  1. Hi guys, I can’t seem to decide what to add to my tank looking for something that will do a little maintenance. I have a 70 litre display tank that has 11 medaka rice fish and 1 - 6 month old Bristlenose (sex unknown). They have some plants, moss balls and structure . I am torn between a the otocinclus a group of 5 maybe - a new species for me . Or another bristlenose pleco (maybe a super red or long fin ) but I was tempted to wait until my current BN is older so I can get a mate (I have other tanks if needed to move around ) . Or maybe even a few cherry shrimp ? I was thinking of maybe adding a 2/3 of my male fancy guppies in the future. So not looking to over stock the tank yet . ideas and suggestions welcome
  2. Thank you for the suggestions . I actually keep my daisy rice fish at 25c. 23 is the lowest as they prefer warmer temperatures than the medaka . Many thanks
  3. Hey guys, I have a 37 liter tank that’s in my living room prime place . It currently has my group of 5 daisy rice fish in . I will later wanting to add some new additions to the tank . I really like how my other rice fish breed so I would to stock with something that I can breed . I was think some bottom dwellers maybe Corydoras . I was also thinking maybe a trio of guppies But I am interested to hear what other people would add to the tank . Many thanks
  4. Hi guys, So I have made set up a large tank as I wanted to show the different colours of the rice fish (I have been breeding some but wanted a show tank of sorts to show the different colours). Anyways a local fish shop told me they had a colour I was looking for so I brought a group . They also had the daisy blue I asked if they would breed with the current species . I was told it wasn’t possible. I purchased a group to add to the rice fish community . They are currently in quarantine but reading up it’s a mixed bag of if they can breed hybrid’s . Has anyone kept both together? Should I add the daisy blues to the community tank or leave them separate? They look stunning mixed with the other but I don’t want to risk having hybrids I can’t get rid of ?
  5. Thanks for everyone’s advice. I have the tank a good clean as think I missed a few hidden algae spots. I have added in more rocks to increase SA . I have reduced the amount of floating plants as I think when they were going brown this may be adding to the problem …. So I will be more careful to pick out the dying plant matter . I have also added in a filter boost bacteria . Hopefully this along with 5 fish in a 54 liter tank will help .
  6. Hi Guys, I have a breeding tank which regularly has ammonia spikes despite recent and regular water changes . It’s 54 litres and has 5 nano fish in so isn’t over stocked. The tank is bare bottom with a few rocks in the centre. It has some fake floating plants , a spawning mop and some really floating plants. This group was a group of 7 but I have lost two due to ammonia spikes . The filter should be more than effective for the number of fish it’s massive. The fish are still breeding so must be happy enough with the water conditions. Is it due to being a bare bottom tank ? I am thinking of completely emptying this weekend and cleaning everything then re filling ? any ideas ?
  7. Hi Guys, So I have hatched some fry only issue is first batch only 1 survived which is almost 3 weeks old ! But daily I am getting newly hatched fry . As the one 3 week old is much larger and more developed than the hatchlings . I put the one in a breeder box in the fry tank as I was concerned it may eat the new hatchlings . As that one is too large to get out the holes. However the hatchlings keep getting in the breeder box . I remove them and they go back in. It’s a 10 gallon with some fake plastic plants and some duck weed with a few rocks . See photo . the largest fry is approx 6 mm and hatchlings are 1mm . Is it best to let the big one into the fry tank then the hatchlings can go in the breeder box to escape or will the big one eat them anyways . many thanks
  8. Hi, Looking for some advice, I have a small pleco who is currently in quarantine after his 3 tanks mates died 10 day after being brought . The 3 were large and hogged the food I am unsure why but they were fine one morning and by the evening they were floating up right . I did by a new bog wood and some new food so it could have been either . I removed the one survived into an empty fry tank . But left the plants and snails in the tank where the fish died . They seem fine but I don’t want to put the pleco in incase it was an illness that killed the plecos. I was hoping to put him a tank with my breeding fish he should be fine with them . How long after his tank mates dying should I wait he seems healthy and eating. My issue is the fry are out growing the fry boxes they are in and will need to moved in the next week . I don’t really want to have to set another tank up at the moment but don’t want to risk if it’s an illness the rest died from . many thanks
  9. Hi , So after speeding time re-doing my pond as it was becoming impossible to maintain . I wondered what people wish they had done differently when building a pond or tank . I have a pond in a sun room originally had some rice fish which are now inside to breed . It’s was growing a lot of algea that I couldn’t keep on top off so brought a few Britslenose Plecos . Weeks later still no improvement in the algea . I have tried increasing water changes and using barley straw . yesterday I re-scapped it to make the base easier to clean . Originally the base was half gravel, then rocks, two large oxygenating plants, lots of floating plants, a log for structure and two plant pots for hides. I have cut back on the plants just one large oxygenator and no floating plants, I have removed the gravel but kept the log, plant pots and rocks. I am hoping this will stop the high algea growth mainly as it’s easier to clean and biomaterial in the pond . If it stays manageable I will add a few floating plants in again . I am making a new pond and was wondering what people find works well or doesn’t . More to stop algea growth ! many thanks
  10. Hi guys, thanks for the advice , I did some moving around of fish and decided to put the group in a tank with a heater . Mainly was thinking I could see females carrying eggs . They have been spawning well increasing in numbers by the day . Which is great . But I have seen they lay the eggs late afternoon!
  11. Hi , I am just wondering if you can over feed live foods ? Normally when we go away fish get feed by a relation . However, we are going away with the relation for 5days . My issues is all the house fish will be fine but the person who’s doing them is older and can’t get to the “patio ponds “ in the sunroom as it has loads of steps at the far end of the garden . My larger pond will be okay they have a timer feeding thing. However my smaller pond with a breeding colony would get over feed by the automatic system. They can nibble on algae but I was thinking when I put daphnia in they some hids in plants you can see them the day after feeding . Could I add a load in before I go so they have live food whilst I am away ?
  12. I only check for eggs in a morning. I tend to feed at the opposite end of the tub so I can check whilst they are distracted . They are in direct sunlight which they seem to really like but there’s a lot of plant cover and a few pots to hid in . I when in the afternoon (1pm) yesterday (normally early morning 7am , 4pm and 8pm) . Went in saw the female carrying a massive bunch of eggs . Went back an hour later they had gone I managed to get two off a spawning mop but she defo had more . I think that’s I have been checking too early or late and they are eating the eggs . Which is annoying as they eat loads . Maybe will try putting live daphnia in as it will live a few days then the snack bar is open all the time . Thank I think I will order some more of the other colour as they are breeding I just need to stop them being eaten , I think
  13. Thanks they have lots of water spangles that float covering 1/5 of the surface, a few bits of horwort (think that’s what it’s called ) than some larger potted plants that give cover . I saw a female with loads of eggs yesterday afternoon , although an hour later she had non and could only find two eggs on the spawning mops (fingers crossed they hatch ) . Maybe i have been looking at the wrong time as i thought they laid eggs in the morning ? Maybe more plants is need thanks
  14. Lowest temperature is 50°F - normally maintains around 60F
