  1. looks like the start of fin rot. dose some salt.
  2. the bypass valve will be on the softeners head, so it will bypass everything. as for the hot water, you would have to run out all the water from the water heater, that would be nuts, but the rest of your pipes just run it for a minute or two.
  3. those are mollies, every day of the week, and twice on sunday! not even questionable.
  4. left yer lens cap on. idk! 🙈
  5. nothing but clouds yesterday, but i did see the one in 1977! back then we had a sheet of paper with a pencil hole to look through.
  6. you have in addition to the gravel, bacteria on the glass, on the plants, in/on the filter, and on any decorations you are keeping. for the 2 goldies i see, you will be fine.
  7. its a lot of work to maintain a strain really well, but i dont think you need 8-10 tanks. a few tanks yes, because over time you will want to cross them back against each other .
  8. your water should probably be blue after dosing, so cloudy wouldnt surprise me. anything you can do to a tank can kill off bacteria, and you may have knocked down the level some. i highly doubt you killed 'em all off, so give it a few days while monitoring the tank. id almost guarantee in a few days it will come back around.
  9. space alien eggs. no good!😲
  10. as long as the tank isnt way too warm, it should be fine. as mentioned sometimes cory's just like to break the surface.
  11. shrimp would be your last thing to add. they need a very well established aquarium as they really exist on biofilm.
  12. id start with 6. you can add more in a week or two if things continue to go well.
  13. swapping calcium etc with sodium is changing the salinity. it is trace amounts, part per million. you would taste it in your drinking water long before it was ever enough salt to affect fish or plants. lifelong water softener user, plus i add salt on top of it.
  14. i am going to suggest you try it before you panic. way too much is made of the trace amounts of salt involved.
  15. i am no snail expert, but have a few different nerites, and i do not believe that to be a nerite snail.
  16. if none of the other fish show any odd signs, id write it off as a weak fish.
  17. you put in a seeded sponge filter so you now have an established bacteria colony. that is all "cycling" an aquarium is, nothing more than establishing a bacteria colony. slowly add fish, and monitor the water quality as you slowly stock up the tank. dont make it more complicated than it needs to be.
  18. it may not be your birthday today, but its Angus Young's!
