  1. @xXInkedPhoenixX @Odd Duck Thank you, unfortunately he passed away yesterday. I had set up a 10,6L bucket and put in some antibacterial meds to treat him with, but unfortunately he passed during the night. I’m glad he’s no longer suffering though, and glad I can rest easy knowing my other fish will be safe during my 4 week trip. Thank you for the help though, glad I got a reason for his passing 🙂
  2. @xXInkedPhoenixX @Odd Duck I’ve tried feeding him everything I got, from bloodworms to daphnia to his favorite flakes. He just eats one and lays around all day depressed.. every time I tried to feed him I have to basically hand feed him and bother him until he finally eats.. hasn’t worked lately though, I’ve only seen him eat a single flake yesterday, and it was a tiny piece. Should I move him to a hospital tank with antibacterial meds for a bit or just euthanize him now? I can’t keep him in the hospital tank for long as I’m leaving the 27th for 4 weeks and was supposed to leave the tank with an autofeeder and my mother would come over one weekend to do a 50% water change. I don’t want to euthanize him if there’s hope for recovery though, but I don’t know if I have a choice if by not euthanizing him could either kill the rest of the stock along with him, or if it just prolongs his death so he starves instead.
  3. So Kiyoshi has gotten lethargic lately, and it came about when he got a lump on his face and a broken scale in his middle. I don’t know what to do, he barely eats and I’m pretty sure he’s losing weight because he’s stopped trying to eat. I only have one week left before I leave for 4 weeks, of which I’m leaving an autofeeder and will not be able to hand feed him like I am now. All day he just lays on the bottom of the tank, so much so I moved him to a breeder box so he wouldn’t have to struggle as much. I put in a floater with him and he lays on top of it so a bit of his body sticks out of the water. All of his fins look a bit ragged too, like he’s been nibbling on them at the edges. Anyone know what this is? and this is what he does all day lately: ignore all the stuff around, some are flakes from the previous day, some are daphnia from that day.
  4. Sorry I never replied! I realized maybe keeping it empty while I’m gone is a better idea and to get fish after I’m back. Also it’s exam season I’ve been really busy 😭 But I want to start planning for it already though so I have enough money to buy them and was wondering about what type and how many of each fish? You mentioned guppies, but what guppy could thrive there and how many could thrive in there? (Like endlers? Or the normal ones?) I love centerpiece fish (because I like naming them lol) so could I have one as well with the guppies or should I leave it with only guppies? I don’t mind not having one, just wondering! Also along with the guppies how many shrimp could I keep in there too? Like enough to be understocked, so I don’t need to worry too much about ammonia buildup while im gone in the future..
  5. Believe me, if I could I would. But the juwel autofeeder only has 2 settings: dispense once per day, or twice per day.. it’s battery operated too so a timer wouldn’t work 😕
  6. I’ve always loved the thought of colorful shrimp!! Could never have any small ones out of fear that they’d turn into a 5 star free meal for my bettas 😭😭 which is why I’ve always stuck with fish that don’t make my bettas wonder: “meal??” Shrimp are so adorable though, I have 3 amano currently in the 60L which I got cuz of their size, and they’re so full of personality!! But hey, maybe I should take some chances and get small ones this time! Cuz it sounds like they’d be a pretty sight in that tank :DD
  7. You’re absolutely right, I haven’t tested in a while lmaooo- the GH was at <6* and my PH was at 6,8 - 7,2 in both tanks. I have no clue how to raise or lower any of these things… my platy, betta and amano seem to thrive though, is the water too soft?
  8. Man I wish!! I live with my father and he prohibits “strangers” coming over to feed them, saying that’s what we have the autofeeder for :// I don’t have anyone to rely on that my dad is okay with to come feed them either, except my mother which lives 2 hours away. I’m actually gonna ask her to come over possibly one day or two to check in on them and do a large water change for me. Though that depends on if she wants to. And yes, I’ve thought about the Christmas week disaster (long story short: betta got Dropsy from overfeeding) for many many nights and I was thinking that maybe I could just feed them well a few days before and leave them without the autofeeder just for the vacation XDD And as for tetras, I’ve gotten a bit traumatized (irony) from 6 neons I had in my 60L who were so competitive with food that they would purposefully seek out my betta when they were eating peacefully and bite their fins, even if there was food SCATTERED EVERYWHERE and there was more than enough for everyone 😭 My female betta just got bullied during feeding time and since she was sweet and wouldn’t hurt a fly she didn’t fight back. I did separate them after I saw it for the second time. Then I put in Kiyoshi with them, and they tried that on him too and surprise surprise he retaliated and bit its tail off. Funny thing is that it was just during feeding time, any other time they’d get along with my betta. Then there were the buoyancy issues when fed flakes where once one went upside down floating upwards uncontrollably and I had to stand there with the lid open pushing it back underwater so it wouldn’t suffocate for 20 minutes. Had to sell them about a week ago cuz I realized they’d have to rely on that autofeeder soon and I wouldn’t be able to help them if something went wrong. 😭😭 So neons are probably out of the question for this one, and I’m a little bit hesitant to have other tetras but I can take a chance!
