  1. Sorry to revive a dead post but this popped up when I was trying to see pothos vs potato information and I figured I should update this. the monstera definitely won, by a mile, the pothos is growing very strong and is as thick in the stem as my finger, but the monstera is fruiting, has 32 inch leaves (no sunlight) and has roots that span 6 feet by 3 feet, definitely the winner for large tanks but I would not recommend it for anything shy of 200+ gallons just because the roots will take over you tank, I can add way more photos if there is interest, there is very heavy plant load in this tank with the monstera but even when jam packed with goldfish the plants keep nitrates to basically 0, it got so strong I had to add close to 30 pounds of crushed coral just to keep the KH from crashing and it’s really done amazing keeping the water “clean”.
  2. Ammonia usually can be smelled, does your tank smell like dirt or does it have a foul odor? like colu said swim bladder can be caused by many things. what type of food are you feeding and is this a Thai goldfish?
  3. Deep but not deep enough, it’s sand so likely 1.5 to 2 inches max I tried to get it deeper but the tank is 6 feet by 3 feet so that’s a lot of sand
  4. The measurements are below, my tank is 25 inches tall so I need about that, I like the spout like feature so I want it to be at least half an inch above the water level, the pvc gives me more customization, I was thinking about in half the tanks making air powered hang on backs with them, I’m not married to pvc but I’m worried the parts that come with it aren’t tall enough.
  5. Hello all! Been extremely eagerly awaiting coops new airlift attachment, does anyone know if it will attach to a pvc pipe? Unfortunately the measurements online have the lift pipes that come with it too short by just a few inches, before I order 13-15 of these I wanted to make sure I could customize it to be the height I need, thanks for the help!
  6. Finrot with blackening fins is classic ammonia burn. Other symptoms also match ammonia same with the cloudy water, I would keep up with what has already been suggested here and reduce feeding as suggested while you let your cycle catch up, if you have any plants to add that would be great.
  7. Duckweed does not like surface agitation so that will severely limit its growth, also when there is a lot of competition for nutrients it also will grow slow, I keep goldfish so I have never had a tank get infected with duckweed haha, similar to your silver dollars it just won’t happen, if you kept a tub pond in full sun without a filter and no other plants you would see it grow insanely fast, but if that tub was full of silver dollars or goldfish it may never take over but it certainly won’t disappear until it gets colder and it slows down, then it disappears cause it can’t grow faster than it’s being eaten.
  8. Likely I would assume that they were grown in a very humid high light area that is wet, those cups also have a lot of soil so it could be harder on the roots if it’s not giving a lot of oxygen to the roots, there are a lot of factors going on although I’m not an expert with aquarium plants, I am very good at growing different types of “house plants” out of the tops of the aquarium though
  9. To cute the gh down you can use distilled water but I’d normally strongly recommend this because while your gh is high something else may be low and adding distilled can lead to a deficiency somewhere you not testing for, are the fish distressed in the high gh and does your tap match the tank gh?
  10. When was the last time you tested the tank? Did you add in anything new or do any work near the tank like drilling a plaster wall? did you add any concrete? if it’s been a long time since the last test it could be old tank syndrome type deal just gradual overtime or maybe the drought in your area could have left the water your adding in harder then normal
  11. what is your ph level? This is likely bacterial, your goldfish also has the early stages of finrot, the melafix likely knocked it back but does not always eliminate it. Has your fish improved with the other treatments? If not I’d recommend aquarium salt if you don’t have plants, if you have plants you can do a salt bath dip.
  12. I keep goldfish outside in tubs in new jersey, goldfish really do not have any issue with high temps, they have issues with low oxygen which can happen with warm water since it does not hold oxygen as well as cold water. This summer has been intense and some of my tubs topped out at 95F for days on end without issue. these fish were also bred by me in a cold basement, usually never warmer than 70 in the summer and as cold as 43 in the winter. for the ich, you can crank the heat but i woulsnt recommend having the heater in there long term. if you just keep the water clean and the salt that should be more than enough to knock them out, usually goldfish can shake off ich very well compared to other fish since their slimecoat is so thick, usually ich appears as a secondary condition with goldfish
  13. Thanks for the recommendations, I have been looking to find some to my area, I found a few house plant ones I like but another recommendation to throw out because it’s aquarium related is plant life project YouTube, he grows a ton of different plants riparium style, I am trying to do something similar but with gardening type plants, tomato’s, peppers and a mulberry tree
  14. They will eat the baby snails except for baby Malaysian trumpets unless they are very small. Pond bladder and rams will be eaten, some usually still make it to adulthood though so you can remove them by hand but I dunno why you would. I keep snails in every tank always, they are the best
  15. My biggest regret is setting up some of the tanks without deep substrates, the longer I’m in the hobby the more I realize I like the benefits of a thick layer of substrate. I flip flop back and forth on if I like sand or gravel more, although for me I’m pretty sure sand is the best.
