  1. Here's my Easy Carbon versus hair algae worthless test. I bought Easy Carbon to try and tackle some hair algae in various tanks. After pulling out strands of hair algae from my little indoor pond tank that I had dosed with Easy Carbon, I put the hair algae (with bits of xmas moss and subwassertang) into this little container with about 2 cups of water to try a test. I added one pump of Easy Carbon into the container and I took pictures on day 1, day 2, day3, day 5 and day 6; I forgot to take a picture on day 4. On day 3, I did a water change and put another full pump of Easy Carbon in. I was hoping to see the hair algae melting away since this is a huge overdose (a pump into 2 cups of water as opposed to 10 gallons). The day 5 and 6 pictures do show the algae definitely turning brown so it is slowly working under this extreme test but it's slower than I'd hope. In my actual tanks, I haven't noticed any significant (or insignificant) changes with regards to the hair algae so I think I'll up my dosing and hope for the best, keeping my expectations low. If I hadn't already purchased Easy Carbon, I'd probably skip it for hair algae control.
  2. Bowls are fun and yours looks great. But in such a small bowl, especially without a ton of livestock, that sponge filter seems out of place aesthetically. I'm using a tiny sponge filter (search for B085GJLT3L as an overpriced example on Amazon) in my 3 gallon bowl that has cherry shrimp in it. But in a planted bowl (or fish tank) with low bioload, consider skipping the filter and using just an airstone just for water movement and surface agitation. I'd also add an air valve to control the bubbles if your air pump is too powerful for the little bowl.
  3. I just bought a second Aquatop 14" cube (HCC-14) that was on sale at a local Seattle store ... I had no intention of buying another tank when I saw it but couldn't turn it down. It will sit next to the same 14" cube I bought two years ago. I'm a rimless cube fan and this Aquatop 11.33 gallon tank just happens to be the right size and the right price for me.
  4. My little deck pond. Roughly 125 gallons of water, built in early 2000's so it's 15+ years old. Outer frame of 2x10", with liner over foam boards on sides and base. I'm amazed the original pond filter (Pondmaster) and liner are still functional. Creatures include a half dozen or so goldfish (shubukin, sarasas, and a wakin that Corey bagged up for me from Co-op years ago). I have too many arrowhead plants ... anyone up for a trade?
