I do. I use a flat tooth pick and just add a small amount because a little goes a long way. I breed several kinds of fish and fry should be fed 3-4 times a day if you can. I mix my foods live and repashy powder, but unless you are planning on breeding more I would not worry about the live foods. I have used ground up flakes in emergency situation. I have a fish coffee grinder that I have just for fish use.

Awesome, thank you! I definitely will feed at least 3 times a day. I work from home and can easily manage that.

Congratulations!  I just removed my CPD breeders from a tank and had the same issue. I use a fine sponge prefilter or pantyhose over a siphon hose to do tiny fry tank water changes. I zip tie the sponge to the hose.

Oh thanks! I forgot about covering the end of the hose!

Given the opportunity, most fish will spawn like crazy. We don't always know it because fish eggs and fry are a great and highly sought after fish food. You managed to time it so you removed the parents before they could eat the eggs/fry and now you have a gazillion (give or take a few) fry. In perfect circumstances with 100% survival, we'd all be up to our eyeballs in fish. A big koi (20+ pounds) can lay over a million eggs at a time. Luckily, it's a fish-eat-fish world out there so the numbers stay under control. Well, it's an everything eats fish world out there and it's good that it is. The numbers can get scary when you think of what happens when every egg or fry survives.

And coral spawns are staggering in the number of eggs released. Hundreds of millions are common on a moderately sized reef. Most get eaten by plankton eaters/filter feeders, but the numbers that get released are staggering.

Yeah I was just NOT expecting this at all, it was such a shock to find; this is the most baby fish I have ever seen in my life, lol! I know not all are likely to make it, but I'm going to see if I can raise a few up to add to the school in the 75. I'm used to just raising guppies and endlers in tanks that are well established and basically just feed the fry for me, not something like this kind of setup, so I'm nervous about how much to feed and whatnot (but I started monitoring the water params). If I'm over flowing with babies, I guess I'll have to get a large bin for them and sell them on Craigslist or something!

  4. Ok. These are baby fish, right? I feel like I'm going crazy. I had a group of giant danios (and 2 random pearl danios) in this bin quarantining for a few weeks. I removed them and put them in their tanks about a week ago? Maybe? I kept a few snails in to keep the cycle going, and have been feeding them every few days.

Well, I opened the bin this evening to throw some food in there... and I discovered this:

The only fish that have been in there are the danios, and I have done 0 maintenance on this tank since I removed them! I don't have any sort of fry food so I put some Repashy Community Plus power in, and also a big wad of java fern. I'm afraid to even change the water, they're so tiny!

My hubby thinks they're bugs. I'm not crazy, right? 😄

  5. Well, we had our board game night and by the time everyone left, all of my aquarium lights were out. So me, being me, thought that would be a great time to turn Pooka's light on, with the room being so dark, and get some nice video of her.

But of course, she was HIGHLY SUSPICIOUS of my shenanigans, as it was outside of our usual routine, and so she mostly stayed in her cave. After a long while of quiet sitting and patience (and some Repashy) she did come out a little and did her usual face mush against the glass, looking for me. I do want to get some longer video of her swimming around, but for now, this will do for a Pooka update!

I'm sorry to hear you've been having a rough time...

Someone wanted to come and say hello to Pooka (and you, of course!) His name is Big Bad Tyrone and he's absolutely gorgeous 😍  I wouldn't have him if it wasn't for your posts, so thank you. He's a lot of fun already. I'm trying to get him to come to me for food, but he won't yet. Its only been a week though.

He is without doubt the boss of the tank. The first pic it their first meeting, they all grouped up to check him out. He just took over the best cave and the previous tank boss, the dark blue and black mbuna just had to suck it up. Sometimes he gets a bit mad, but never at Tyrone.

And there he is giving you his best smile!

He's gorgeous! What a big, handsome boy! I'm so glad you're enjoying him

Things have settled down here and Pooka's all healed up and back to her usual self. I got her some Repashy "Bottom Scratcher" and she loves it! I should takes some photos and do an update soon, I've just been busy with gaming and work!

  7. Hey. I know it's been a long time since I've posted here. To sum up everything, I lost my limia colony. It put me in such a funk that I just don't even want to talk about it, so I guess I've been avoiding doing so.

But everyone else is doing ok. I let a few egg clutches slip through the cracks and so I'm currently swimming in baby mystery snails. Murder Bean is having a never ending buffet.

