  1. If the gravel has been working for 13 years I would not suspect it as the source of the problem. I would look to other recent changes. if you just really want to change out the gravel to try a new substrate then go for that.
  2. If you are going with Petsmart as your only source I would try neon tetra with beta and cories. They will have them. the tetras color with the beta will be complementary. Good luck, and welcome.
  3. Hiding from the fish. If you want to see them out relocate the fish if possible until you get a large colony going. It took me 3 tries with Neos to get some that lived in my water. Twice from the LFS no luck then ordered from a breeder online they are taking off now. Best of luck
  4. As to the question of quantity I always go for more then I think I want. That way you still should have the total number you really want after any losses.
  5. Hard to tell from the picture if you have floating plants. If you do not you could try a skimmer. I know that I don’t care for the buildup on the surface with open tanks.
  6. Looks like it is full of foam right behind the inlet. I would think that would be okay.
  7. I was wondering if he just cleans it like any other sponge filter?
  8. Check out Mark’s shrimp tanks. He has tons of great video on all the topics you want to know. when you get your shrimp make sure to take the time for a good drip acclimation. I started my blue dream tank late September and I have my 1st shrimplets now. Mark’s channel has helped me a bunch
  9. Looks good to me. If you like it go for it!
  10. Ideally but there is no way to do that with the filtosmart filters. You could try on the side of that sponge against the wall the separates the bio from the sponge. cut some of the sponge where the impeller goes and stick it in there….
  11. Drop the packet under the filter foam that goes under the impeller intake. There is room and it will help hold the sponge up tight
  12. Hooked on these little guys. Started these about a month ago. Hopefully will get an easy win with babies… looking good on that front have 3-5 Buried females now.
  13. Noticed I have a buried blue dream in the new shrimp tank after 3week in their new environment 🤗
  14. I’m starting a new shrimp system also. How I drip the new water in is with a cleaned out plastic gallon milk jug with a small hole poked into the bottom edge. I then just fill that in my water change bucket and let it sit o. The rim of the tank. Let gravity do the job and I don’t have to watch it. Mark’s shrimp suggested feeding food that is basically powder so it falls all over the tank. I haven’t had any losses in this newest set up. Good luck 👍
  15. Extra large canister filter or water conditioner tank that you can pump from for water changes 🤷‍♂️
  16. https://www.aquariumcoop.com/products/xtreme-krill-flakes
  17. Sounds like you have the tank already… if you also have all the other equipment why not set up the tank and run it with your tap water and test a few of the plants you want to keep. If things work well great go further if not adjust from there. I assume you are concerned about plants not live stock… sorry if you were asking about the ammonia my brain skipped that part
  18. Second on checking the impeller. Not sure on fx6 I don’t use that but make sure any cover over it is in place and the impeller is seated properly.
  19. Could the tank have been contaminated from new? Did you clean any of the equipment or decorations prior to putting into service? GL
  20. I really couldn’t say with any certainty what it is. Can you siphon it out easily when you do a water change? I don’t worry about stuff that shows up naturally in my tanks.
  21. The water change schedule that George Farmer recommends is not for “cycling” purposes but to limit algae and from excess nutrients that leach from the aqua soils that are used in aqua scapes. It might be helpful to watch some of the videos Cory has Such as this. Good luck it all take more time then we think it will or want it to.
  22. I would change 1 thing at a time to see how that affects the system. It’s not a sprint but a marathon. Take your time the plants and tanks look healthy. I get frustrated with my plant growth but enjoy watching the evolution
