    @Flumpweesel I just turned the lights off completley - totally didnt think of that. I'm feeding some live baby brine sunday evening. So I'll turn them on sunday afternoon to see if they will go after the BBS. Its very heavily planted and lots of hiding places. Heres a photo of the tank:

    I received two sparkiling gourami in the mail on Tuesday. Along with 6 CPDs, that were supposed to serve as dither fish. However the CPDS were a DOA. So as of right now its just the two gourami in the 5 gallon. They are extremely shy and almost never see them. They still aren't eating. I'm wondering what I can do to get them less stressed and more adjusted to their surroundings. I don't have anything that I could put in to serve as dither fish, as I think that would really help this situation. Anything thats helped with you in the past? I tried feeding them some frozen brine shrimp that all my fish love. Still not eating.

    All the fish seem to be settiling in nicely. The apistos ate today, and the male is more active and personal to me. I was told to name him Sylvester, so thats his new name. The gouramis also have been settiling in, all though will take some time. They dont have any dither fish, because the CPDS were a DOA. They seemed intersted in their food today but I dont think ate any. I'll start hatching out some BBS which should help to get them to settle in. MALE (SYLVESTER)FEMALE

    Interesting, thanks guys! I think I'll go ahead with the order, the plan is to get the aquarium within the week or two of the plants coming. I'll keep in mind all these tips and ensure the plants will be healthy for the 20long. Worst case scenario and the aquarium is taking longer then expected I'll just plant them. I'm not too worried about it being sterilized and having no algae on them. The dealer I'm getting this from does his own TC, meaning its actually cheaper to buy the TC then one of the potted plants he gets fromt tropica and other farms.

    @Kurt Brutting I find it takes a little while before you see growth. Make sure the bulb isn't squishy however. Once you see growth, it never stops. It just takes a bit for that initial step. You can also start looking for roots, once you see the roots put the roots in the substrate leaving the bulb exposed above the substrate.

    @AndreaW If you live in Canada I can give you a good source for buying plants from, currently they have java fern thors hammer instock. I would suggest Easy Root Tabs.

    So I'm getting ready a plant order that will probably be here on Tuesday or Wednesday. However the tank they are going in wont be setup for another few weeks. I'm getting everything ready for when I buy the tank itself. Becasue its going the tank is going to take up a lot of room, the plan would be to buy it last. However my plant order is consiting of 5 containers of tissue culture. I'm wondering as to how I would go about keeping them alive in there cups. Obviously they need light, and nutrients. Should I float them in my aquariums so that the container is exposed to regular aquarium lighting? Or would taking them out of their tub completley and planting it right away, leaving them in the substrate for a few weeks be the better option.

    Aww that sucks, I love anubias. Some Bucephalandra would work, very low light, gourgoues little plant and a rhizome plant. All though compared to anubias it can be quite pricey. In canada I've found some buce for as low as $10, and as high as $15. Some other species of java fern might interest you as well. Some that come to mind would be, Thors Hammer, Windelov, I've seen "Java Fern Petite". Lots of cool option for you. Other low light plants that I've found great sucess keeping with very little work would be some cryptacoryne. All though its not a rhizome plant. Give it some root tabs and itll be smooth sailing from there.

    The fish came early this morning! 9:45am! I dont think I've ever had a package arrive in such time. But none the less, the faster the better. I was very impressed with the packaging. Several still warm heatpacks. The apistogramma pair and the gouramis all came in looking very happy. However the CPDs were a DOA, I got a refund though so its fine. The gouramis have lots of places to hide so I'm only able to find one, under a bunch of dwarf sag. Their eyes are a very bright beautifal blue, its awesome. The Male Apistogramma started checking all his new tank mates out (all the mollys) as the female made its way to the cave that I made. Eventually the male followed. Seriosuly the Bacopa in this tank, I've been seeing new growth everyday! @xXInkedPhoenixXthats very exciting, and I defentley can't wait for mine to start doing that. This Bacopa was my first stem plant, so I was defentley a little nervous at first. I'm pllanning out some 20 long and hopping I get some trimmings from this bacopa so I can incoperate some in the 20 long Along with the fish I purchased Some hikari food: Vibra Bites Micro Pellets I'm very excited to try these foods out, and I'm thinking they will be perfect for the gouramis and cpds considering their size.

    I have fish that are supposed to be coming tomorrow! Apistogramma Borelli Opal Pair Sparkiling Gourami x2 Celestrial Pearl Danio x6 Both the gouramis and pearl danios will be going in the 5 gallon barry was in. The apistogramma will be bred in the 40 gallon with the mollies. One of the mamma mollies just gave birth to more fry, awesome! Everyones been doing great, with another very pregant molly! Today I decided to prep for all of these arrivals. Doing waterchanges on all tanks. 40 Gallon (Apistogramma will be bred in here along with the current mollys) 25% Waterchange Trimmed some hornwort Adjusted the wood to make a cave for the apistos Current Water Parameters after waterchange Nitrates: 35ppm Nitrites 0ppm Amonia: 0ppm PH: 7.0ppm 10 Gallon (Breeding Tiger Platys) 50% Waterchange Trimmed up some pogostemon and removed some hair algae LOTS OF BABIES HIDING EVERYWHERE Current Water Parameters after waterchange Nitrates: 40ppm Nitrites: 0ppm Amonia: 0ppm PH: 7.0ph I'm really not liking the look of this tank. Its just a big pile of mulm with the java fern and hygrophillia, and of course the never stop growing pogostemon. I'm upgrading this to a 20 gallon long soon, so I'll rescape it then. I have started putting together my plant order for it. Fluval Spec 5 Gallon (Home for the sparkliling gouramis and cpds) No waterchange, just a top off Some really great growth of plants, bacopa just taking off Lots of baby snails, I'm waiting for the frogbit to take off. Current Water Parameters Nitrates: 10ppm Nitrites: 0 ppm Amonia: 0ppm PH: 7.0ppm After dimming the light, and letting the light on stay for longer (9:30am - 9pm, 11.5hrs) I've seen some dramatic plant growth. The Bacopa really adjusted well to that change as well as the anubias.

