  1. I've only ordered dry goods from this company before like food. They are a company that specializes in shrimp and planted aquariums. However they dont have a website, only a facebook page. Their customer service always had speedy replys, longest I've waited for a reply was one hour. Shipping prices were some of the cheepest I've ever seen for livestock. I am very happy with this purchase. For those wanting a source, PM me!!!!
  2. My shrimp came yesterday! I ordered 10 orange Pumpkin Shrimp, however they added one in case of a DOA. There was no DOAs so 11 total! They have being doing great so far! I have a small container of shrimp king complete thatl ill be using. I'm thinking about using the LEGIT Fish Food bottom dweller foods for these guys as well. I drip acclimated them before putting them into the tank in a specimen container. The shipper gave me some subwasser tang for free for something for the shrimp to grab onto during shipping.
  3. Now that the Gouramis have been given back, the tank remains empty...again! After Hugos passing in Janurary the tank has gone through 2 sets of stocking. Barry the Pea Puffer, that died. And then of course the sparkiling gourami that didnt work out. The seller I've purchased the apistogramma pair and gouramis doesnt seem like a very high quality dealer. Both the apistogramma have suddenlly died only weeks after receiving them, and one gourami died. Along with the 6 cpds that were DOA. I ordered 10 Pumpkin Shrimp from a canadian shrimp breeder located in Calgary. They will be going in my fluval spec 5 gallon that housed my sparkiling gourami. Because it has a internal filter, I have to make it shrimp safe. To do this I got some mesh netting and ziptied it to the intake, this should work. I'm excited to try shrimp again! The shrimp will be shipped Monday, and should arrive Tuesday. I've been impressed with my passed drygood orders from this company, so I'm sure I'll be pleased with this shipment. Along with the shrimp I ordered some Frogbit.
  4. I have both a hygger light, and nicrew light. I am a way bigger fan of the hygger light then the nicrew. Here are the exact modles of each brand I have: Hygger Nicrew The Hygger light I found was a lot easier to program the built in timer. It took me 5 minutes, maybe not even. It is easily adjustable, and you can easily dim the light. The colors on this light really bring out the fish's color, and I'm really enjoying it. The Nicrew light I found was a lot harder to program. Infact to this day I have not programed my own timer, I just bought a wifi timer and plugged it in. The default 24/7 mode was on for wayy too long for my setup and caused green water. You can make your own 24/7 mode, however the manual doesnt do a great job of explaining how to do so, and there are limited videos on youtube. I'm not a big fan on the colors on this light either, compared to the Hygger. They are both relativley same price, the hygger might be a little cheaper.
  5. Great work! You chose some great plants, anubias being one of my favorites. Good Luck, I look forward to reading more updates! Your bettas gonna love it.
  6. It looks to be a Ivory Mystery Snail. I've had that exact species in the past and they are defentley very cute, mine seem to really like eating floating plants like Frogbit.
  7. With my newest tank I've purchased a light. Currently the tank is being run off a 3.0 nano. Because its a rimmed tank its been sitting on the lid to light the aquarium. However with this new light coming, the 3.0 nano will be moved to my fluval spec. It appears I have misplaced the mounting bracket that came with the light for rimless aquariums. Any idea if I could buy just the bracket? I've checked amazon, ebay, fluval parts website and various other sellers...no luck.
  8. Yes I've had these problems every time I rescape or reset my fluval spec 5. I would agree the blue lighting defentley plays a roll in it, but also the light is really freaking bright. Everytime the problem comes up, I turn the light off for a few days and during these few days gravel vac as much algae out as possible. Sometimes Ill even do a large 75% waterchange. Once the light is turned back on, I put paper on the lid to dim it. Of course there are pleanty other diy dimming light methods, however this is the one I choose. Heres a thread @Fish Folk posted with another cheap diy light dimmer method: I really dont like the fluval spec lights, I'm replacing mine with a Fluval 3.0 nano thats been lying around.
  9. This will all depend from betta to betta. Some tolerate tankmates, and some dont. To answer your question: In my experiance a betta being in his own tank with nobdy else wont effect if he can tank mates. I've actually read a number of articles where they suggest to put the betta in bythem seleves for the first few weeks to establish their territory. I'd say go for it! If you see it possibly not working out, have a back up plan for the amanoshrimp.
  10. An anubias nana maybe? I have one in my 5 gallon, its growing very nicely. I'm very jealous of that growth on the anubias. Anubias ROCK!!!
  11. Thats tough, im sorry for that. One thing to know is that random fish/ invertibrate death happeneds a lot. And its the worst kind of deaths because you dont know what happened. Theres WAYYY too many possibilities. Your paramaters seem fine. The rest of the shrimp I'm sure will thrive, all though keep an eye on them the next few days. Good Luck!
  12. About a week ago i purchased a apisgogramma Bocelli pair thru the mail, along with other fish. Well the female of that pair has died only after a week, I'm thinking she had something wrong with her prior to selling as she was never as active as the male. Anyways now I'm stuck with one male apisto. Obviously I can't breed them with one male. No stores locally sell apistogramma they've all said it's been tough getting them in stock since covid. I've checked with local aquarist and they don't seem to be selling any either. Any ideas as to what I can do? I'd rather not pay the big shipping fee again for one female, the site I got them from does seem to have bad quality fish as this wasn't the only death jn the shipment.
