tetras but my wife likes diamond tetras better. What do you all think? Emperors or diamonds?? Im also thinking of about 30-35 or so. Does that sound like a good amount? Thanks!
  5. @Biotope Biologist it’s hard to tell if they’re swallowing anything because the food is so small. It’s a little Fluval 8 gallon tank. I think it’s 12”x12” or so. I don’t have live plants in it but there are a lot of fake ones for them to hide in. Maybe I’ll have to get some real plants. @Colu I do crush up the flakes until it’s almost dust. The baby brine is also really small. The same with the pellets I crush. I don’t think it’s going to get much smaller really. They don’t look overly skinny so I’m assuming they’re getting something from the food. I guess I’ll just keep doing what I am and hope they settle in and eat better. I was also thinking putting a few more in may help along with adding some plants. Thank you both for your suggestions.
  6. I have 4 Ember Tetras I got about 2 weeks ago. I actually got 6 but 2 were super tiny and didn’t make it. The ones I have left don’t seem like they’re eating. It looks like they want to but they eat the food then spit it back out. I’ve tried 3 different flakes, xtreme Nano pellets (that I crush even more because they’re too big), frozen daphnia and frozen baby brine shrimp. It’s the same with everything. They suck it in, maybe give it a chomp or 2 then spit it out. Any ideas? Thanks!

    Fallow tank?

Thanks for the advice Brandy. I don’t have any live plants in there. I added salt in yesterday along with the Pimafix. Maybe I’ll change out some water and just replace the salt. Should I continue feeding the tank a little to keep the cycle going or will it be fine for a couple weeks?

    Fallow tank?

I figured a new topic would be better than continuing in my first one. Long story short, I lost all the fish in my tank because I didn’t quarantine new fish I put in. What’s the recommendation now? Continue treating for the full course of the medication? It was a fungal infection and sadly PetsMart and Petco near me don’t carry fungal medications. All I had was Pimafix but I really kind of doubt it’s efficacy. Do I just continue feeding the tank a little to keep the cycle going while I’m waiting/treating the tank? Thanks for any help or advice!
  9. Well, as I feared, this disease killed my other fish as well. Always quarantine! My question now is, what’s the best course of action to follow? Do I finish the treatment course anyway to kill off whatever it may be? How long should I wait to add new fish? Do I just add a little food everyday to keep the cycle going until I add them?
  10. I feel like the best thing you can do right now is nothing. You’ve made a lot of changes between adding fish (and losing them), water changes and cleaning out the filter very quickly. Sometimes it’s just best to take a breath and let nature do what it knows how to do. Keep an eye on ammonia and feed lightly for a bit and in a week or maybe 2 I think things will have worked themselves out.
  11. I’ve always been a big fan of cories so I automatically assumed I’d have them but a couple upside down cats sounds interesting too. I’d have to look into it some more. I also just looked up the nanochromis and they’re beautiful. I hadn’t thought of a biotope but now you’ve got me thinking! Thanks!
  12. I was hoping for at least 12 (well, 13 since I always keep odd numbers) of the congos. I figured that left enough room for a nice sized Cory group and a pair of something else at the bottom. Rams or kribs most likely. I hadn’t thought of breeding. If it happens, it’ll probably just be a nice snack for everyone. What did you keep for algae control? Your tank sounds very similar to what I was thinking. Since I want to use sand I was planning on some Malaysian Trumpet Snails since they’ll eat the algae and help with cleaning up the sand. Thanks for your suggestions!
  13. It just so happens that sterbai are my favorite cories so that works for me! Thanks!
  14. Thanks for the ideas Bill! I wouldn’t have thought of keeping it that warm for the Rams. I’ve never had great luck with them and that may be the reason why. The bottom fish are the reason I’m considering using a sand bottom. I like the idea of the cories and apistos being able to sift through it. Not sure how it’ll work with the plants but we shall see!
  15. Just looking for critiques and maybe suggestions about the tank I’m planning. I’m considering a 75 or 90 gallon tank with a school of Congo Tetras. I’m thinking of having a sand substrate as well. I really want to have a nice group of Cory cats and a pair of Apistos and maybe also a pair of blue rams or kribensis. I’d like to do some low - medium light plants like an Amazon Sword, some Vals and some crypts. I’m also hoping to find a drilled tank and have a sump too. How many Congo Tetras would be good in a 75?
  16. Thanks for the suggestions James and Colu. I wanted to add some salt but haven’t because of the Cory cats. Now that they aren’t an issue I’ll definitely add some.
  17. I’ll go grab some tomorrow. I’ve had these 3 Rasbora for about 3 years now. I really hope they don’t die because I didn’t quarantine the new fish. The Cories and ottos were dead within a day or 2 so I hope these last long enough to be treated. Thanks for your help Taco!
  18. I got 3 Cory cats and 2 ottocinclus over the weekend. They were all dead this morning and now my Rasboras all have what they had. Of course I didn’t quarantine, lesson learned... Can anyone help me identify what this is so I can treat it? Thanks in advance for any help!
  19. Totally agree. They’re such an underrated fish. Maybe it’s their bigger size? I have a lot of plans, we’ll see how much I can actually get done though!
  20. Definitely looking forward to it as well! It was my older brother that got me in to fish keeping all those years ago. We lost him a couple years ago and the tank I want to build is for Congo Tetras which were his favorite fish. They also became my favorite fish because of him so I’m hoping I can do it justice!
  21. Hi! I am Jonathan (but everyone calls me howze) and I live in NC. I currently just have a little 8 gallon Fluval Nano tank but I’m starting to get the itch for a larger tank! I’ve been keeping or working with fish for at least 35 years or so. I’ve kept many different things over the years from community fresh water tanks to reef tanks and a lot in between. I especially love planted tanks though. It’s been at least 10 years since I’ve had one but I have the feeling it won’t be much longer! I’m looking forward to learning tons from the community here and maybe passing on a lesson or 2 I’ve learned over the years!