  9. (Keywords at the end so you don’t have to read all this to give advice lmao) So my 54L stands (basically) empty previously housing my 3 apparently transgender platy (I observed them since birth, had always been 3 females, now suddenly 2 of them are males 🤷‍♀️) and my giant betta Kiyoshi. They weren’t doing too well in here and Kiyoshi was really territorial of the feeding ring corner for some reason, moving them to my 60L worked wonders and everyone seems to be getting along okay. This tank is pretty overgrown full of hiding places, plants and floaters, and currently it’s being occupied by my oto and mystery snail. I want to stock it though, but have no idea what to get. I’m gone for about 5 weeks total each year, 4 on summer vacation and 1 on christmas, so I rely on autofeeders each year. Since I have to rely on autofeeders I need stock that can eat all that it dispenses without fattening them up or risking anything. It doesn’t dispense too much but for one fish it’s too much, and for my previous 6 neon tetra it was too much. (when they ate dry food they’d have buoyancy issues, and that was with less than a pinch of flakes, I can only imagine how it’d go with the autofeeder) on the lowest setting it dispenses barely anything; tried it with pellets last year with my betta who had to be on a diet and it fell right at the time I had to leave for a week, and on the lowest setting it dispensed like 5 pellets twice then quit dispensing anything completely, and with the second setting it dispensed almost 8 at a time even with a modification. With flakes too, it dispenses more with those actually, and on the lowest it still dispenses too much. (It’s a Juwel autofeeder btw) I was thinking some guppies maybe, as there’s some gorgeous completely white ones at my LFS that would create a beautiful contrast, but I dunno if there’s enough space for them in this, which is why I’m asking for advice XD Sooo stock ideas? And if there’s a way, I would love to have a female betta in there, but it’s not necessary, after all I just want happy and healthy fish ^^ All advice and criticism is welcomed!! Thank you all in advance!! Keywords: 54L, overgrown, relying on autofeeder ~5 weeks total, stock ideas? (Unrelated): Kiyoshi looking happy chilling with one of the platy >:)
  10. @Colu I tried finding Kanaplex, metroplex and maracyn2 but it’s either 65$ (which I don’t have) or there’s no shipping to here. Unfortunately he passed away today though, according to my dad he was really lethargic while I was gone and only hiding, and came out to die just so I could see him dead when I came home (thanks Zuko appreciate it). I did want to kinda shift the attention to my other giant betta who’s fine, he’s a slow dude and acts like a blind, demented old man and wether or not that’s health related beats me, hopefully it’s just his personality though. He developed this thing on his side and I’m not sure if that’s a tumor or broken scale, can you tell?
  11. @Colu just ordered medicine, no idea when it will be arriving but until then, I’ve had the 3 tbs of aquarium salt for my 30L that was filled up to 6 gal. I‘m leaving until Sunday tomorrow though, did I need to do maintenance like a water change or something each day or am I free to go? Every other week I go visit my mother for the weekend so on every other saturday it’s fasting day, unfortunate it’s this week though with Zuko’s problem..
  12. @Colu the pills are 500mg, unfortunately I think they’re on prescription only.. I’ll still try though, is 500mg too much? edit: I found 200mg and 400mg, but every sort is prescription only. What now?
  13. @Colu Just went to the pet store, they didn’t have sera direct, only the normal baktopur. I could only find the direct online… I’m ordering it for future occasions but for now, what can I do? Any other medicines I could try? I found metronidazole pills at my pharmacy, but that’s probably not the same. Maybe some esha products that can help?
  14. @Colu I unfortunately don't have metroplex anywhere here in norway unless it's online, are there any similar products by sera or esha? Also, I moved him into the 54L yesterday in case it was the filter or tank's fault in the 30L, should I move him back there for treatment? As I have a mystery snail and an oto in the 54L already I don't want to harm them or the plants, but since he's probably already stressed from being sick moving him again could potentially stress him out more. And should I still do the epsom salt baths?
