I see your replies. Please do not quote me. I keep wet houseplants, sometimes with aquatic friends. -
Dirted Tank - Best Advice, Resources, etc?

You can choose to build a scape, an ecosystem, a display tank, or a breeding facility. Lots of choices! -
Dirted Tank - Best Advice, Resources, etc?
Streetwise replied to Miranda Marie's topic in Plants, Algae, and Fertilizers
I run organic soil tanks. I have tried a variety of things over the years. I should probably start a new thread. The most basic formula is one inch of organic topsoil, capped with one inch of 2-4 mm gravel. I have used and removed sand. It is not conducive to plant growth. -
It has been many years since I read the books, but they did make some changes. Author Hugh Howey was involved in much of the production. The first season of Silo covers about 2/3 of the first book (Wool).

short water height for ACO nano sponge
Streetwise replied to HelplessNewbie's topic in General Discussion
FYI, the Small is shorter and wider than the Nano, and fits in my 3.5 gallon aquariums without the tube. -
@Chick-In-Of-TheSea, that looks like an error from Cloudfront, which must be part of the hosting ecosystem for Invision Community. I see a notice from today, but it appears to be resolved. https://health.aws.amazon.com/health/status Service Amazon CloudFront Severity Resolved RSS Elevated Error Rates Jul 18 10:26 AM PDT Between 9:37 AM and 10:13 AM PDT, we experienced elevated error rates for request serviced by the CloudFront Origin Shield and Regional Edge Cache in the US-EAST-1 region. The issue has been resolved and service is operating normally.

I switched back to the newest theme yesterday after another forum update. I think Invision Community fixed whatever was going on.

We are having an issue with the theme. I have temporarily reverted to the previous C.A.R.E. theme, which does show images.

If messages from the forum are going to spam, that would be on your end, or your email host. Try adding the forum email to your contact list, or see if you can mark the messages as not spam. Sometimes spam detection can be aggressive if you get a lot of messages from the same source.

PMs could be used to game the reactions. This is probably why the forum defaults are as they are.

Is mulm beneficial?
Streetwise replied to Jacob Hill-Legion Aquatics's topic in Plants, Algae, and Fertilizers
Mulm is a general description for anything that accumulates on the substrate, or rejoins the substrate. It is often decomposing biological matter. My tanks enjoy it! -
Looking good!

Lake Tahoe’s best clarity in 40 years is the work of this ‘natural cleanup crew’ https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/apr/11/lake-tahoe-clarity-visbility-zooplankton Partial quote: The dramatic change can be attributed to an uptick in the concentration of zooplankton, tiny critters that are specialized to consume particles that inhibit the lake’s visibility and an unexpected depletion in the numbers of Mysis shrimp that normally would eat those zooplankton. According to Schladow, the zooplankton, especially the Daphnia and Bosmina species, “largely disappeared from the lake after they were grazed down following the introduction of the Mysis shrimp in the 1960s”.

what dirt for dirted tank?
Streetwise replied to Jacob Hill-Legion Aquatics's topic in Plants, Algae, and Fertilizers
I get most of my topsoil from a local compost company. I just use my hands to sort out any larger pieces. I don’t mind some wood bits in my substrate. I prefer a gravel cap.- 13 replies

"Meet the fantastically colorful and astonishingly adaptable sea slugs that found a way to photosynthesize (or create energy from sunlight) like plants. Diving deep into these often overlooked creatures, invertebrate zoologist Michael Middlebrooks introduces the solar-powered slugs that lost their shells -- but gained the ability to directly harness the power of the sun."

You might see tannins from the soil in a new tank, but it will still be from plant matter decomposition. Mopani wood is a nice source of tannins, and a food supply for algae and biofilm grazers.
