  1. Wouldn’t available surface area available for bacteria to grow need to be sufficient to support the tank? Not saying flow rate and oxygenation isn’t important. but wouldn’t surface area for the bacteria to grow be the first step? There is often talk about how new fish was added and the cycle was overwhelmed. Or how filter media is moved to jumpstart a new tank or instant cycle a new quarantine tank. I keep an overstocked fancy goldfish tank. So maximizing the filter capacity while minimizing real estate in the tank and time spent maintaining it would be important to me. I would like to know for example, if I can ditch a sponge filled HOB if I add one Ziss bubbler.
  2. I was wondering how I can compare filtering capacity across different types of filters. specifically, how does one Ziss bubbler compare to one air powered sponge filter or the same sponge filter powered by a power head. I read in some posts that one Ziss bubbler is equivalent to one large sponge filter. That doesn’t sound accurate to me. If true it would make Ziss bubbler less attractive option since it is larger and more expensive than a regular sponge filter. Based on what I read in aquariumscience.org chapter 7.1 fluidized K1 media has twice the surface area of a 30ppi sponge. I’m not sure if Ziss bubbler is equivalent to fluidized K1. But that ratio seems to make more sense. But I am still not sure how exactly this Ziss bubbler sold at aquarium coop compares to the sponge filters. I would like to feel confident when swapping out filters that I am not inadvertently shorting an aquarium. By the way I did calculate cubic inch of the sponge filters Large 61.8 Medium 36.7 Small 18.4 Nano 8.1
  3. Yes, I have taken the top half of the stacked sponge off to use in a quarantine tank when new fish arrive. It’s very convenient!
  4. I read polycarbonate was better than acrylic. This past weekend I cut some to put over my 29 gallon. I wanted to put the HOB on the side rims so I needed a new lid.
  5. Regarding the issue of real estate space in the tank. I agree sponge filters take up lots of room and not the most beautiful thing you can see. But since I have an overstocked goldfish tank I need all the extra filtration I can get on a budget. I wanted to stack the sponges since multiple stacked sponges takes up the same foot print as one.
  6. I was also wondering about this. I put a two and one half stacked sponge with an air stone as low as it will go. But I felt like maybe the whole length of the sponge was not getting used. So I set up another double stacked sponge with a power head on the other side of the aquarium. Based on the fact debris seems to collect at the bottom of the double stacked sponge with the power head, it must be doing something. But I am still not convinced the water is moving in through the full length of the sponge surface. I suppose I could test this with some swirling dye or something but I didn’t want to ruin a cycled sponge for an experiment.
  7. My daughter named the two danios we had “Sardine Brothers” since she couldn’t tell them apart. All of our goldfish get names. It gets really hard for me to remember them so my daughter writes them down on the front of the tank with glass pen. Pumpkin, Carrot, Gumdrop, Peppermint Bark (a calico Ryukin looks like peppermint candy dropped in dirt) Olive (the originally bronze fish turned orange now), Sherbet, Maraschino, Osenbei (pearlscale that looked like grilled rice crackers), and Ginger (oranda that’s supposed to be black and red but now turning all orange..
  8. Mine won’t even try anything I give them. Pellets, sliced cucumber, Rapashy. I worry they aren’t getting enough food. Since some of them have gone missing.
  9. My 11yr daughter the fish lover in your home wanted more fish. But I told her no, we already have 8 fancies in 55gallon plus 2bettas! Where are we going to put more fish and I don’t want to buy a new tank!! Undaunted, she put out and ad in our community message board by the mail boxes asking if people have unwanted or sick goldfish they want to rehome. Well we got a call and they had a barrel fountain with some commons and rosy red minnows. Now we are proud owners of an outside tub! Fortunately we live in FL and don’t get freezing temps. The fish seems to have already lived in the barrel more than a few years and seems hardy despite not much care. I suppose previous owners didn’t feed them much so they stayed small and healthy? Anyway, here is the set up.
  10. My aquarium is full of goldfish and I am always checking on nitrates and do weekly water changes. So I was wondering if this might reduce the frequency. If the stuff is alive, how does it stay alive in a sealed bottle? Does it have an expiration date? I was always skeptical of the aquarium bacteria sold in bottles.
  11. https://www.hydrospace.store/product-page/pns-probio Hello. I recently read about this product and wondered if anybody has used it. I was specifically looking for things that can lower nitrate levels is my goldfish tank. I understand feeding less and lower stocking and water changes. But I was looking for something else. ————————- from website ———— PNS ProBio™ contains a beneficial, naturally-occurring soil- and water-borne microbe. It is found in freshwater, marine and brackish environments (in the water column, the sediments and even in the guts of animals such as corals). This highly adaptive photosynthetic bacterium balances nutrient cycling in all types of agricultural systems. Though it performs a variety of ecological functions, it is most oustanding in its ability to remediate fouled water (even in oxygen-poor conditions) and digest complex organic compounds (e.g. cellulose and lignin). Additionally, it has the ability to fix nitrogen in critically nutrient-poor environments. Purple non-sulfur bacteria have for long been used successfully to remediate water quality in highly intensive aquaculture operations. They are increasingly being used to amend soils (particularly soils burnt by chemical fertilizers) in horticultural applications. Their probiotic qualities serve to suppress disease in numerous cultured species. In addition to helping to maintain an ecologically stable microhabitat, PNS ProBio™ provides a wholesome live food source for zooplankton as well as soil mesofauna. Additionally, it is known to form direct, beneficial associations with the root systems of both terrestrial and aquatic plants.
  12. I decided to try using a power head for the new ginormous sponge filter I received from Aquarium Coop today. I am hoping it might work better than an airstone. I would appreciate any advice.
  13. Hello. I started keeping goldfish in March. My daughter 10 wanted a goldfish for a long time. After schools closed I told her I would buy her what she needed to get her goldfish if she wrote a proposal on goldfish keeping and pricing on everything we need to buy. It took her a few weeks but she completed the research. I ordered everything we needed and she decided she wanted a butterfly telescope. We ordered online and asked for one that is white as possible and “with a big personality”. Few weeks later a box labeled “live fish” arrived. It contained a plakat betta and four ottos! (Of course I didn’t know what they were and I had frantically work to identify them). I called the online company and they agreed to send us the goldfish. We put the betta in the 10 gallon we had prepared for the goldfish. Now I had to figure out where to put the goldfish that will arrive. After much discussion and advice from a goldfish group I decided that since we already had a betta fish, I will get a divider for the 10 gallon and put the two bettas in there. I worked on getting a new tank off of FB and located a 29 gallon with all accessories. Next day we spent the day setting up the new tank. At the end of the day we noticed a box in front of our back door! Life Fish! Our goldfish arrived! The company had said it would probably be next week before they ship, but never mind! We welcomed our new telescope. A week passed and the new fish settled in nicely and betta fish had their divider. Then another fish arrived! Another telescope! So order for one telescope resulted in three fish plus 4 ottos! Over the next few months my daughter and I loved our goldfish and betta friends and learned about fish keeping. We added a little ranchu to the family in July. Then much to our surprise a new box with “Live Fish” arrived in our mailbox! Inside was a bronze telescope with a delta tail! Apparently the company’s order system has a glitch and reprocessed our order. By this time I was fully engrossed in goldfish keeping. They are so adorable and they have such silly personalities! My daughter and I just ordered four new fish (different company this time) and got a 55 gallon yesterday! Our fishy journey continues!
