  1. Check out dwarf sagittaria, it grew "tall-ish" when I had it in my 6gal aquarium (about same height as a 10). It can be taller or shorter depending on the lighting.
  2. you can also just pull chunks of it out/apart.
  3. So I am working on making a shrimp tank out of my "old" thrift-store-find Ascent tank. My plan was to use stuff I already had (after finding out that I have too much fish stuff) but the lights that were on the tank were not bright and the power adapter made a high pitched ringing, so I decided it had to go. To replace I decided on a 12" stingray because it was cheaper than a 16" (the tanks actual width) and since it was the same span as the original lights I figured the spread would be fine. I started by scraping off the paint and lights with a razor blade (cut my finger by not using a scraper handle). I then glued the stingray mounts to a scrap piece of polycarb panel (one to each) and used scrap screws to mount the light to the panel (may end up gluing them also). Overall it suits my needs and I am content. I used some scrap wood I had laying around along with some moss, java ferns, and a melon sword that way having a hard time competing against other swords in my 45. I noticed the light reflects off the angled top some but it is not visible from the lower level of me sitting at my desk. I also somewhat regret mixing crushed coral with my substrate, I did not think about how it would look. I don't like it but also don't hate it. Overall I am please with the setup and curious to see how the sword will do with the lighting. So far I have only bought a 12" stingray, catappa leaves, and crushed coral, for this tank. I will have to buy a new air pump because mine suddenly went out the other day... I guess I'll be ordering from the Co-op again soon.
  4. I feel like there has to be some kind of "...a penny a day" response nearby. On a serious note, it would be really neat to have some sort of large "slice of nature"/biotope tank in the house where you could try and mimic what it would be like in the wild. (reminds me of on of king of DIY's big tank projects)
  5. Great journal. I have been thinking about getting a Bolivian for my cooler water tank and this just sets the fire again.
  6. I know guppies and cherry shrimp are very popular. I have seen people do bristle nose and cherry shrimp also.
  7. I am very impressed by your tanks, they are quite lovely. If you want to dream about whiteclouds check out whiteclouddynasty on the forum, they have done quite a bit with them.
  8. I want to do shrimp for my next tank but every time I see this thread all I can think about is "dipping my toes" into puffer infested waters by trying pea puffers...
  9. You seem to have done your homework. The live plants will be helpful with filtering out some nitrates. Some people go by the "one gallon per fish" rule but that is not very accurate (example: 10 goldfish would not do well in 10 gallons vs. some breeders grow out 30+ angels in 10 gallons and do swimmingly). One idea is that "bigger tanks are always better" which is fare but not exactly scalable. "micro-fish" are exactly for the people who can't have big tanks. If you want that setup/stocking, go ahead and try it, it seems like you will be paying attention to make sure every one succeeds. You are already a step ahead by stocking pigmy cories instead of one of the bigger species. With the gourami eating the pigmy food you could also try feeding them at the same time (if you don't already) or scatter it around the tank more. Good luck and enjoy!
  10. On the green water side, how long do you have the light on? @modified lung
  11. Look into Polycarbonate Clear Multiwall Roof Pane. I have used this before for a lid. Relatively cheap. Congrats on the tank!
  12. If we are trying to feed with infusoria would squeezing out a dirty sponge help/be comparable?
  13. If you are looking for puffers and don't know already, go take a look at mountaintoppufferkeeper. Got some fun puffer stuff going on.
  14. Look into low light plants on the coop website (you can sort/search by low light plants only). Anubius plants and Crypt's are mostly low light. You can also fill in tall spaces with some wood to make up the vertical space and attach Anubius and/or java fern (also mosses i.e. Christmas moss).
  15. Check out the most recent blog post. There are some good recommendations for this kind of set up. I personally like crypts for rooted plants in a small tank and Anubis for rhizome plants. Both have different types that will fit more fore ground and more mid/background. https://www.aquariumcoop.com/blogs/aquarium/cookie-cutter-for-10-gallon-aquarium
  16. I suddenly had this thought (maybe some one had this already), I wondering if roots may end up growing into your uplift tube.
  17. Electronics usually don't like water, the light will want to stay dry. You can check out using "Polycarbonate Clear Multiwall Roof Panel" for tops. I have done this to keep fish from jumping, water in, and other things out. You should be able to find it at a box chain hardware store.
  18. No pressure (at least no great pressure) but I am fairly certain it has been 100 days since a bichir picture... Just saying. Also, how are the Limas doing?
  19. Same here, @H.K.Luterman pictures convinced me I needed one. Thanks for the pictures BTW. I live to far to buy fish from the Coop but it is sure fun to see and dream.