  15. @Colu I think it’s unscented, it doesn’t say it is on the packaging though. It kinda smells like detergent though so I have no idea. New info though, checked on him this morning, he’s starting to pinecone and his bloat is worse, along with that he’s slower and he’s visibly lost color as his eye is getting blue again and his black markings have faded. One side of his stomach is bigger than the other. I had an idea yesterday, I’m thawing daphnia for my other fish and was thinking of soaking it after feeding the others in either sera baktopur (Active ingredient: 209.7 mg acriflavinium chloride, 4.95 mg methylthioninium chloride in 100 ml) in case it’s bacterial, or Sera Nematol Active ingredient: 320 mg emamectin benzoate in 100 ml) in case it’s the same parasites Shark had prior. Since he’s already bloated I’ll only feed one or two pieces of daphnia but at least he’d be getting the medicine internally. Which would be a safe bet? @Odd Duck And should I still do the Epsom salt bath?
  16. These are the recent photos, I circled the white area with the raised scales, he looks a bit less bloated now though. This was the best I could do cuz my camera isn’t all that great and he just doesn’t stop moving for some reason. @Odd Duck @Colu now it looks more bulged out than pineconed though, but maybe that’s just cuz of the lighting. In the second image you can see the bloat. And to answer your question as I was acclimating him into the 54L with a clear container I saw a piece of feces that wasn’t there before while he was stressing out, and he even tried to eat it but spit it out. It looked normal just not long at all. As for the diet, the first few weeks of having him I fed him frozen thawed daphnia and bloodworms, but then switched to TetraMin flakes back and forth till it stuck for a couple of days. I decided that flakes might be too much just for him so I switched him over to betta pellets also my tetra, and fed 4 - 6 pellets once per day. And I started that about 2 or 3 days ago. Last time I fed him was today, I think I fed him 4 pellets. This was before I noticed the ridiculous bloat he’d gotten with the white part. And I actually have a question about that Epsom salt thing, every time I’ve tried Epsom salt treatments it’s gone so horribly wrong or just hasn’t worked at all that I need to know if the types of salt I use are safe. This is how the Epsom salt looks like. This is the aquarium salt I use. Each time I’ve used the Epsom salt it either got worse or just didn’t help at all. When I used it on my first betta with Dropsy from possible constipation (I left for a week and left him with an autofeeder that dispensed way too many pellets despise the modifications I did to prevent it, he was already dealing with other previous issues so the constipation didn’t help) I put him in the salt bath and he seemed better for a bit, but then it just got worse and the baths seemed to just drain him of energy, until he just passed right in front of my eyes. Then it was my female betta that had more severe Dropsy which I still have no clue how she got, her case is more unique as she jumped out of the tank while waiting for her hospital tank to heat up, but I had put Epsom salt in that 30L tank but she was dead the next day. When I used the aquarium salt on my tanks all it seemed to do was harm my snail to the point he’s slow now and skittish, while the fish just either started acting weirdly or didn’t seem to be affected. Do you guys think I’ve just had bad luck with the Epsom salt or is it the wrong type? And about that chlorine, I overdo the dechlorinator actually, I just kinda squirt it in there till the water is tinted blue (the liquid is turquoise), and to get rid of any residing chlorine I dumped the water using the same container I use to acclimate onto my sponge filter to make it air out without disturbing the water current too much. I do this with every tank I have and my platy seem to actually enjoy it and chase the slight water current, my other betta was indifferent and kinda just stares (he’s like a grandpa with dementia and slightly blind, with the brain that only works once per year), and Zuko (this betta) used to be curious and not care about it, so him twitching like that and stressing was completely new. Especially as I was acclimating him to the 54L I saw all his color fade, his usually black eyes turned light blue and his black face markings just vanished leaving only red, and went back to normal when I released him early. This is really bizarre I’ll be honest.
