  1. I keep him well feed with pleco blocks. He also eats left over food from the Oscar in there. The tank is 125 gallons.
  2. I am thinking about putting Java moss on the rock carrins I have in my tank. But I have a common pleco and don't want him to eat them. I have seen on some other forms that if you give them enough food they won't bother it. Thoughts?
  3. I have a 36-gal bow front tank that has been running freshwater for over a year. I moved all the fish I had in there to a larger tank and want to convert this one into a saltwater tank. I know I am going to have to cycle and change things. I am making the assumption that the beneficial bacteria is a different type since it will have to thrive in saltwater vs fresh. Does anyone have any tips or advice on this transition? I have heard I also need to get rid of the substrate that I have in there too, which I thought was odd but I am up for it. Any advice is welcome. I am doing FWLR tank so no reefs or anything too complicated right now.
  4. Any idea on how you set it up with a power head?
  5. I am not sure with plants being in there. I have not had experience with that. But With no fish being in there, yes just leave it as the cycle moves on it will switch to nitrate. You want to have 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite and everything else in nitrate.
  6. Hey there my fellow Common Pleco pals! My pleco is about 10 " now and loves his 125 gallon tank. I am wondering if when you guys vacuum your tanks if you have found a vac that can actually suck up the dense poop they give out or if you end up scooping it out. I have tried several and some will start to go up and then fall back down eventually. I don't really have the water pressure for one to do that way. Any ideas? Links are so welcome!

  9. I would think so, just like any animal they have to learn out to survive in their environment domesticated or not.
  10. My thought is that 80 seems to high to have platys at. Higher temps like that lower oxygen levels in the water so make sure you have good gas exchange in the water is going to be key. Depending on how the aggression has been with mating it is possible that they were just to stressed out from that. The only other thing I can think of is if you changed the water recently or adding anything to the water that would change your water.
  11. I saw this when I was online to. It may be only for Prime day which ends tonight it is also only for Prime members.
  12. Here is the link to the full article https://theaquariumadviser.com/gourami-bubble-nest/
  13. As Betta fish get older you can see some changes in pigments, where it is coming in around it's mouth in one photo I would think this is the case. The only other thing I can think of is black spot disease but I don't know if bettas can get that. Especially with you quarantining your fish and depending on what you treated them with. I would keep an eye on it but I feel like it is just aging.
  14. It is never fun when you have a sick fish and watching their health slowly decline. Api general cure doesn't kill your beneficial bacteria (see picture below) I think you are on the right track as far as what you have described. My guess would be some kind of swim bladder disorder. I attached a link with some ideas on what you can try. Swim bladder can be permanet and other times it can be correct. Either way the fish can still live a health life with some extra care. Best of luck to your little guy. https://www.petmd.com/fish/conditions/respiratory/swim-bladder-disorders-fish
  15. Here is my two cents on this and it's probably worth less then that. I think it may be your sponge filter. I have read online before that vibrating equipment can make it hard for this family of fish to breed. I wonder if it is something to do with the sponge filter somehow stressing him out. depending on the airflow it may also be causing to much turbulence for the bubbles to stay formed. The other thought is since the bubbles are formed from a mucus maybe some kind of issue with that?.
  16. I have not had any personal experience with Rapashy powder so I can not answer that question. I personally like to hatch baby brine shrimp and my whiteclouds love them and go crazy for them.
  17. I just got a reverse osmosis & Deionized system it is a 6 stage system that does 100 to 150 gpd depending on water pressure. I am curious how everyone that has these systems uses them in their aquariums. Do you mix it with normal tap water or do 100% RODI water. I don't like that it has so much waste water which really sucks so has anyone still used that for the tank or anything? Also I have really hard water living in the Rocky Mountain area. My Ph from the tap is somewhere between 8.4-8 and when I have been mixing different ratios in my api test tube (1/4 tap,3/4 rodi, 1/2 tap 1/2 rodi, 1/2 tap, 2/3 ro) I see my ph go down to maybe 7.4 not really knowing much about water It doesn't feel like a big drop. When I do 100% rodi water it is either 6.0 or lower. Anyone seen or know of any huge benefits with how this effects freshwater tanks in the long run? Thanks for helping me keep my fishbros happy! Here is a link to the RODI system I have https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00U1TPBZY?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details
  18. It depends on where you get them high end breeders will cost more as well as color strains. All of mine have been less then $3 a fish from big chain stores. Just make sure to quarantine them.
  19. Once you get into fish keeping like this though it is a slippery slope to MTS. (Multiple tank syndrome)
  20. It's actually pretty simple. Just don't get females. I have have lots of male only guppies I got from big chain pet stores and only recently just got some females to breed. All the pet stores I have been to have them labeled as male or female guppies. Usually male guppies are more colorful to. You could try them out in your six gallon if you wanted to I personally would not do more then 2 maybe 3 in a six gallon.
  21. In my opinion one of my favorite beginner fish are Guppies. Depending on the genetic strain and what the breeder did they can be pretty hardy fish. They are very active and fluttering all over the tank and come in so many different colors. Mine like to hang out with each other zooming around the tank and sometimes they will do their own thing. You can keep them in a wide range of plants and water parameters. Especially where you have had a Betta you can get some with a big flowy tail if you wanted to (one of my favorites). They are also pretty commonly found and you could even have you child pick out a few they like to include them in the hobby. I personally have not had any experience with silvertip tetras so I don't have any input on that, but they are beautiful fish. I love your betta tank looks great! Sorry to hear you lost for fish that way! Here is a video from Cory with Aquarium co-op, he LOVES guppies as well. There is a lot of info out there for them. Happy fish hunting!
  22. How do you start the syphon with airline tubing? I was thinking a syringe my work.
  23. I used a sand once with high silica in it and ended up with a lot of diatoms in the tank. I have never tried the glass sand before but I have used black diamond blasting media in my 125 with no problem
  24. That must hard when a fish gets sick or anything like that. Hopefully vet care is cheaper there then it is here in the U.S. Here is an article I found on the Co op blog that has some natural ways to get rid of BGA https://www.aquariumcoop.com/blogs/aquarium/blue-green-algae
  25. I just had my tiger barbs lay eggs and for some reason forgot that I would have still do water changes on that tank. I have seen videos on where people would talk a filter bag and put over the gravel vac or use air tubing. I am just wondering if anyone else has ideas or input on how they change the water without hurting fry?
