  1. test your tap water for phosphate too you can also look up marks shrimp tanks peroxide treatment but tread carefully because you can wipe out tanks if not measured properly
  2. i mean its a new tank so there will be an adjustment period till it finds that balance you can let the tank run cause if you're having an algae problem you def could have too many nutrients that the plant can absorb so the algae is going to thrive also it depends on what type of algae is it green, brown, etc ...me personally would stop giving extra nutrients and see how the plants react for a few weeks cause new tank syndrome is a real thing
  3. oh man ity was early 90s when pet stores were wild you could go in get a toucan and some guppies i was about 6 years old my family always had aquariums and it was time to get mine my uncle gave me a 10 gallon and an iron stand which 30 years later that fish tank stand is sitting right next to me right now so it was the 90s clown puke gravel was the cool thing to have every ceramic ornament was neon rainbow colored and your tank wasn't cool if it didn't have a mermaid and a bubbling treasure chest i ended up with multi color blue gravel and a neon rainbow skull which i also still have i had black skirt tetras neon colored glass tetra cause what kid didn't want those a kuhli loach a striped raphael cat and a pleco it def was an overstocked tank but i had that tank for years and it started a life long passion of fish keeping and i am grateful for that experience i am now 35 pretty much have had at least one tank since then currently running about 15 tanks of various size plus summer tubs heavily involved in multiple fish clubs too
  4. its all about balance i mean i've had planted tanks that went years with out a water changes only filled up when low but also have tanks i have to do water changes on weekly the smaller the tank usually the harder it is because things tend to go bad a lot faster so you have less time to notice an issue... as far as bettas and shrimp go it really depends on the fish some betta wont eat that many some will eat all of them but dont expect to breed lots of shrimp with a betta in the tank they will for sure pray on babies if you are new to aquariums id def get into the habit of doin water changes its good to get in the habit of it
  5. I've bred cpd and they lived on micro fauna in the tank various live foods and for sure crushed up fish food they are pretty resilient for being such small creatures more live food and variety the better cpd tend to be shy unless you have them with something else when they were in a 10 alone they kind of hid a lot in a group of eight i put my limia Isla in with them and boy are they bold and out n about now