  16. Since it’s a 10 gallon, is just lower the water level to the lowest level you can to still cover the plants, it should be fine and I wouldn’t uproot everything
  17. Absolutely! Goldfish are social they will be happy together 🙂
  18. If you want to avoid medication, I have heard an old wives tail that pond snails eat hydra. (Not bladder snails, specifically pond snails). I havent personally confirmed it, because I have never had hydra, between the snails I have and the goldfish, I just they cant get a foothold.
  19. Normal ramshorns will only eat decaying plants. However do you a photo of your ramshorn? is it big? the Columbian Ramshorn is a different story, I have one and they are so cool, but they do eat plants. but only minorly, I have noticed a real difference in my plant load with him in my 29g planted tank.
  20. Hello Fellow Summer Tubber, I also cant wait, I left one 110 gallon tub up year round as an experiment (zone 6) but I am about to set up my many other tubs, I can't wait to get my fancy goldfish outside, Your Beckett 35 gallon tub is one of my favorite especially for beginners reading this. They are sold at home depot for 29 dollars brand new, fantastic item I have loads of them. I hope to get more into Lillies and Lotus this year, I only added them to one of my tubs last year and it was beautiful, I also got some Iris, Pickerel and another plant I forgot the name of to try this year outside as well in addition to my lillies and lotus. I am also going to try some bog type plants that I expect will be stunning to view. Good Luck! feel free to PM me if you want anyone to send photos to throughout the season to nerd out over, I can return a bunch if you want!
  21. Hello! I think some photos would be helpful, also is your tank acrylic or glass? I know that acrylic tanks can warp if the entire base is not supported, I know imaginarium (or think) makes acrylic tanks so the stand should be fine for that I would assume. I have been experimenting with electricityless tank set ups so if you think thats helpful for you I can send you photos and details in a PM to what I have done in my office, its a 20 gallon tank with 0 electricity low water usage and its been a massive success so far, its my own spin on the walstad method. Anyway back to the tank. I think the location being somewhere you can enjoy it is the most important. my first tank was in my bedroom because I was the one interested in fish, my dad would come into my room all the time to gaze at it and eventually I was able to get a really large tank for our living room/kitchen. If other family members are also interested in it, I would set it up whereever you both spend the most time. You can always run a really long extension to get power if you needed for that prime location.
  22. Wow! I would say a goldfish, it looks like a goldfish with everything except the color. I am not sure if its the camera playing tricks but I have never seen a green like that on a goldfish, I have seen an olive like color before but this is greener then that. Very unique goldfish you got there! can't wait to see it in 1 year when it gets fat and happy! Do any have double tails? or are they single tails? Goldfish are able to hybridize with certain fish. It is possible you have that going on which would make this even cooler, although for now I would just say they are normal goldfish hitch hikers.
  23. If you live in the united states and get municipal water, this time of year they do flushing and they add a lot of chemicals in (usually just super doses of chlorine or chloramine) which sometimes require more than the labeled amount of prime. Sorry for the loss of your fish, I have chloramines which are a nasty thing, I never do water changes after large storms or during flushing anymore just to be safe, but triple dosing prime works great for the chloramines. However, you said your ammonia test was 0 which rules out chloramines, it would have had to of likely been chrorine if it was something in the water which is less likely since you did add prime. Stray current maybe? forgot to unplug the heater before the water change and broke it?
  24. Sorry @Huihui and @Colu! Finals in school been so busy https://www.yourfishstuff.com/collections/flakes I am a big fan of your fish stuff foods, really good quality, low temperature small batch at a very affordable price. Steep discounts on bulk food, I like getting a variety of flakes and mixing them together, but the goldfish flakes, earthworm flakes and veggievore and spiralina flakes are good.
  25. I would cut out the sinking pellets for a while, maybe also the blood worms. try to feed a high quality flake lower in protein to see if that may help. Pellets, especially sinking pellets, can be hard for goldfish to digest, since your oranda appears to have a high peduncle in ratio to his head, he could be more sensitive to swim bladder issues internally. His dorsal fin could be discolored because it’s often rubbing on the top or at the surface. Also I know you previously mentioned no ammonia, but if your able to double check, those bubbles at the top in your second photo can sometimes happen with ammonia, or many other things. sitting at the top is also a sign of high ammonia, although usually goldfish will develop black marks in the fins with ammonia which yours has not, so my first recommendation remains to stop the sinking pellets for a little, at least 10 days to see if things improve.