  13. I'm looking forward to seeing this journal! Breeding livebearers, especially guppies is extremley easy. Simply place a male and female in the same tank and within a few weeks youll have babies. I like to suggest a 2females for every male ratio. Make sure there is lots lf floating plants such as hornwort for babies to hide in. Once babies are a week or two old they will be too big for parents mouths and come out more.
  14. The 20 long has been setup, planted and now running for a few days. I used the same spongefilter from the 10 gallon, so fish were transfered over right away. Most of the plants are tissue culture so they are quite small. However I'm really looking forward to working with the Alternanthera reineckii green. The aquarium has a layer of soil and a thing layer of gravel to cap it. Its very dim, it currently has a 3.0 nano on it. However I'll be upgrading it for sure within the week or two. I'm thinking a Hygger Light. However I am very tempted to do another 3.0, but the cost is whats stopping me. It still has the platys breeding. When catching the fish out I counted 10 babies, 6 adudlts. My sparkiling gourami only are eating the baby brine shrimp I give them, which is too expesnive to feed every day. They almost never come out either. Truly are shy fish. I do beleive that they would benefit from having shoaling fish but I cant find any smaller rasboras or neon tetras at my lfs. All though I just got them, I'm thinking they will be happier in someone elses setup. If the CPDs werent a DOA perhaps we would be in a different boat. So I've put an ad out for them on kijjiji. Itll be tough to catch them out, perhaps I can use Live baby brine to lure them out of their hiding spot and scoop them up fast. Its a planted tank which is why I'm thinking itll be tough. Sylvester our Male Apistogramma Borelli Opal is coloring up nicely. I'm looking forward to little baby apistos swimming everywhere. I'm gonna start a brine shrimp batch this evening, should be ready for sunday morning.
  15. As long as tank parameters stay stable and nitrites and amonia stay at 0, you should be fine. The more the plants, the more the bioload you can take. I too am canadian so I understand the pain of dealing with an outbreak and not having any meds. I have had terrible luck when treating with salt as well. I live in Manitoba, here I'm able to find melafix, pimafix and API Super Ich Cure at big brand pet stores. I've seen them at petsmart, and petvalu. I've used the super ich cure to treat a ich outbreak and I was very happy with the results. In under a week everyone was fine.
  16. You can try vaccuming some out with your siphon. Also dim the light, and stop dosing ferts all together. once this algae problem has been resolved you can start dosing some more but at a limited amount. I like to go off by what the plants tell me. If it looks like they could use more nutreints ill dose, however if they look happy i wont dose at all.
  17. I dont think any problems would occur by feeding when the lights are out. I dont know if the fish would be finding the food cuz they could be sleeping so it could rot and cause amonia in the tank. My thought would be to feed them once a day when you get home. If you get home late thats fine, they can go several days maybe a couple weeks without food.
  18. I was told to bring anything that I wnated to see under a microscope for a science lab. I was originally thinking something that held lots of bacteria like a peice of sponge from a filter. However I thought that would be too big for wet mount slides. So I decided on aquarium sand. 40x Magnification: 100x Magnification:
  19. For later you can reuse the bags your lfs gives you. I have at least 10 unused bags that were used when the fish store gave me fish. Its great for recycling and reusing, especially when plastic is so bad for the enviourment. However you can buy some off amazon for sure!
  20. Thanks @BettaHomesAndGardens @Mmiller2001. I've looked into the hygger ones, its probably what I'm going to go with. @Streetwise I really enjoy the fluval 3.0 nanos. On amazon.ca they are only $120 (the regular 3.0s are double that). @BettaHomesAndGardens or anyone have you had experiance with this light: https://www.amazon.ca/Aquarium-Extendable-Dimmable-Spectrum-Freshwater/dp/B0896Y818P/ref=sr_1_5?crid=33G7FNDU4G3OD&keywords=hygger+aquarium+light&qid=1646699326&sprefix=hygger+aquarium+light%2Caps%2C97&sr=8-5 How would it compare to the one you reccemended me?
  21. I have a 20 gallon long that I am setting up. I am wondering what your recemnedations are for a light for this tank. I like fluval 3.0s but man they are expensive. Peferbly something with a built in custom timer, and water proof. Thanks!
  22. I set this aquarium up middle of Janurary. It took a little bit to take off, but it has now and I'm loving it.
  23. I've had monte carlo in the past without co2. It was very happy and green, and even pearled. However I had it for several months and no carpeting took place. I beleive this was because of the lack of co2. Dwarf Sagittaria is one of my all time favorite plants. I have it one of my low tech setups right now and its doing fine and carpeting a little.
  24. Today I was able to locate a 20 Gallon Long for only $50 from a local hobbyist. The plan is to upgrade the 10 gallon to this 20 long: The plants will be coming Tuesday which is when I'll be setting it up. I wasn't thinking I'd be getting one this early but I had to take ahold of this deal.
  25. I fed some Live Baby Brine today, I was pleased to see the gourami go after them. The plan is to get some CPDs or other dither fish shortly, however the seller only gave me store credit and I'm not willing to spend $50 on shipping for just a small group of cpds. Maybe I'll get other dithers at the fish store coming up. The light was turned off all of yesterday and then half of today. Thanks for the help you guys!