I noticed Pooka was acting... not herself. She was spending a lot of time upside down at the surface - and while she IS an upside down catfish, her not being in her usual spot at her cave is weird. At first I wondered if she was gulping air, and so I gave her a bubble wall. Her species is found in rivers and so I thought maybe she wanted more flow. She likes to play in the bubbles, but it didn't stop her from sleeping at the surface. Water params are excellent. Her tank never has nitrates, I have to fertilize for the plants, but I've been doing more water changes out of paranoia.

I then noticed, one morning, that her dorsal and adipose fin (the round fin behind her dorsal) looked damaged. I had seen similar damage to her side from sitting on her heater, and had since made a cage so she can't come in contact with it, and that fixed the problem. The platies certainly can't cause any harm to her, and so my thoughts turned to Scruffy, the bristlenose. Bristlenoses have been known to attack slow moving fish over territory, and he did love her cave. I decided that was the most likely answer - Scruffy was munching on her to get her to move out of his favorite spot, and so she had started sleeping out in the open.

So I tore her tank apart to remove the trouble maker. I decided it would make interesting content if I wanted to make a journal post, so I took pics.

Here he is, in the naughty boy bucket.

I had to tear her tank up to catch him.

But I took the opportunity to make her cave even bigger, and remove the driftwood so she has even more space.

Here her tank is after the make over, the next night. She started immediately sitting in her favorite spot again.

Here is the damage to her fins. This is after the really chewed up parts fell off. The edges seem clean, and I'm hoping they will grow back fine. The white spot on her adipose fin seems to be getting smaller.

Scruffy seems to be adapting to the 29 well. Tesla seems fine with his new tank mate.

@H.K.Luterman where do you get your fish??? Just curious since we are both in Madison, wondering if you order or purchase yours locally.

I have bought fish locally. I got my featherfin catfish (labeled as a lace catfish) several years ago from Pet Supplies Plus in Madison (best $8 I ever spent). Never had any health issues with her. However, I did buy a fish from them who ended up dying of epistylis, so just be careful; make sure to thoroughly look at anything before buying. For the most part everything there looks healthy when I take a peek.  Not sure when they restock, I went last Tues and their tanks were full of fish.

Edit: Oh, and beware; their plant tanks have duckweed! (I like duckweed but you may not)

I got my blood parrot from the Madison Petco. Absolutely no health issues, and she's more than a year old. I also tend to buy bettas there too. They restock either Wednesday or Thurs.

And I got my albino senegal bichir from the Huntsville Petco, and no issues as well for more than a year. This Petco seems to have more diversity in stock, but just be very careful to thoroughly look over their tanks before buying. I've seen sick fish, and their tanks are all connected; if one is sick, they all have probably been exposed. I think they restock on Thurs.

My ctenopoma and my pea puffer both came from the best store in town, which sadly closed about 4 years ago; The Aquarium Shop in Huntsville. I miss them.

If I want something really specific, like high end shrimp or an uncommon type of live bearer, I order online.

I should mention Aquatic Cove; they seem great if you're into salt water, but the last time I went in (about 2 years ago) a lot of their freshwater tanks were sick (and a figure 8 puffer was completely dead and fungused). Maybe they've improved, I don't know, but definitely be cautious. I have bought plants from them though with no problem, and a lot of my driftwood came from them.

  9. An update!

BABIES. So many babies and even more on the way. The two boys from the first batch are reaching maturity and gaining their colors, and so are also being just as pesky as the adult male. Their colors aren't the same as the adult, but maybe it just takes time for them to develop. Anyways, I took some video of the poor heavily pregnant females being harassed.

The tank is doing well. I see a shrimp now and then but they haven't started breeding.

  10. I'm sorry you've had some trouble! Corydoras can be sensitive to meds, and shipping is very stressful; it could have just been all too much for the little guy. But every bad experience is still experience, and this is how you learn what works best. We've all been there. 🙂

  11. I agree with everything @Beardedbillygoat1975 has said! Just a warning though... basically anything you add to that tank is going to have to be a "wait and see" if things work out. Have a backup plan. My blood parrot is very aggressive, and bites me hard enough to draw blood sometimes (and she has the weird mouth). She does ok with my senegal bichirs and ctenopoma, although she's very bossy and pushes them around, but she constantly went after my electric blue acara. I had to move him out to another tank.