  17. Right, so when I thought life was looking up, I got right back down to rock bottom I got a new betta a month ago, and he’s having the exact same thing as my betta Shark had when he was dying. He’s bloated, possibly pineconing a little on only his underside, and has some white patch that looks like tiny raised scales on his anus. All this is what Shark had days before his passing. Important info is that I missed a water change and did it today (my schedule is every Thursday or Friday), but I didn’t think it was much of an issue as I’d tested the water and everything was fine, additionally I had added floaters to help out. I started off with a diet of daphnia and bloodworms, but each day I grew more fatigued and hes been eating some flakes and betta pellets. My fish seem to prefer the flakes and pellets for some reason. During the water change in the 30L, when I added the new water dechlorinated with aquasafe, he started freaking out and twitching, I thought it was temperature shock or something so I stopped for a while and retested the temperature, and it was about the same just the new water was slightly warmer. This has never happened in any other tank with any other fish before, only tank and fish this has occurred with was in that 30L with a betta. When he relaxed that’s when I examined him and saw that bloat I thought was just from feeding too much. The last few days he’s ate 4 - 6 pellets each day, including today. I moved him to the 54L today as the 30L (filled to about over half) was the same one Shark passed in and I didn’t want to risk that it was Shark’s mystery killer in the filter again. As I was acclimating him he got more and more stressed , losing colors and hyperventilating so I had to release him into the tank before the time was done (15 minutes, released him with 4 minutes left) and his colors returned. I’ll be honest here, I’m about ready to give up on betta fish. All my platy are fine, and my neons were fine (and still are probably, had to rehome them), my shrimp are fine, it’s always been the bettas that get sick. And the one time the 2 platy I had died it was cuz one of my bettas infected them with camallanus and they passed from the medicine I had to administer. if anyone has any info, please let me know. I rushed out of the house to try to find medicine for him so I don’t have any photos of him currently, but this was him a bit ago. I had such wonderful help last time, so maybe you could help again @Odd Duck@Colu? Thank you in advance!! edit: upon further inspection only the white part on his anus looks to be "pineconing", although he is bloated.
  18. @xXInkedPhoenixX thank you, I appreciate it :)) @Odd Duck thank you. I’ll be honest I’m pretty sure it might’ve began as constipation. He was a bit thin, so I thought feeding a little more would help him out with the recovery. It was always one feeding person day, and I should have switched back and forth from bloodworms like I used to, but again I had no energy to do anything at all especially after school, so since feeding time is when I arrive home, during that time he was on a betta flake diet every day. It wasn’t too much either, I sprinkled in less than I do for my neon tank. (which I can’t feed much because they start having trouble with their swim bladder or something with their own flakes) April 12th I realized I might’ve accidentally given too much, since right after eating his stomach was a bit bigger than usual and he was a bit slower too, so realizing my mistake I said I’d fast him for a day or 2 to see if it helped. So the next day I checked during the morning and his stomach had gone from blood red (which he had before) to completely white, still bloated. Then I arrived after school, he was lethargic and his tail was floating, so I moved him to a breeder box so he had easier access to the surface, did a 50% water change and dosed the Epsom salt. Then he passed. while I was observing him in the breeder box while he was alive, I did notice first off that it looked like there was a piece of light brown poo sticking out, but that’s impossible because it should be red first of all (the flakes he ate are red and his poop is always some sort of red if not dark brown, never light brown) and attached to it was what seemed like white stringy poo. Then, today before I went to school and he was till alive, I checked up on his stomach and it DID seem to be pineconing, just on his stomach, nowhere else. Just slightly. And this time he wasn’t at the bottom of the box, he was floating up top. Not upside down, he was up right. That’s all I noticed though, besides the obvious color fading he had from the agony he was probably in. I did successfully flare him with a pen up until today though, which was meant to be so he’d maybe force it out or something like my other betta does (unintentionally found out about it as I wanted to take a picture of him flaring and ended up with a giant bowel movement photobombing the entire thing LMAO) So that’s about all the info I have of him. You got any clue? Like the stomach maybe exploded or something?
