1930s historically accurate planted aquarium
bm3aquatic replied to Daniel's topic in Photos, Videos & Journals
I am currently reading a book on the history of the hobby in America (the first 100 years). It was fascinating to me that they had paludariums in the 1850's and the first plant used was vallisneria. Saltwater tanks were filled with sea water brought back from the ocean. Since there was no access to sea water they would pour the water back and forth daily with the window open for aeration. I am really interested to see what you do. What is old is new again.- 294 replies

Any ideas on where to purchase a lowboy online? Also, I have no LFS and Petco/PetSmart near me don’t carry larger tanks I.e. 125 and up. Is there a good online seller that won’t break the bank?

Thanks for the info on Android 👍

Thank you, that makes it so simple.

They usually live 3-5 yrs. It seems at least in my experience that the 3 spot are more aggressive. The dwarf got lodged between a rock. I did get a glass top and new lights about that time. Thank you for the input.

Now that I think about it I went from a hood lights to a glass top with new lights around the same time.

Thank you everyone for your wonderful input. I had another male gourami early on, got them at the same time. As they grew older the female harassed the male then later they fought severely. I had to get rid of the male. She picked on the dwarf relentlessly and I found it dead wedged between a rock. I have had lots of gourami's over my lifetime and it seems that some just end up with more aggressive personalities.

How did you get started fish-keeping, anyway? 🐟
bm3aquatic replied to DaveSamsell's topic in General Discussion
I got my first aquarium for my 10th birthday (a ten gallon). I don’t remember how I got interested in it but remember the excitement, the triumphs and failures. I had gourami’s and an angel fish and many others along the way. We lived in the suburbs of Ohio and I was the only one who had fish or developed an interest out of seven kids. As an adult I had them a few times but two years ago I discovered the fish community on YouTube just after getting a 55 gallon. So much had changed in the hobby and I dove into research and of course before I knew it I had two more tanks. Thinking back now I do remember a friend that had guppies, that may have influenced me but to this day I’ve never had Livebearers. -
Can you choose just one ? ** Fish Challenge ** 🐬

What a great question! I am fascinated with Stiphodon gobies. They are really interesting but there isn’t a lot of information on them. I have five dwarf gobies and one larger one, I love the way they swim and when they all hang out together. -
I've had a female 3 spot gourami for 2 yrs. About 2 months ago her friend/enemy male dwarf gourami died (she chased the dwarf gourami sometimes). Ever since she has been hiding. Zooms away when I come near the tank. She was a voracious eater and never timid. She is in with mellow fish, harlequins, tetras, stiphodons. After I leave the tank she comes out to eat but all food is gone. I started sinking food which she eats. What's going on? I have had gourami's since I was a kid.

Daniel, Thank you for your response, I have heard arguments for both. I prefer longer tanks as well. I appreciate your insight.- 10 replies

I agree with Frost, Mopani wood is excellent. I have it in two tanks. I soaked the first one for about 6 weeks to remove the tannins. The second was a huge piece that I didn't and leeched for quite a while but goes away with time and water changes. If you like tannins some fish prefer it. Another alternative for backgrounds if you want one is window cling just wet the tank and apply. There are videos on YouTube if you are interested in that. I really like Dragon stone. I also collect rocks locally. -
Thank you Bill and Dawn that helps me out a lot. Dawn our water is the same as yours and we had a softener for the reasons you stated prior to keeping fish. Thank you both for the input, much appreciated 🙏
