  1. My tank experienced some nutrient imbalance and had a nasty algae bloom that I'm still fighting off. In the meantime one of my anubias plants decided to bloom: That's the first time I've had it happen and it made me happy to see it.
  2. Here's doggo Lucy looking like a total derp: Normally she looks like this:
  3. Yep. We just finished up a DnD 5e module for the Spelljammer setting. DnD in space with magic-powered space ships is a lot of fun. Plus there are space hippos! Were you running the 5e version? We finished that up last year and it was great. That time crunch aspect to it that made things really exciting for our party near the end of the campaign. Also learned that Tensor's Floating Disc can be very, very useful when escaping the BBEG's lair with valuable loot.
  4. High of 101 today and no cloud cover. I won't be going outside much during the day for the next few months as it will only get hotter from here.
  5. I can see the java fern rhizome so it's looking good. Keep in mind even if java fern leaves turn brown they may still grow leaflets out of the little "seed pods" that are on every leaf. These can grow into a whole new plant, so your java fern may be a beastly ball of leaves when you return to the tank. Personally I love that look but it's just another thing to keep in mind.
  6. Got it. I'll work on a solution to get it more light without increasing the photo period for the entire tank in that case. I guess it will just have green leaves for now. As long as it doesn't die I'm cool with that.
  7. Thank you! I have the ACO lights running at 80% so it's probably bright enough and if not I can crank up the brightness a bit more.
  8. Does anyone know what this plant is? It was labeled as Lobelia Cardinalis but based on some Googling this seems wrong. It arrived with bright purple and green leaves but unsure if the purple color will return as those leaves are all melting off and being replaced with bright green ones: The photo from Amazon looked like this: It looked like this when it arrived but acclimating seems to have made it lose the color.
  9. Did a water change yesterday and did some trimming, replanting, and burying of root tabs. Tank looks good, fish look healthy. Here are a few pictures: This big red sword plant I got from Amazon is doing very well indeed! That leaf is huge! Barbs photobombing: The coffefolia keeps growing new leaves: Anyone know what this plant is? It was labeled as Lobelia Cardinalis but based on some Googling this seems wrong. It arrived with bright purple and green leaves but unsure if the purple color will return as those leaves are all melting off: The photo from Amazon looked like this: It looked like this when it arrived but acclimating seems to have made it lose the color. Finally, I basically killed my scarlet temple. Shoved it in the foreground into some aquasoil in an attempt to give it light and nutrients to revive it but I'm not holding my breath:
  10. Holy crap that looks just like slime mold! Maybe your fish will eat it? Reference pics of slime mold:
  11. I found a little stowaway on a piece of driftwood yesterday: Very excited for the inevitable "pest snail" invasion to swing into action. Caught this chonky pig lurking near a big rock: This fish has to be at least 5 years old at this point. Super proud of that fact. Decided to make a new tank video since I've recently added more plants:
  12. Jeez I didn't realize until just now how much the monte carlo on the top section has grown!
  13. I was also wondering if this is normal for a heavily planted tank so thank you! I have been reading 0 nitrates since I set up my new tank but I definitely never had an ammonia spike or die offs. I do add fertilizers but they don't ever seem to increase the nitrate levels.
  14. I found some tissue cultured Buce in great condition in a Petsmart far from home over the weekend. I glued it to my driftwood and am excited to see how well it grows: And a little Oto friend as a bonus:
  15. I haven't been re-mineralizing because I originally filled the tank with conditioned tap water and I only do 5 gallon water changes at a time (basically I am dumping 5 gallons of RO water into ~40 gallons of tank tap water). When I test my water hardness post water change it's still showing as through the roof on the ACO test strips. Snails look good though, I am not seeing any pitting in the shells. Shrimp also seem to be molting just fine. I am also putting liquid ferts in the tank for my plants post water change.
  16. I got another Oto today (I was hoping to get 5 more but alas the LFS doesn't get their shipment until next week) and learned a very valuable lesson. I will never again use a net to catch an Oto. Mine somehow got its mouth STUCK to the mesh on the net when I poured it out of the LFS bag. Thankfully I was able to help it get loose and it seems okay (looks to be merrily munching algae) but that was a terrible experience! I love Otos and never want to cause harm to one!
  17. Excited to see all the epiphytes you end up strapping to those prime anchoring spots!
  18. Polyphia has burrowed deep within my grey matter: I've had them on repeat for weeks now.
  19. The only RODI system I have experience with is the one I have. I don't know enough to feel confident in recommending any other system, especially one that will filter water in your entire household.
  20. I am not on well water but the city tap water here in Phoenix is not potable due to the incredibly high TDS. The SpectraPure RODI system does an excellent job of getting my TDS down to zero so it should work fine for you as well. Keep in mind that you would only use a unit like this for your fish tank. For example, on water change day I hook up a garden hose to a faucet then hook that hose to the RODI unit and fill a 5 gallon bucket with the filtered water to later be put in my tank. Drinking treated RODI water isn't recommended since it strips trace elements from the tap water that are necessary for survival.
  21. Also a fellow IT nerd, I am currently developing a .NET application for a client. The best thing is watching your tank as you wait for unit tests to finish running! Sadly I don't have space for a home office tank at the moment but it's certainly in my future.
