  1. Excellent video thanks very much for the link, I'll have to consider further but I think I'll either go with this updated version with the weir or maybe explore building some acrylic tanks that I'll be able to drill.
  2. Hey John, I'm actually not sure sorry, I haven't really retained any plant names apart from Anubias at this point. It was recommended by my LFS instead of duckweed for a floating plant and it certainly grows well, I've got aquasoil in the tank but I'm not dosing any fertilisers, it was actually a cutting from my 50L community tank when setting up the Betta tank.
  3. This is fairly topical for me at the moment actually, I'm super new to the hobby but I've just had to pull a plakat out of my community tank. I was actually sold 2 "females", the other female is doing fine and is quite peaceful but this one has been quite aggressive, chasing some of the fish around etc. and while we've never seen the deed have realised we've actually lost 5 neon tetras and an elephant ear guppy, our platies seem to have gotten away unscathed though. Thought the aggressive one must just be an aggressive female but two days ago found him wrapped around the peaceful female squeezing eggs out so put two and two together and came up with male.
  4. Hi All, I'm from Sydney Australia and only been in the hobby for about 2 months, got my first all in one 50L tank as my 1 year old son always seemed interested when visiting aquariums etc. but now up to 4 tanks with plans for another 1 or 2. 50L community tank - 10 neon tetras, 3 guppies, 6 platies, 2 female Bettas, 1 golden catfish Got some babies being raised in a breeder tank hanging off the front, presumably platies Realised one of the Bettas we bought as female for the community tank must be male as it's been quite aggressive (killed a handful of the tetras and our elephant ear guppy) and we then found the other female giving birth with the suspected male wrapped around her squeezing the eggs out. I'm bubbling the eggs in a cup but not sure if any will be viable, 2 days now, had some eggs about a month ago that I had assumed were tetras but now realise were probably from the Bettas as well. The male Betta has now been separated into a bowl while I plan a 5th tank, just posted separately about a possible sump project for that and the following 20L tanks I've already got 20L - 10 cherry red shrimp, 1 mystery snail, 1 ramshorn snail 20L - 1 red male Betta, 1 bristlenose (not the aggressor from the community tank, separate purchase) 300L community tank - 3 salmon red rainbows, 4 electric blue rams, 8 peppermint/albino/mix of bristlenose, 10 cardinal tetras Was looking for another tank initially to separate the female Bettas before we realised the problematic Betta was likely male and stumbled upon this 300L for sale fully stocked, moved it over and got everyone back in the tank with no deaths yet (6 days) although one of the Rams is being treated for a fungus infection prior to the purchase, hopefully they pull through. Anyway seems like I've really jumped in the deep end but that's where I'm up to at the moment, thanks. Luke
  5. Hi All, Hoping for some ideas, I've got an alcove in my lounge room on top of some cupboards where I've currently got two 20L tanks from Kmart (Australia). I'm looking to add another Betta tank and maybe another shrimp tank down the line so was planning on setting up a sump with a 60cm tank that will fit perfectly into the cupboards on one side to filter all 3-4 tanks, mainly just for the fun of setting up a sump and being able to reduce the equipment in each tank. I was planning on drilling a single outlet and inlet on the back of each tank and running flexible tubing down into the cupboard for the sump, luckily there is already easy access down into the cupboard at the back of the alcove. However it looks like drilling the cheap Kmart tanks isn't going to be an option first attempt cracked the glass and while the second attempt was successful it's pretty messy and doesn't leave me overly confident I could successfully drill another 3-4 tanks. I've seen overflows designed for non-drilled tanks that have a little syphon tube that runs up and over the rim but it sounds like they're a bit risky that you could lose the syphon and end up pumping water all over the lounge room, has anyone had good success/recommend these? Alternatively does anyone in Australia have a recommendation for an alternative tank that will be easier to drill or potentially come pre-drilled? I don't really want to go down the road of 2L plastic containers but do want to keep the budget down as much as possible, Kmart tanks are AUD$39 for reference. Thanks very much, Luke