  19. @Odd Duck well, there’s no need for this thread anymore, Shark passed away today. it was so sudden, the 12th of April after I fed him he started acting weird and slow, stopping and staring at the distance all bloated. I decided I’d just fast him the next day after and see if he gets better, and that morning he was WAY slower, wouldn’t react to anything while just standing in place. His stomach was white suddenly, when it was bright red the day before. I left for school and I came back to find him nowhere, when he’d usually already be up and greeting me by the time I get in the doorway. He was in his hide, laying but his tail was seemingly being floated up. He wasn’t moving at all but not breathing heavily. I lifted the hide and moved him into a breeder box and did a water change (tested the water first though and the parameters were perfect). I checked and he didn’t seem to be visibly pineconing anywhere, and his bloating was going down, but he just got worse and worse. I thought it was constipation so I dosed Epsom salt (1 tsp per 9L), but it didn’t seem to help. He just got worse. I hadn’t fed him at all since 12th of April btw. I woke up today, and he seemed weak, and I thought for sure I’d come home to a dead fish. I was right. I came home from school and he was twisted and seemingly died half breath (a deep one it was wide open, his beard was flaring a little), and standing vertically, his tail floating. I decided I’d investigate so I could try to pinpoint what happened, and discovered that his gills were completely white. The actual gills, I’m not sure if that’s cuz he’s dead or if that was a symptom. It also started after I’d added the rest of some water conditioner cuz I hadn’t changed his water since last week (I’ve been really busy and myself have been a bit weak, so I couldn’t do it until that day), and something that looked like salt now that I think about it kinda dropped in there with him. I assumed at the time it might’ve been either 2 pieces of aquarium salt that leaked on my table at some point and it just got in there somehow, or it was some dried flakes of water the conditioner. Either way I didn’t think much of it, but that might’ve contributed somehow. I took a picture of him like that because I found it so bizarre how his head was twisted like that and him being vertical. Since it’s obviously a dead fish I won’t add it here instantly but I’ll send a Imgur link. https://imgur.com/a/niSFAbl It doesn’t look like much but it’s worse if you see from the side (which I didn’t take a picture of). It looked more twisted before but this is after I moved around the breeder box to examine him so it’s a bit more fixed. If you have any idea of what happened, please let me know. rest in peace Shark 😞
  20. @Odd Duck Ohhh, do they just grow in like that? I didn’t know :0 He’s not lacking in vision or have any disadvantages that I can see though, quite the opposite actually, I can just slightly appear in the doorway and he’s already up and greeting me haha but what about the holes on him though? When I look at them they look like little wounds shaped as pinholes, and it’s all over him, plus his fins are all clamped up until I get his attention to which he fluffs them up for a bit. here’s him 3 weeks ago when I flared him, no holes in sight. And this is now, I didn’t get a good picture because he doesn’t stand still but all these holes are spread throughout his body, but I haven’t seen them on the blue parts I think. the temperature is at about 80 F, so it’s not the temperature that’s causing the clamping.. and his tail isn’t growing back at all, the coloring is, however, returning. I hope this isn’t some sort of bacteria or something that’s eating him alive…
  21. @Odd Duck thank you! I do have some more concerns over him. His body is like.. covered in holes, it looks kinda like chipped paint, along with more scarring which shouldn’t be possible because I’ve checked and carefully placed all the hides and even took one out that was a bit risky. His top fin that was coloring up nicely now has a dot that’s discoloring again, and he’s acting weird. His fins are clamped up until I catch his attention, then he fluffs them up and acts all playful. But otherwise he’s just kinda slower and acting all weird, plus his tail hasn’t healed even though my neon who had its tail bitten off like MONTHS after Shark’s tail got like that, its tail is almost completely back, so I don’t understand what’s going on for it to take THAT long. (The neon issue was resolved btw don’t worry) Only good thing I noticed is that his pectoral fins are coloring up a LOT, like before they were both transparent but now one is almost full white with some dots of blue and the other is blue with a few dots of white, but that’s where the good things end. He’s eating well though, so I don’t really know what’s going on, any clue? Here’s the holes along with scarringface seems to be peeling off or something (just noticed actually)
  22. @Odd Duck No worries! I completely understand! And yeah you were right, its gone now but the scales are still a bit messed up. he's got 2 indian almond leaves in with him, but the brown water is now gone since I did water changes... I'm not home at the moment, but last time I checked on friday he's active, eating well and interactive with the surroundings. Only thing I'm worried about is still his colors and some scales still missing and looking a bit broken ish. That along with his still not healing tail. Doesn't seem like its getting any worse though, it's just not healing.
  23. @Odd Duck I flared him and had a look, theres nothing IN the gills themselves, the thing looks like its coming from in between?? If that makes sense?? when not flared its right on the gill cover, bordering the inside, the scales look a bit broken behind the gill cover though. He is currently in a hospital tank by himself, so there's no issue with any medicine. I'm in Norway by the way, so I'm not sure I have any specifics you can get in the US. In my LFS theres only products by sera and esha, and I currently have tremazol, nematol and baktopur by sera and Exit by esha on hand, although I'm more than willing to go buy something else if none of these are relevant. I can also buy something off amazon but that might take a while to get here. Any specifics I could get?
  24. @Colu long and white? All the decor and stuff in the hospital tank is baby proofed, everything is away from the corners and no sharp edges, don’t see a way he could injure himself..
  25. @Colu @nabokovfan87 Here it is, it’s only 4 seconds long though you’ll have to zoom in and all that. it’s still there today as well. Should I use medicine?