    Thats great! I had a group of platys and for the longest time never saw any fry. I walked downstairs to do some tank matnience... and all of a sudden theres fry left and right! I totally get what your feeling!🥳 🥳 🥳🥳

    I like to try and gentley remove plants from the subtrate, making sure I'm not tearing up or ripping any roots. I've done this every time and I find doing it slowly and steadily is my best tip.

    I have a aponogeton madagascariensis. Its in in my 40 gallon, and doing just fine. I beleive both species grow simillar. I'm tagging @Guppysnail and @anewbie. I believe both of these members own a few species of aponongeten and can offer more advice then I.

    I found a baby java fern! I've decided to super glue it in my 5 gallon. And a cute snail pic: After barrys death the tank has been a little snail crazy I finally got a specimen container! My old one broke so I had to throw it out, and oh boy did i miss having one. I find I use them every time I do tank matnience.

    Okay I've put together two other option. I dont think housing shrimp and gourami will be successful. So here are my other two options: Sparkling Gourami, CPDs. I was thinking two gouramis, and maybe 5-6 CPDs. Would this be overstocked? Betta Imbellis, CPDs. Once again 5-6 CPDs.

    Okay so now that my beloved pea puffer, I want to start thinking about the future plans for his tanks. Its the Fluval Spec 5 Gallon. I want this to be more of a community setup then a one spotlight species tank. Here are some of the options I was considering, let me know your thoughts: Sparklining Gourami x3, Neocaridina Shrimp. Only problem is I'm not sure about mixing the two, I've found mixed reviews online. If I did this I would have an empty tank ready to take some shrimp need be. Betta Imbellis, Pygmy Corys or maybe another peacful nano fish. Thanks a lot @Fish Folk, my wallet may never recover from seeing your betta imbellis thread. They are expensive! Lampeye Killifish, Neocaridina Shrimp. I haven't fully thought this one through yet, its just something that floated through my mind. Ricefish. I've been wanting to do something with ricefish for a little while. I'm not sure if this is something I do in a aquarium, or if I do a indoor pond or something. Any other options not listed you would suggest? I'm not sure I wanna do another betta after hugo passed. Betta Imbellis being an exception cuz they are a little different. Heres a picture of the tank. Currently it houses one Nerite snail. The snail can find a new home in one of my other tanks if need be.

    Those are gourgoues @H.K.Luterman. I need to stop looking at this forum so often. I already wanna setup a tank for the betta imbellis @Fish Folk posted about, and now these.

    I agree with all the above suggestions. Crypts are one of my all time favorite plants and I've always gotten it to thrive. One thing to keep in mind is that crypts will most likely melt back at first, however will most certainley grow back. Bulb plants are fun because for a few weeks you may have no growth, and then once it starts growing, it grows fast. Its a very sattisfying plant. For bulb plants I like to partially burry them in gravel, i like to only cover the roots and leave the bulb exposed. Sometimes your bulb wont have any roots yet, in which case I sit it above the gravel/ sand and wait for roots to form. Once roots are formed I burry the roots in the substrate. One plant I would add to the list is anubias. Anubias is like java fern, they are both rhizome plants. And are both easy to care for. Anubias is one of my favorite, if not my favorite plant.

    I've never had an rhizome plants melt. Rhizome plants would include: Anubias, Buce, Java Fern, and much more. They've all done well in my experiance, and will thrive under low tech setups. Good Luck!

    Well as I said before in my last update: Well it appears he ate too many snails. Yesterday he was really fat, I honestly thought time would help and didnt think much of it. I came home to dead barry. He wasn't in my company for very long...3weeks. But for the 3 weeks I owned a pea puffer, I thoroughly enjoyed my experiance.

    Barrys tank was full of hair algae, however its looking to finally be under control. I did a big waterchange removing most of the water and had the light off for a few days. The other day I fed barry 5 snails. Only two are left. He's looking very round and is currently trying to recover from eating so many snails. Heres a cute baby snail pic I took: The apsitogramma borelli pair that I ordered I'm expecting to be shipped in about a week and a half (28th) simply because its going to be cold next week to (-20sCelsuis). I'm willing to wait if it means the fish arrive healthy and safely. I'm starting to put together the steps for the 20 long. I have the driftwood... the next step is the plants. I might be putting a plant order together later this week. My thinking is I will continue to breed my platys, and then move on to swordtails and perhaps some corydora. Some shrimp would be cool, but im also certain the swordtails would eat them.
