  1. Thanks! I guess I never really thought about some getting so much bigger than others. I will definitely add some protein to his diet and then try a few plants with him again. I guess my fish ate most/all of their foods before it got to the bottom where he could get some (when he was with cherry barbs who eat bug bites and frozen bloodworms and brine shrimp).
  2. Thanks for the responses! Seems I may have a large mystery that devours everything or if he grows anymore possibly some other kind of apple snail. any other snail experts feel free to make ID opinions I had to move and only have room for one tank that is pretty heavily planted so he stays in this five gallon primarily eating algae wafers with the occasional veggie and not getting a lot of water changes as I live over three hours away so only get to it when I come out not ideal but the best I can do.
  3. Yeah I’m from Canada and they are banned here too so not sure how petsmart ended up with them. Thankfully I only have one and never seen any eggs so breeding shouldn’t be a problem.
  4. Thanks for the response. That’s what I was leaning towards especially given his current size just figured I’d ask if anyone could tell. No more petsmart mystery snails for me either way!
  5. I got a mystery snail from petsmart about 7/8 months ago maybe a little bigger than a quarter…. Well now he’s pushing 3inches and I’m wondering if maybe I’ve got something else. He was in a planted tank but was moved to a tank without after he ate almost everything (even healthy anubias plants). I was feeding him a veggie almost daily trying to satisfy him but had to move him to a tank without live plants. Thoughts on if this is actually a mystery snail or something else?
  6. Trichopodus trichopterus Is the scientific name it includes the opaline, blue, gold and three spot gourami, there may still be more common names, but they are all colour morphs of the same species
  7. I do not yet have this set up but am hoping to at some point set up a 75g tank with blue/gold gourami (same sp different colours). I was wondering what could go with them and how many gourami would be best to reduce any aggression? Would one gourami be best or a pair/trio or group? Could they live with cherry barbs and rummynose tetras or would a different schooling fish be better? Also I would assume Cory catfish would be ok since they primarily inhabit the bottom and the gourami would be up higher? I know this is early as I probably won’t be able to do it for months maybe closer to a year, just like to plan things out with research and couldn’t find a real good answer from my searches and would appreciate the opinions of people who have experience with gourami especially the noted blue/gold variety as I have heard they can be more aggressive than others. My plan would include a fair number of low tech plants, with hopefully jungle val and/or some other taller plants to brake up sight lines.
  8. Thanks for the info. I was thought it looked a bit far forward. They will eat whatever I put in the tank usually within a couple minutes, I’ve been trying not to over feed them. I think I will try fasting them for a couple days and see if that helps.
  9. I have 10 Cherry barbs I got just over a week ago and some of them appear rather large almost ‘boxy’ as I used to see with my Molly fish before they had fry. I didn’t notice at the store but a when I got them home. My tank is 25gallons 32in across. pH 7.4-7.6 (api kit looks highest possible on the regular and the lowest on the high range) ammonia and nitrite 0 nitrate 10 maybe 20(planted tank) kh 6 gh 11-12. They also live with my betta who doesn’t seem bothered, they ignore each other and I have a backup tank if he ever needs to be moved. my main question is are the fish bloated or carrying eggs? I don’t see any scale lifting or pine coning and they all eat readily as soon as food is added I’ve been feeding bug bites, frozen brine shrimp and deshelled peas. they also seem to swim normally. I also don’t have any obvious bright red males, if it is eggs will they still spawn or re absorb the eggs without a male to fertilize? hopefully the pictures are ok they don’t really stay still for long.
  10. I have just joined the forum from Canada. I have been keeping fish for about 5 years now, I had 3 almost 4 tanks before I had to move a year and a half ago now I have a 75 at my grandmas 4 hours away from me I have someone to feed the fish from pill organizers filled with food and do water changes whenever I am there, and a 25 at my home, I can't have the 75 in the apartment😪. I learned a ton from the Aquarium Co-Op youtube, from learning about the cycling process and the diy cinder block stand (super for those like me who are not the most handy!) to beginner friendly plant recommendations. In this 25 gallon tank is my very strong betta Pig, he moved with me three times in the last year and survived a 72hour power outage due to an April snowstorm where despite the blankets I used to try and keep the heat in, his tank (a 5gallon at the time) dipped to 14C, about 10-12C lower than usual. I am hoping to get some tetras for this tank soon not sure what kind exactly as it will depend on whats available when the time comes, I have to travel about 2 hours away to get from a reliable store. We can't get meds here in Canada without a vet prescription and there aren't many vets who consult on fish, so getting healthy fish is super important. These Pictures are one week apart and the growth of the lily is crazy! As you can tell I have really fallen for the plants these past months, the tank has been in this place since mid September when I added the majority of these plants(got the lily in August), the anubias and small crypt are split from my original tanks, the Moneywort and sword are from pet smart and the rest are from The Plant Guy, an online seller who ships across Canada and does local pickups.
