  1. So, a weird thing just happened to me today. I have a 100 gallon Rubbermaid tank with 5 Platinum Medakas and 11 Gold White Cloud Mountain Minnows outside.. The Medakas usually stay near the top and I see them daily, I have several mops and have been collecting Medaka eggs and eggs have started hatching in small food storage containers indoors. I basically had no idea what was going on with the GWCMM because except for feeding they stay at the bottom of the pea soup which has developed and I rarely see them and I have been concentrating on the Medaka. A few days ago I put one of those Mesh Floating plastic frame fry tank into the tub in preparation for moving the Medaka fry out to it when they get big enough to put outside and won't be able to escape through the mesh, which is quite fine, but still big enough holes for newborn Medaka fry to get through. Today (remember I put NO EGGS NOR FRY in the mesh fry tank) the mesh fry tank has at least 8+ fry in it. So I am assuming the GWCMM are birthing genius fry who know to go into the fry tank and stay protected. The fry in the tank are black to dark grey. The Medaka fry I am hatching out indoors are transparent. The only answer is the GWCMM are making their way into the fry tank on their own through the fine mesh. And it implies there may be MANY more fry in the tub. I put a piece of hornwort and some Java moss in the tank with the fry.
  2. I have been collecting eggs for 5 days now, getting 4-10 per day for a total of about 37. I am starting to see eyes! I am quite sure they are Medaka eggs. Who knows what the WCMM are doing down at the bottom of the heavily planted pea soup tub? I get glances of them frequently but there could be 1000's of fry down there and I would never know.
  3. About a month ago I picked up 11 Goldfish from the feeder tank at Petco for my pond. I asked for Red and White (Sarasa type) and the 2 Apaches (red and black) that were in the tank, and was a bit disappointed in this nearly pure white one, but hey, they gave me 11 for the price of 10 ($2), so no complaints. I was growing them out some in an outdoor tub when I noticed this one has a triple-tail! Wakins are the genetic ancestors of all the fancy-double tail goldfish and is believed to have arose from a single mutation back in the 1596 when it was first mentioned in Chinese texts. But mine has only 3 lobes to the tail not 4 like a true double tail Wakin. https://www.nature.com/articles/ncomms4360 Has anyone seen this before? I have been researching, but only finding information about "Wakins" with a double tail. Now I don't want to put it in the pond (which is a huge natural pond with ~50 other goldfish) as I probably would never be able to recover it. Maybe I should Aquabid it? Does it have more value than the $0.18 I paid for it? For now it will stay in the tub outside my door.
  4. Yay! I have been finding them daily for 3 days now. 10 the first day then 4yesterday and 8 today!
  5. They were easy to pick out of the mop and dropped into the egg container easily. There were also a bunch of snail eggs which were way stickier. But I think you may be right because the eggs under magnification show no internal structure yet and Ricefish eggs are laid like that and develope eyes and other visible fry parts over a period of 1-2 weeks. But WCMM eggs hatch in 1-2 days so they must have visible fry in them when laid???
  6. The WCMM have been in there for about 4 months and the Medaka for ~1month. It has been pretty cold until a heat wave in the last few days. The bottom of the tub is full of plants in terracotta pots with pebbles that the WCMM live amongst so I hardly ever see them. And if the WCMM are dropping eggs in amongst the pebbles and pots I would never know. And I had a bunch of floating plants, but I realized a few days ago I would never find the eggs with the floating plants so I removed most of them and added the mops. I only have 5 Medaka but there appears to be 2 males and 3 females.
  7. I have 2 types of mops. There are 3 floaters consisting of scrubbie pads cut into strips floating from a section of pool noodle. The other is a large yarn mop which inhabits the mid to bottom of the tank. The WCMM stay almost exclusively at the bottom and the Medaka are in the mid to top of he tub. The eggs were found in the yarn mop, so I am thinking they are more likely WCMM. I am hoping the medaka will deposit there eggs in the floating mops. The eggs are very small <1mm and a light yellow color. I just removed about a dozen into a small food container to observe.
  8. OK, so I started a new topic, but will also post here. "So I have Platinum Medakas and Golden White Cloud Mountain Minnows and a spawning mop in a 100 gallon outdoor Rubbermaid tub. And there are eggs visible in the spawning mop. Any way to tell which eggs they are? How about if I separate them out and they hatch into fry? Can I tell them apart as fry? How old until they get big enough to tell apart? At what point will I be able to differentiate the species? Thank you for your input!" I have 2 types of mops. 10. Since they are already in separate tubs, I may just let them stay that way until I see at least some fry. Then at least I will know what fry they are, and which group is producing viable fry at what rate. And eventually maybe I'll put all the adults in one tub and use another to raise fry. It is just always easier to maintain one bigger tub rather than 2 smaller. Knowing me, I will have a dozen tubs by the end of summer.
  11. PS: Also what plants have you been most successful with while breeding WCMM or Medaka? I have most of the common ones.
  12. I have 11 Gold White Cloud Mountain Minnows that have been in an outdoor tub for several months. I bought 5 Platinum Medaka Rice Fish about 2 weeks ago that are in a separate outdoor tub. I would like to maximize breeding of both. Can I safely put both species in a single large heavily planted tub without worrying about increased predation of one species adults against the other's Fry? In other words, do the fish recognize the other species fry as "foreign" and are more likely to eat the other species fry than their own? I know both species are pretty good about not eating their own fry given enough food and cover. Neither have shown any signs of spawning yet. Any other hints for breeding these 2 species? Thanks for your input and experience.
  13. KatieG and Daniel, I live in the middle of nowhere, closest club would be over a 3 hour one-way drive away, but I might try Aquabid and/or eBay.
  14. One of my ponds is about 1/2 covered with what I have identified as Najas marina, or Spiny naiad, spiny water nymph. It is closely related to Guppy Grass. It thrives in extremely hard water. I have been using it in my tanks with Goldfish, White Cloud Mountain Minnows, Mollies and Guppies and they all seem to love it. It grows rooted in the pond but I just float it in the tanks. The fish nibble off the roots faster than it grows floating in the tanks, so I just put a new bunch in every week or so since I have an unlimited quantity available. Would there be a market for this plant? I have seen no sign of it in the aquarium trade.
  15. Will Sarasa comets breed true? In other words, Sarasa crossed with Sarasa will result in all Sarasa's? Or some solid silvers and golds? Thanks for your input!
