  1. Sure, you can use the rest of the container. What is it?
  2. Man, this is a depressing thread. ACs have long been one of the bedrock products in this hobby. I got my start with them 30 some years ago -- used them religiously when I had as many as six tanks -- and they have been my no-need-to-think-about-it recommendation to everyone for decades. Now? I'm a little hesitant. Add that to my discovery yesterday that FilStars have been discontinued, and literally everything I had saved away re filters has been obliterated. Sigh.
  3. Completely true. However, why feed your fish 50 cents worth of unknown food? Seems like an unnecessary cost savings to me.
  4. What you are using is called a level. You're using it correctly. How long is the total piece of equipment (not just the width of the yellow chamber.). If the tool is 3' long it is a much more stable measurement. If the level is 7" the measurement is not going to be as reliable. If you're using a 7" level, I'd shim your tank. If the level in the pic is a 3' level, I'd leave the tank as is.
  5. How long is your level? If it's 3' that should be fine. Otherwise, go with what DaveO said.
  6. I have no idea. Where are your Betta and snail now? I've never bought fish mail order. I'd see what looks good in your local store.
  7. I'm so sorry. This has been heartrending for you I know. It's been heartbreaking just reading this thread. Where did you get the fish?
  8. So the FilStar has been discontinued. Apparently three years ago, though I got on walmart.com a year ago. Pity. It's a great filter.
  9. I too love the Hikari micro pellets. I'm about to set up a new tank featuring checker barbs, and that will be my staple.
  10. I have had very good luck with Fil Star. I agree with Pepere, it's very easy to clean. Do it once a month, takes me half an hour. Big, easily accessed media baskets. Pretty quiet, the loudest thing on my tank is the air stone. It's not self-priming but to be honest, it's not a problem. Maybe twice a year I have to fill the tubes by hand. I get the love for ACs. All the tank setups I've done for friends I've recommended ACS. But I have a cabinet underneath the tank and I can hide the filter completely. I can push the tank right up to the wall. You can't see the tubes. I think I'd only use an AC on a 29 or 20 gallon tank.
  11. Duckweed could become the first first new major crop in over a century (since the cultivation of soybeans.) And the key is rubisco, a powerhouse protein found in leaves that might have more commercial uses than other plant-based proteins. https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-environment/2023/06/27/new-plant-based-meat-developing-rubisco-duckweed/
  12. That just sucks. Sorry for the language, but some times it is justified.
  13. Avoid coniferous woods and green wood. Boil the heck out of it. And I'd let it soak for a week in a hydrogen peroxide solution.
  14. I'm not really a hobbyist, I just like having a tank. But when I first dived into the hobby world 25 years ago on AquariaCentral and on a goldfish BB, Prime was easily the most beloved product out there. I've been shocked to find that there are folks out there who don't love it.
  15. I keep goldies, so always happy to hear about them. But I'm on autopilot with my goldies. I gave up on plants a long time ago, and am much happier, to be honest. I know what products work for me -- Prime, Purigen, and a Fil Stat cannister -- and I have a varied food regime. I have a bio load that most would consider excessive, but as long as I do regular water changes, the water parameters check out. To the point that I only check water once a month. I don't have much to contribute goldy wise, but do love to hear about them.
  16. Happy day to all my fellow Nerms!
  17. I've wanted a pond for years. Good for you! I think there is so much variation in goldies that I don't see the need to find something other to pair with them. The four people who I know who are most successful with their ponds all plant in containers. Easier to do plant maintenance without having to get in the pond.
  18. I had a black moor that hid. So much so that my son named him Waldo, as in Where's Waldo? Without attaching to the back of the wood, he was quite elusive. He was that way for maybe two years. And interestingly, I never saw him feed. Pellets would be raining down around him, and he wouldn't eat. Must have at some point because he's 12 now...
  19. An air stone in the new water was the old school method of dechlorinating water. I started out 30 years ago and without the interwebs was very skeptical of the dechlorinators out there. I did this for 10 years before someone recommended Prime to me.
  20. When I introduce fish to the quarantine tank, I cover it with a towel for a day or two. Best place for my QT is in the kitchen, so there's plenty of light. When I move to the main tank, I typically do it in the evening and the lights will be off. I will turn on the lights the next day (but it's usually just in the afternoon/evening) so fish will have 20 some hours in the main tank sans lights. After that, I've never noticed a problem.
  21. Not to threadjack, but does Aquahuna ever actually have fish? Every time I have ever visited the site, it seems they are sold out of 90% of their fish stocks.
  22. It was. But, you know, it was my first programmable light. I had three settings emulating dawn and ramping up to full daylight. Then the reverse in the evening, dimming down through dusk. It was really cool. But I started at 7am going on through 11pm when I usually go to bed.
  23. Not on Team Algae. I don't like the look of algae in a tank. So combatting it is Job One in my household. I've learned in recent years to have my lights on for shorter numbers of hours each day: 6 hours versus 15. Made all the difference in the world.
  24. Mopani wood is my hard scape palate of choice. I average 4 good-sized pieces per 55/62 gallon tank over the last 17 years. My pH has been very stable over that time. First time use, I would follow Nabokov's cleaning regime.
