  1. This isn't a altogether new tank. It's been up since early December. I suppose the red stuff could be BBA that has died and I just didn't notice. But it hadn't grown on any plants or rocks in this tank. Anyone have suggestions on the purple algae on the rocks?
  2. I have asked in various local facebook groups and forums for an answer as well as many, many, many Google searches and cannot seem to find an answer outside of cyanobacteria. But it doesn't have any of the characteristics of cyanobacteria such as smell and so forth. One tank which is a more heavily planted 75 gallon. The algae on the glass and only on the glass is a bright red color and has to be scraped off. When I scrape it off it acts like green algae or any other algae on the glass and just clumps up and floats away. Another tank which is a still somewhat heavily planted 40 gallon breeder tank. I have some black rocks with white minerals in them. I forget the name of the rock. And this algae only seems to grow on the largest of these rocks and it's like a deep purple color. Any suggestions on what it is or help to get rid of it would be appreciated
  3. I'm treating a fish that looks to have scraped its "nose" on something and has a fungal infection. I don't currently have a hospital tank so I dosed the whole tank which does include other fish as well as a bunch of pest snails. Maracyn oxy does say it's poisonous to invertebrates, and I haven't seen any active snails in a few days. I'm guessing it killed all the snails. Problem is...... Now I've got a small ammonia spike. I just did a large probably 60%+ water change to help dilute and obviously dosed prime. I guess my question is, with the amount of small pest snails I saw in there, what kind of ammonia spike could I be looking for? I have to be out of town for work and probably not going to be able to do daily water changes.
  4. While waiting on my bottle of easy green fertilizer, I had to get something to put in the tank after a few weeks of having it planted. I bought seachem flourish for now. My easy green should be here Sunday or Monday. Upon recommendation from my local fish store, I used tropica root tabs for the actual planted root feeders that I have. I've been keeping an eye on parameters being it's a new tank, and have concerning levels of nitrite and nitrate. Nitrate. I did about a 30% water change last night and looking at the color of the nitrate test I still have somewhere around 30 or 40 PPM, and my nitrite is around 0.25 PPM. Is this increase in nitrate and nitrite caused by the fertilizer and root tabs? If so, it kind of defeats the purpose of having the fertilizer in the tank if I have to do multiple water changes immediately after fertilizing in order to keep nitrates down from poisoning my fish.
