  1. Has anyone tried replacing the rubber piece? Mine has cracked and failed (it has lived in a "pumphouse" outside in dry Colorado air for a year and a half) however the replacement pieces I see online do not have the vertical tab that the metal lever clamps on to. I am wondering if it would still function properly without the clamps working as a type of fulcrum.

  2. You may need to feed more. Watch and see how long it takes for the shrimp to finish off the pellets. Do the pellets last till you feed the next time or are they gone by 24hrs and the shrimp are having to wait 24hrs for another feeding.

  3. How many goldfish do you have in the tank? If you have multiple, have you noticed spawning activity? Is the fish in question female? I am pretty sure my goldfish lose some scales during spawning.

  4. Can you share more information? How long have they been running? Did you add the proper amount of salt to the water? What is the temperature of the water (colder water will take longer to hatch, too hot will kill).

Maybe try and explain your process from beginning to end to give us a better picture of what could be going wrong.

  5. One thing I have heard is selling low gets you in the door and if you have a good product and build a good relationship you can talk about a more favorable price for you. If it helps you could think about it from their possible perspective of some one coming in (maybe a customer maybe not) and wanting to sell fish to them. From their perspective they are taking a risk and have to invest time and space into a product they have no idea if it is worthwhile. I want to say @Fish Folk has built up a good relationship with their LFS...

I'm seriously considering hatching my own. I only have 2 tanks that would eat them though. I guess it's a 50/50 tradeoff. The upfront cost would be more to start. But after that I could just freeze the rest for later and make my own cubes. But for as often as I would go through them not sure it would be worth it. I feel like I would have a massive frozen brine shrimp supply that I would never get used up.

It is fun to watch the fish go after brine shrimp.

In my experience hair algae loves white light. Anyone else have this experience?

My recent foray into lighting would indicate that plants are not necessarily as able to best utilize white light (compared to true full spectrum) and it could mean the algae is able to better use the lighting and thusly the nutrients. Lighting optimization is quite the topic...

  8. My experience with a female betta is she murdered everything she could (in a 5gal, 10gal & 45gal) so based of that I don't recommend mixing bettas with other fish but other people have different experiences. Puffers can also be fin nippers/aggressive so...

If you try just be prepared to potentially move her back out if needed.

They have some "other shaped" containers used for dog food / dry storage that might be applicable. It's the similar style (almost identical) lid that you'd find on a 5G bucket that you can then screw on and has a rubber seal. There's a snap on lid, then that has threads for the screw on lid.

You could also do a husky bin and make a rectangular one. Another thing I wonder about is how to ensure complete flow through. Filters are designed with some kind of partition or such that ensure the water moves properly through all the media?
